Crusader Kings II: The Republic Gameplay Impressions
I'm playing Crusader Kings II: The Republic, an expansion for the role-playing grand strategy game by Paradox Interactive. This time around, you get to control one of the merchant republics spawned during the time period (Venice, Genoa, Pisa, the Hanseatic League). The rules are slightly different: your main concern is placing and defending trade posts, which can be constructed in any coastal province (for a higher cost the further away you are from your home province). Much like traditional holdings, these can be upgraded to pull in more trade or tax income, and linking them together provides a bonus. Trade posts owned by your league but not by your family can be captured through plots, and trade posts owned by other leagues can be destroyed by winning an embargo war: basically, you bribe a large country to fight the war on your behalf (since merchant republics have mediocre army levies), if you have significantly good relations. Succession in the merchant republic is elective, and you can invest money to improve your chances. Alliances can still be made through marriage, but a high cash price must be paid to align with any female noble. At a $10 price point, The Republic offers enough unique changes, and a different focus, from the base Crusader Kings II formula to make the expansion a good choice for fans of the game.

Ravello Italy Amalfi Coast
Ravello was founded in the 5th century as a shelter place against the barbarian invasions which marked the end of the Western Roman Empire. In the 9th century Ravello was an important town of the maritime republic of Amalfi, a producer of wool from its surrounding country that was dyed in the town and an important trading power in the Mediterranean between 839 and around 1200. In 1086 it was made the seat of a bishopric by will of the Norman count Roger Borsa, as a counterweight to powerful Amalfi. In the 12th century it had some 25000 inhabitants, and retains a disproportionate number of palazzi of the mercantile nobility, the Rufolo, d'Aflitto, Confalone and Della Marra. In 1137, after a first failed attack two years before, it was destroyed by the Republic of Pisa. After this event, it started a demographic and economical decline, and much of its population moved to Naples and its surroundings.

We've picked Genoa and we have a long way to go. This video we learn to appreciate the challenges of being small and playing on a higher difficulty. MARSEILLE France
Marseille is the oldest city in France and its largest commercial harbor in the Mediterranean. It is believed that in 600 BC, travelers from the Greek town of Phokis founded the autonomous town of 'Massalia'. In the Middle Ages, the city's main harbor was used by the crusaders to embark on their journey to Jerusalem and it rivaled those of the maritime republics of Genoa, Pisa and Venice. One of Marseille's main landmarks rises high above the harbor, the seafarers' church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde. It towers above the city like a fortress and on its bell tower is a gilded ten metre high figure of the Virgin Mary. Several hundred yachts of all sizes crowd into the old harbor where there is often little room for the comings and goings of modern day sailors. It is difficult to imagine that once near-starving slaves were forced to use their last ounce of strength to row their master's galleys into the harbor. Modern harbor complexes require a great deal of space as is well demonstrated by Marseille's new harbor and after Rotterdam, it is the second largest in Europe. Two mighty fortresses overlook the harbor, the northern Fort Saint-Jean is the oldest and was used by the Order of the Knights of Malta, the Fort Saint-Nicolas stands guard over the southern side of the narrow harbor entrance and was built in the 17th century. The tiny island of Chateau d'If was made famous due to a novel by Alexander Dumas, The Count of Monte Christo. A small museum features many items related ...

Veneto Region - Italy
Veneto (pronounced [ˈvɛːneto], Latin Venetia, Venetian Vèneto), is one of the 20 regions of Italy. Its population is about 4.8 million. Having been for a long period in history a land of mass emigration, Veneto is today one of the greatest immigrant-receiving regions in the country, with 454453 foreigners (9.30% of the regional population) in 2008, the most recent of which are the Romanians and the Moroccans.[2] The Veneto had been for a millennium an independent state, known as the Venetian Republic, and the region was annexed to Italy in 1866 after brief Austrian and French rule. Its capital was, and still is Venice, which for a long period ruled one of the vastest and richest maritime republics and trade empires in the world. Due to this recent annexation to the rest of Italy, a significant number of Venetians consider themselves to have a unique identity which they refuse to subsume within the notion of "Italian", and the regional government has gone so far as to officially define its inhabitants as "a people".[3] This opened the way to a notable nationalist movement and to the election of a "Venetian nationalist", Luca Zaia (Liga Veneta--Lega Nord), as president of the Region. Once the heartland of the Venetian Republic, Veneto is today among the wealthiest, most developed and industrialised regions of Italy. Having one of the country's richest historical, natural, artistic, cultural, musical and culinary heritages, it is also the most visited region of Italy, with ...

Trani
The city of Turenum appears for the first time in the Tabula Peutingeriana, a 13th century copy of an ancient Roman itinerary. The name, also spelled Tirenum, was that of the Greek hero Diomedes. The city was later occupied by the Lombards and the Byzantines. First certain news of an urban settlement in Trani, however, trace back only to the 9th century. The most flourishing age of Trani was the 11th century, when it became an episcopal see in place of Canosa, destroyed by the Saracens. Its port, well placed for the Crusades, then developed greatly, becoming the most important on the Adriatic Sea. In the year 1063 Trani issued the Ordinamenta et consuetudo maris, which is "the oldest surviving maritime law code of the Latin West".[1] In that period many great families from the main Italian Maritime Republics (Amalfi, Pisa, Ragusa and Venice) established themselves in Trani. Trani, in turn, maintained a consul in Venice from 12th century. The presence of other consulates in many northern Europe centres, even in England and Netherlands, shows Trani's trading and political importance in the Middle Ages. Emperor Frederick II built a massive castle in Trani. Under his rule, in the early 13th century, the city reached its highest point of wealth and prosperity.

Iran flexes maritime muscles over sanctions
www.euronews.net Iran's testing of long range missiles and a veiled threat to close access to the Persian Gulf have ratcheted up tensions with the West. The Islamic Republic has completed 10 days of naval exercises aimed at showcasing its military capabilities. Iranian Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said: "It means that the security of Hormuz Strait is in our hands and the Strait is under our control, that is crystal clear. But we have always maintained that the goal of the drills is to provide the region with stable security."

Slaughter Across The Water
Nominated for a 2010 Visions Award
Read the blog http://wp.me/po1la-dU
The Short:
Profiles the annual tug of war between the city of Annapolis and "breakaway micro nation" Maritime Republic of Eastport.
The Long:
In 1997 the Spa Creek bridge in Annapolis, MD was shut down for repairs. This was the main connection to the city for the neighborhood of Eastport. Residents worried that this would negatively effect their local economy and businesses. In response, a group formed to found the 'Maritime Republic of Eastport'. They 'officially' seceded from Annapolis and the U.S and can be found in the book of micro nations.
In 1998 the MRE held a tug of war across Spa Creek to pit Eastport versus Annapolis. This is purportedly the largest tug of war across a body of water in the world, although the Guinness Book of World Records doesn't recognize tug of wars due to their danger.
Slaughter Across The Water picks up during the 12th annual tug of war in 2009. Founding members, residents, and visitors tell the people's history of the MRE and the tug. Includes "embedded" coverage of 'patriotic' events.

The Maritime Republic of Eastport
Eastport is separated from Annapolis, MD by Spa Creek. The Eastport peninsula is bordered by Spa and Back Creeks as they flow into the mouth of the Severn River as it empties into the Chesapeake Bay. Eastport has a history of maritime industry, which continues today. Working boats of yesteryear however, have been replaced by the pleasure boating industry.
