That fountain before Atapuerca
Burgos (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈburɣos], UK /ˈbʊərɡɒs/, US /ˈbʊərɡoʊs/) is a city in northern Spain, historic capital of Castile. It is situated on the River Arlanzón in northern Spain, just to the west of Logroño and southwest of Bilbao, at the edge of the central plateau. It has about 180000 inhabitants in the proper city and another 20000 in its suburbs. It is the capital of the province of Burgos, in the autonomous community of Castile and León. The Burgos Laws or Leyes de Burgos first governing the behaviour of Spaniards towards natives of the Americas were promulgated there in 1512. It has many historic landmarks, set apart specially by the Cathedral of Burgos (named World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1984), Las Huelgas Reales Monastery and the Cartuja of Miraflores. It preserves a large number of churches, palaces and other building from the medieval age. The city is surrounded by the Fuentes Blancas and the Paseo de la Isla parks. The city forms the principal crossroad of northern Spain along the Camino de Santiago, which runs parallel to the River Arlanzón. It has a developed transportation system, forming the main communication node in northern Spain. The Museum of Human Evolution was opened in 2010, unique in its kind across the world and projected to become one of the top 10 visited museums in Spain. The museum features the first Europeans, which lived in this area 800000 years ago.

Hank C. Burnette - "Rockabilly Rebel"
Yet another of yours truly's infamous suicide's on a rather pleasant Rockabilly outburst, the UK band Matchbox's '79 hit, 'Rockabilly Rebel', done in a somewhat hairraising instru version and recorded shortly after the original saw the light of day. If you think you can spot a synth going berserk in there somewhere you're probably right, as there's a lot of noise going on here. Still, not to step on any hardcore Rockabilly fan's toes, there's still that trusty old Country Gent taking the lead throughout! The whole stew is also shamelessly taken at an almost lunatic speed that there should be certain laws against, but who cares as long as you get away with it, LOOL!! Trivia time...Matchbox was originally a band formed back in 1971 with a line-up that included both Steve Bloomfield on lead guitar/vocals and Fred Poke on bass, plus Rusty Lupton on piano/rhythm guitar/vocals and 'Wild' Bob Burgos on drums. Graham Fenton joined them from the Hellraisers in 1977 as the lead vocalist, but it was their amalgamation a little later with Jimmy Redhead (who replaced Bob Burgos on drums) and Gordon Scott (who replaced Rusty Lupton on rhythm guitar) from the Cruisers that formed the band as we know them today. In 1975 they released their first single on the small UK Dawn label, followed by another single on the Rockhouse label in Holland the following year and yet another single on the small UK Raw label in 1978. Their big breakthrough came soon after when they were selected to back Bo ...

School of fish at the sanctuary.
You can see this kind of situation now here at San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, Philippines. A reserved area and protected by law and watched 24/7 by the Bantay Dagat team headed by my brother-in-law Edward P. Burgos. Efforts have been made to rehabilitate fish population in the area. A newly develop fish management has been implemented with laws on this area. Illegal fishing is a big No No like "Tuble" and "Dynamite" fishing are one of the challenges in the area. We are hoping that a movement from the community could also help protect this area. This sanctuary is a model for all other area. Keep up the good work guys we are supporting you all the way.

El Cid 1961 - Battle of Valencia (against Ben Yussuf)
Movie producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein have honored their late mother by establishing a new video company in her name. The Miriam Collection, released through the Genius Products video label, will issue vintage films on DVD in special collector's editons. It wouldn't be accurate to call each of the forthcoming releases a classic, but it would be safe to say that movie fans will be over the moon about the availability of some long-desired gems that had never been released on DVD previously. The most exciting news for Cinema Retro readers is the fact that the Weinsteins have the rights to the films of producer Samuel L. Bronstron and their initial release, the 1961 epic El Cid is first rate in every conceivable way. Bronston was a man who didn't know how to think small - his appetites were big and so was his love for the film industry. He shot epic movies on relatively economical budgets by establishing a studio in Spain. By doing so, he took advantage of the dictator Franco's desire to improve his nation's discredited image by luring heavyweight Hollywood producers to do business in Spain. Bronston found not only favorable financial and climate conditions there, but Franco also gave him a literal army of unpaid extras through use of, well, the Spanish army.Bronston planned to finanace his next film with the profits from the previous one. The idea worked well initially. El Cid, which tells the story of Spain's greatest hero - Rodrigo de Bivar, who united disparate ...

