The Sui Dynasty - A Violent Reunification
There seems to be a lot of repetition in Chinese history. The short-lived Qin Dynasty violently united the empire and led to the Han—China's first Golden Age.
And in a similar way the Sui Dynasty, which lasted just 36 years, re-united China after almost 400 years of division, setting the stage for the Tang—the greatest of China's dynasties.
The Sui Dynasty was established in 581 AD. China had been divided since the end of the Han Dynasty in around 220 AD. After passing through the battles of the Three Kingdoms Period and the Northern and Southern Dynasties, the rulers of the Northern Wei Dynasty saw their chance to conquer "all under heaven," the Chinese term for the area considered as China at the time.
Due to multiple palace coups, the rulers of Wei ended up with the surname Sui. They conquered Sichuan in 533 AD, the North East in 577, and then set their sights on the south. The Southern campaign involved a massive naval assault with thousands of ships sailing up the Yangtze River.
In 589 AD, the campaign was completed and Emperor Wen, or the "cultured" emperor, founded the Sui Dynasty. One of Emperor Wen's first actions as ruler of the Sui was to move the nobles from the defeated capital of the Southern Chen Dynasty to the new Sui capital at Chang'an. Keeping the nobles close by eliminated them as a separatist threat and allowed their cultural traditions to be incorporated into the new dynasty.
During the period of disunity, Buddhism spread across China—proving to be the force that played a role in uniting the empire once again. Emperor Wen and his empress converted to Buddhism. Wen tried to use this conversion to legitimize his military conquest, presenting himself as a monarch who uses military force to defend the Buddhist faith.
But Emperor Wen and his successor tried to do too much, too soon. Their military campaigns were enormous. Over 1 million men were called up for compulsory military service in a war against Korea in 612 AD, and this was one war among many. This all took its toll on the populace and after less than four decades of Sui rule, a rebellion started.
In 618 AD, Li Yuan, who was actually a cousin of the second Sui emperor, overthrew the Sui. Li reigned as Emperor Gaozong, and he and his son Taizong, started the Great Tang Dynasty. The Tang lasted until 907 AD—and has come to be regarded as the highest point of Chinese civilization.

The Tang Dynasty is considered the pinnacle of Chinese civilization, yet how did it start? It was the brief and little known Sui Dynasty that helped to unify China.

Discovering China - Confucius
Today, we are going to be starting off this first episode talking about Confucius. And if you are talking about notable figures in Chinese history, Confucius is a great place to start—because he really is the philosopher who defined Chinese society for the past two thousand years.
Confucius is thought to have lived from 551 to 479 BC, during the so-called 'Spring and Autumn Period,' when China's Zhou Dynasty was slowly splitting up. This era later turned into the 'Warring States Period,' before China was unified again in around 200 BC.
Confucius was born in the state of Lu. This is the modern day Shandong province. Now, at the time when Confucius was born, China was kind of like Medieval Europe. Different states were competing with each other for power.
Confucius saw morality deteriorating and the aristocracy turning their back on the traditions of the Zhou Dynasty that Confucius viewed as a kind of Golden Age. Confucius felt he had a mission to return China to its former glory, to return to the 'Way' or Dao.
Today, the Dao refers to China's traditional culture of self-cultivation and emphasis on the way of virtue. Confucius felt people in his age had lost true respect for the established rituals and norms of society. They merely carried out the formalities—without really understanding the true essence. To use the words of the time, "The world lacked the Dao." Thus Confucius started his mission of educating the populace.
Confucius taught his disciples to become Gentlemen...instructing them in the six arts: Rites, music, archery, charioteering, calligraphy, and mathematics.
Confucius stressed several philosophical concepts that would serve to maintain China's social structure for the next two millennia. These include: Benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and faithfulness. As well as loyalty and filial piety, the respectful relationship between subordinates and their superiors, such as sons and their fathers, or subjects and their rulers.
Confucius was never employed in any significant government post during his lifetime. But during the Han Dynasty, almost 300 years after his death, Confucianism was adopted as China's state philosophy.
Confucianism became known as one of China's three belief systems—along with Buddhism and Daoism.
But, Confucianism is very much a philosophy for those living in society—whereas Buddhism and Daoism stress withdrawing from the world to seek spiritual enlightenment.
The Confucian belief that rulers needed to be virtuous led to the establishment of the imperial examination system. These examinations started in the Sui Dynasty, which ran from 589 to 618 AD.
The examinations saw officials selected based on their academic achievements rather than through a hereditary system, as was common in other parts of the world at the time. Thus scholars noted that for many centuries, China had the most advanced political system in the world.
Gradually, these examinations became more structured through history. They saw prospective officials tested on their understanding and ability to memorize Confucian texts. Their answers during the exams had to demonstrate the well-cultivated thinking of a Confucian gentleman.
The exam system ended a few years before the fall of imperial China in 1911. And after the Communist takeover in 1949, Confucianism was ruthlessly attacked—especially during the Cultural Revolution and campaign to smash the four Olds: Old Customs, Old Culture, Old Habits, and Old Ideas.
Since Confucianism had been at the very core of Chinese society for two thousand years, the Communist regime's attack against Confucianism can be seen as an attack on the very essence of Chinese culture.
But Confucianism has survived, particularly due to the preservation of the customs in Taiwan and other countries.
Today, when speaking of traditional Chinese culture, Confucius can be seen as one of the most influential figures from ancient times till the present day. His teachings are at the very heart of China's traditional culture of self-cultivation and emphasis on virtue.

1972 MGB Roadster...
1972 MG B...

Suzhou
This movie is a tour of sites around Suzhou and includes the Lingering Garden, the Grand Canal, Hanshan Temple and Tiger Hill.
The World Heritage listed Lingering Garden in Suzhou was constructed in 1595 during the Ming Dynasty and has since undergone many renovations and expansions. The garden is partitioned with chambers, halls and corridors while interlinked courtyards combine artificial hills, water surfaces, flowers and trees to provide themed sections in classic Chinese garden style.
The Grand Canal, which connects Beijing with Hangzhou, is the longest canal system in the world. Its various sections, some dating back to the 5th Century BC, were joined together during the Sui Dynasty (581-618 AD). Passing through Suzhou is the southernmost section of the canal.
Hanshan Temple is a Buddhist temple and monastery located near Suzhou. Originally founded in the Liang Dynasty (502-577 AD), the temple underwent many renovations during later dynasties. A poem written in the Tang Dynasty about the temple's bell brought fame which continues today in an annual New Year bell ringing ceremony.
Tiger Hill, so named because it was said to look like a crouching tiger, is an historical scenic site near Suzhou. Features of the hill are the Tiger Hill Pagoda (built in 959-961 AD) and the legendary Sword Pool.
I made the 1080/60p movie from stills taken with my Panasonic SD800 camcorder and edited with iMovie at 60fps on an iMac as described on my webpage at www.ianperegian.com.
