The Thomas Group - Autumn (Dunhill Records 45-D-4030 - 1966)
Anthony (Tony) C. Thomas is the youngest of three children of the comic, Danny Thomas and his wife Rose Marie. Gregory Maxwell Gilford is the son of actress Anne Gwynne. The Thomas Group met, according to the liner notes of the single "I've Got No More To Say", at Beverly Hills High School. During their senior year, they were all enthusiastic basketball players, and thus got to know each other on the school's court. Tony, Greg, Marty and David were all native Californians, while Robert originated from Kentucky. David had studied the trumpet prior to joining the group. Marty apparently had "a wealth of professional experience". Dunhill Records discovered them, and signed them to Trousdale Music as writers with a 5-year contract. PF Sloan and Steve Barri were apparently impressed with their "happy sound and fresh look". They assembled their standard team of studio musicians to work with the band, namely PF Sloan on guitars, Joe Osborne (bass), Larry Knechtel (keyboards), and Hal Blaine (drums). The following table provides a brief summary of some of the other people behind the group. They were allegedly acclaimed as "the fastest rising rock'n' roll group" of 1966. An article in 'KRLA Beat' in late 1966 featured an article about them. Even before their third single had been issued, however, they found themselves back in various colleges in Southern California, beginning their Freshman year, in September 1966. Steve Barri said the following about them: "At that time, again we ...

Steppenwolf - Born To Be Wild - 45 RPM SUPER HOT POWERFUL MONO MIX!!! SHORT Version
Original ABC Dunhill Records #4138 Debut 7/13/1968 Peaked at # 2 for 3 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart This is the super hot powerful mono mix that just blows away the weak wimpy sounding common stereo mix with the Hammond Organ on only one channel. ABC Dunhill records destroyed both the original multitrack master tapes and the mono mixes in the early 70's to save space. This left only the stereo mix remaining. Therefore, the only way to really hear this superior mix is from the original mono 45 RPM vinyl record. This is also the edited short version that was originally played on the radio when this was a hit record. The longer stereo version commonly heard today is from the LP.

1961 Packard Bell stereo console Hi Fi / Three Dog Night, Easy to Be Hard
Three Dog Night's 1969 ultra classic "Easy to Be Hard", being played on my 1961 classic Packard Bell stereo console from the album Suitable for Framing. This was the second album released by Three Dog Night in June of 1969 from the Dunhill record label. This is a 43 year old record being played on a 51 year old tubed stereo. A perfect match which results in great sounding music. Wouldn't you agree? Phsycedelic bliss! I sure do miss those days of going to the local record store and flipping through the old vinyl. What fun those days were! This video is not intended for profit or copyright infringement. Artist: Three Dog Night, Record Label: Dunhill Records

The Grass Roots - Where Were You When I Needed You - 45 RPM - Original Mono Mix
Original Dunhill records #4029 Debut 6/18/1966 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Peaked at #28. Written by PF Sloan & Steve Barri Produced by PF Sloan & Steve Barri This is the original mono mix and original "hit version". The Grass Roots first charted record. Featuring Willie Fulton on lead vocals (pre-Rob Grill) Most versions of this song in circulation are of the re-recorded 3rd version (recorded in 1967) with Rob Grill on lead vocals. Only this ORIGINAL commercially released 45 RPM record contains this original version (actually 2nd version) with Willie Fulton on lead vocals ! this is the version of the record that is playing, and is the version that made it onto the charts in 1966. Please note that the first version of this record (demo record only) that was released to only radio stations in the San Francisco Bay area had PF Sloan on lead vocals. The first version release did not chart and was not commercially released. The idea for the Grass Roots was originally conceived by songwriters Steve Barri and PF Sloan. The duo was asked by Lou Adler, head of Dunhill Records, to gather songs for the record label in early 1965. They wrote "Where Were You When I Needed You" and recorded it as a demo. When the record started to gain interest, they began a search for a band to take the the name of The Grass Roots. After an audition at the Whisky-A-Go-Go in San Francisco, a group named the Bedouins were selected to become The Grass Roots. This is the original mono mix as heard ...

The Grass Roots - Midnight Confessions
The name "Grass Roots" (originally spelled as one word "Grassroots") originated in mid-1965 as the name of a band project by the Los Angeles, California songwriter and producer duo of PF Sloan and Steve Barri. Sloan and Barri had written several songs in an attempt by their record company, Dunhill Records (owned by Lou Adler), to cash in on the budding folk rock movement. One of these songs was "Where Were You When I Needed You," which was recorded by Sloan and Barri and a now forgotten line-up of studio musicians. Sloan provided the lead vocals and played guitar. The song was released under "The Grass Roots" name and sent, as a demo, to several radio stations of the San Francisco Bay area. The group's third — and by far most successful — incarnation was finally found in a Los Angeles band called The 13th Floor (not to be confused with the 13th Floor Elevators). This band consisted of Creed Bratton (vocals, guitar), Rick Coonce (drums, percussion), Warren Entner (vocals, guitar, keyboards), and Kenny Fukomoto (bass) and had formed only a year earlier. Entner, who had been attending film school at UCLA alongside future Doors members Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek, was drifting through Europe in the summer of 1965 singing and playing on street corners, when he met fellow busker and American Creed Bratton in Israel, where an Israeli businessman expressed interest in managing and promoting them. But the duo moved on and ended up back in LA by 1966, where they formed the 13th ...

Richard Harris - MacArthur Park - 45 RPM Original Mono Mix
Original ABC Dunhill Records #4134 Debut 5/11/1968 Peaked at #2 for ONE week on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart The following information is courtesy of the official Musicradio WABC website: www.musicradio77.com The story behind Richard Harris' "MacArthur Park". In his book "Rocking America", legendary WABC Program Director Rick Sklar tells the story of how WABC was responsible for making this record into a huge hit. This is a classic example of the popularity and power of WABC in those days. Rick wrote: Our first April WABC weekly music meeting began like many others. Disc jockeys Ron Lundy and Dan Ingram, a production assistant, our music librarian, my secretary, and I gathered in my office. On this particular day we had an ABC dub under consideration. I glanced at the handwritten label. The reason why ABC had been afraid to start pressing the discs in quantity was obvious. At a time when most records ran two and a half or three minutes, this daring effort ran seven minutes. I put "MacArthur Park" on the turntable, cued it up, and hit the start button. We sat back and listened. This record was not only long, it was different. The lyrics were full of poetic imagery. The composition was broken into contrasting movements like a miniature symphony. A second melody line was introduced for a lengthy instrumental portion of the record. As it played, a silence fell over the meeting. Because the door was open, secretaries passing by stopped, slipped into the room, and sat down on ...

PF Sloan interviewed on Who's Who Speaks with Mike Ryan
PF Sloan was a driving force behind the Dunhill Records pop factory. He was a prolific songwriter in the '60s working with The Turtles, Johnny Rivers etc. His song "Eve of Destruction" was one of the first protest anthems to crack the pop charts.

3's a Crowd - Wasn't It You
3's a Crowd were a late 60's Canadian folk-pop group who were signed to Dunhill Records. This Carole King/Gerry Goffin track is a highlight from their only LP, "Christopher's Movie Matinee". Produced by Cass Elliot and Steve Barri. Cass can be heard singing backup vocals on this track. "Wasn't It You" was also recorded by Petula Clark, The Action, and Spanky & Our Gang but unfortunately it remains an obscure King/Goffin track.
