Swanage, Dorset, England (Thursday 21st June 2012)
Swanage is a coastal town and civil parish in the south east of Dorset, England. It is situated at the eastern end of the Isle of Purbeck, approximately 10 km south of Poole and 40 km east of Dorchester. The parish has a population of 10124 (2001). Nearby are Ballard Down and Old Harry Rocks, with Studland Bay and Poole Harbour to the north. Within the parish are Durlston Bay and Durlston Country Park to the south of the town. The parish also includes the areas of Herston, just to the west of the town, and Durlston, just to the south. The town, originally a small port and fishing village flourished in the Victorian era, when it first became a significant quarrying port and later a seaside resort for the rich of the day. Today the town remains a popular tourist resort, this being the town's primary industry, with many thousands of visitors coming to the town during the peak summer season, drawn by the bay's sandy beaches and other attractions. During its history the bay was listed variously as Swanawic, Swanwich, Sandwich, and only in more recent history as Swanage. The town is located at the eastern end of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site.

Sea Kayaking around Swanage - Dorset.
Set off for St Albans Head, from Swanage, got halfway, and Matt phoned to say he'd be in Swanage within the hour, rudely interrupting my plans.........I travelled down on Monday, and Matt arranged to be down Tuesday.I didn't think I'd see him until the evening,so went about My day as normal. The weather was brilliant, really hot, light winds,as good as being abroad, better in fact.So set off, explored the bay,and the Pier, and the Old Pier, then rounded Peveril Point. This is a quite notorious place, and is responsible for many call outs for the lifeboat. So respect has been earned,on this day it was calm, but wind against tide here, and it gets hairy,as do ALL places like this were tidal streams occur.Durlston Head is another, again,on this day it was benign, save for some awkward clapotis.Out beyond Anvil Point, and it was calmer still. From here down to St Albans,or St Aldhelms Head, the coast seems quite uniform in height, and appearance, and landing isn't possible until Dancing Ledge,I think, even then,it is a solid rock landing, and I was apprehensive about getting there, needing a "Jimmy Riddle" or worse, and not being able to land........So Matt saved the day, arriving early, and making the decision for me! Back to Swanage, and met up on Monkey Beach, and then opted for a trip to Studland, taking in Old Harry Rocks, for the second time for Me.Another great trip, exploring Old Harry, and all it's caves, arches, nooks and crannies, then lunch on Studland Beach, watching the Military practising, with their ...

Wareham to Swanage Drivers Eye View
A driver's Eye View of the Swanage Branch early in 2009. The Swanage Railway are connected to the national network at Motala, although the track needs much upgrading before regular passenger services recommence. In this video you will see the various stages that have to currently be gone through to come of the National Network at Worgret Jct before proceeding down the stub to Motala, the official boundary, then onto Norden where I was on crossing duty protecting the ungated crossing. After getting onto the Swanage Railway proper the journey through to Swanage is straight forward with two 'single line tablet' exchanges at Corfe Castle (where we pass the Swanage Railway class 117 unit) and Harmans Cross before arriving at Swanage where we see M7 30053 waiting to depart with a service train for Norden. With thanks to everyone involved for the filming.

Cathedrals Express to Swanage with 4464 Bittern 19-04-12
Thursday 19th April looked like being another of "those" days. With less than 24 hours until departure, the motive power of the Banbury to Swanage Cathedrals Express, 46201 Princess Elizabeth, had been declared a failure, leading to speculation that the train might run with diesel haulage. In the event, 4464 Bittern was drafted in as a last minute substitute. With steam now assured, we made an early start (not early enough) and headed for Tackley, the first pick-up stop after Banbury. Right from the start it was clear that, with the heavy rush-hour traffic, we weren't going to make it and so we diverted, first to Didcot, then to Radley, then to Culham. Not surprisingly, with all this toing and froing (and some bad navigation in Abingdon) we managed to miss the train completely. Already two shots down, we moved on to a spot near St Mary Bourne. In order to maximize our output, I stayed here with the "A" camera while the "second unit" took our new camera and went off to Deane. This worked (up to a point), with the video opening on a bridge near Deane and then cutting to the viaduct near St Mary Bourne. The down side was the travel time back from Deane to pick me up because it meant that we were late arriving at Redbridge, by which time Bittern had already passed through on the way to the Up Goods Loop at Southampton. In the loop, the A4 ran round its train. Tender-first running from here to Swanage meant that the loco would be facing forwards for the journey home without ...

Dorset Coast Express Railtour & Swanage Railway
On Saturday 2nd May 2009, unrebuilt Battle of Britain Bulleid 4-6-2 Pacific No. 34067 "Tangmere" worked Past Time Rail's 'The Dorset Coast Express' Railtour from London Victoria to Swanage, the first steam hauled direct train from London to Swanage in over 40 years! The Spam Can departed Victoria at 08:05 and was routed via Stewarts Lane (where it passed fellow Bulleid Pacific No. 35028 "Clan Line"!), Clapham Junction, Richmond, Chertsey and Woking to reach Winchfield, where it took on water. After the water stop, which gave those on board to stretch their legs and/or take photos, Tangmere departed for Swanage, travelling via Basingstoke, Southamtpon and Wareham. Shortly after departing from Wareham, 34067 diverged down the Swanage Branch, towards Furzebrook, at Worgret Junction. The line between Worgret Jn and Furzebrook was used by LPG trains until a couple of years ago, and since the end of these trains, the section of line has remained little used. After passing Furzebrook, Tangmere reached Norden, Corfe Castle (where she passed fellow Spam Can 34070 "Manston"!) and finally, Swanage. A little while after arriving, 37706 departed Swanage with the Railtour stock and Tangmere along with her support coach, stabled in a siding. Swanage Railway services were worked by 34070 Manston and a 4-car DMU. Visiting BR Blue 33/1 No. 33103 "Swordfish" worked the Railtour ECS into Swanage, with 37706 on the other end ready for the return to London. The route back to London from ...