Toledo, Spain
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Founded 7th century
Toledo (Latin: Toletum) is a municipality located in central Spain, 70 km south of Madrid. It is the capital of the province of Toledo and of the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 for its extensive cultural and monumental heritage as one of the former capitals of the Spanish Empire and place of coexistence of Christian, Jewish and Moorish cultures. Many famous people and artists were born or lived in Toledo, including Al-Zarqali, Garcilaso de la Vega, Alfonso X and El Greco. It was also the place of important historic events such as the Visigothic Councils of Toledo. As of 2007, the city has a population of 78,618 and an area of 232.1 km² (89.59 square miles).
Toledo once served as the capital city of Visigothic Spain, beginning with Liuvigild (Leovigild), and was the capital until the Moors conquered Iberia in the 8th century. Under the Caliphate of Cordoba, Toledo enjoyed a golden age. This extensive period is known as La Convivencia, i.e. the co-existence of Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Under Arab rule, Toledo was called Tulaytulah (Arabic طليطلة, academically transliterated Ṭulayṭulah).
On May 25, 1085 Alfonso VI of Castile took Toledo and established direct personal control over the Moorish city from which he had been exacting tribute, and ending the mediaeval Taifa's Kingdom of Toledo . This was the first concrete step taken by the combined kingdom of Leon-Castile in the Reconquista by Christian forces.
Toledo was famed for its production of iron and especially of swords and the city is still a center for the manufacture of knives and other steel implements. When Philip II moved the royal court from Toledo to Madrid in 1561, the old city went into a slow decline from which it never recovered.
Toledo's Alcázar became renowned in the 19th and 20th centuries as a military academy. At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 its garrison was famously besieged by Republican forces.
Arts and culture
Toledo reached its zenith in the era of Islamic Caliphate. Historian P. de Gayangos writes:
The Muslim scientists of this age were not rivaled in the world. Perhaps among their greatest feats were the famous waterlocks of Toledo.[1]
The old city is located on a mountaintop with a 150 degrees view, surrounded on three sides by a bend in the Tagus River, and contains many historical sites, including the Alcázar, the cathedral (the primate church of Spain), and the Zocodover, a central market place.
From the 4th century to the 16th century about thirty synods were held at Toledo. The earliest, directed against Priscillian, assembled in 400. At the synod of 589 the Visigothic King Reccared declared his conversion from Arianism; the synod of 633 decreed uniformity of liturgy throughout the Visigothic kingdom and took stringent measures against baptized Jews who had relapsed into their former faith. The council of 681 assured to the archbishop of Toledo the primacy of Spain.
As nearly one hundred early canons of Toledo found a place in the Decretum Gratiani, they exerted an important influence on the development of ecclesiastical law. The synod of 1565–1566 concerned itself with the execution of the decrees of the Council of Trent; and the last council held at Toledo, 1582–1583, was guided in detail by Philip II.
Toledo was famed for religious tolerance and had large communities of Muslims and Jews until they were expelled from Spain in 1492 (Jews) and 1502 (Muslims). Today's city contains the religious monuments the Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca, the Synagogue of El Transito, Mosque of Cristo de la Luz and the church of San Sebastián dating from before the expulsion, still maintained in good condition. Among Ladino-speaking Sephardi Jews, in their various diasporas, the family name Toledano is still prevalent - indicating an ancestry traced back to this city (the name is also attested among non-Jews in various Spanish-speaking countries).
In the 13th century, Toledo was a major cultural center under the guidance of Alfonso X, called "El Sabio" ("the Wise") for his love of learning. The program of translations, begun under Archbishop Raymond of Toledo, continued to bring vast stores of knowledge to Europe by rendering great academic and philosophical works in Arabic into Latin. The Palacio de Galiana, built in the Mudéjar style, is one of the monuments that remain from that period.
The Cathedral of Toledo (Catedral de Toledo) was built between 1226-1493 and modeled after the Bourges Cathedral, though it

ETB (also EiTB) is short for Euskal Irrati Telebista (Basque Radio-television), the name of the Basque Country's public broadcast service.
The EiTB group is the leading media group in the Basque Country with five television channels and five radio stations. Their channels are also broadcast in Navarre, and people in nearby territories such as Burgos (in Castile and León), Cantabria, Huesca (province) and Zaragoza (province) (in Aragon), La Rioja, and Pyrénées-Atlantiques (in France) can also get the signal. It has been running since 1982 and during this period it has established itself as a major media organization, connecting with more than a million people every day. The majority of EiTB's broadcasts deal with local news and entertainment.
On May 20th 1982 the Basque Parliament unanimously approved the law that set up Euskal Irrati Telebista and on November 23rd, the television channel Euskadi Irratia started broadcasting. EiTB, for its part, reached Basque households at midnight on December 31st 1982 with a presentation by the Basque Lehendakari Carlos Garaikoetxea and its programmes were regularized, starting from February 16th in the following year. At the time about 30 people worked in the ETB centre in Iurreta to provide programmes exclusively in Basque.
Several years later, ETB-2 commenced operations on 31 May 1986. This channel broadcasts in Spanish, and at the present time it has a further two international channels. Following an agreement between Sogecable and EiTB, 87 million households all over Europe have been able to pick up ETB Sat from the ASTRA satellite since May 2001. It may be picked up via Sogecable's Digital Plus satellite-TV service throughout Spain. The EiTB Group’s fourth television station is Canal Vasco, a medium specifically geared towards America, where it reaches viewers through American DTH and cable companies.
Following the implementation of Digital terrestrial television, the Basque government allowed EiTB to create two new digital television channels. [1] The first one, ETB-3, started broadcasting on October 2008[2], offering programming for children and youngsters in Basque. The second will be a bilingual news channel. [3].
The EiTB group also has five radio stations with more than 300,000 listeners every day - Euskadi Irratia, Radio Euskadi, Radio Vitoria, Euskadi Gaztea and EiTB Irratia respectively.
