The purpose of the Legion was to remove disruptive elements from society and put them to use fighting the enemies of France. 12. French Imperialism (Guest Lecture by Charles Keith)
France Since 1871 (HIST 276)
France's colonial properties were thought of in the latter half of the nineteenth century as consolation for the bitter loss of Alsace and Lorraine to Germany. As civilian administrators came to replace military personnel in the colonies, and as more and more French settlers arrived, empire and colonialism came to play an important function in France's cultural self-presentation. World War I heralded the eventual decline of the French empire, a decline realized at the hands of the colonized subjects themselves.

England, Colony of France
A brief, humoristic and necessary recall about the French legacy in Britain.
"During the century and a half after the Conquest, there is no English history. The French Kings of England rose to an eminence which was the wonder of all nations (). The Conqueror and his descendants were not Englishmen: most of them were born in France: they spent their lives in France: their speech was French: every high office was for a Frenchman: every acquisition on the Continent estranged them from our population".

Qing Empire, China - Yuan Khanate Umayyad Caliphate - Second French Colonial Empire - Abbasid Caliphate - An empire involves the extension of a state's sovereignty over territories all around the world. For example, because of the British Empire's territories around the globe, it was often said in the 19th century that "the sun never sets on the British Empire." This phrase could have been applied before with the Spanish Empire [1] and it was used later to describe the Russian Empire. This article provides a list of the largest empires in world history.

Behind the scenes of the world wars (Harun Yahya)
The 20th century was the bloodiest age in all of world history.
During this era, for the first time, humanity was introduced to the concept of a "world war."
Taken together, World Wars I and II resulted in a total of 65 million people losing their lives. About half of these casualties were civilians who had nothing to do with these wars. Children, defenseless women and the elderly alike were massacred cruelly. So, one might ask, how did the world find itself in the midst of such colossal insanity?
How did people so easily sacrifice both their own nations and those of others? What sort of thought lay behind this cruelty? In this film, you can discover the answers.
BEHIND THE VEIL OF WAR
Wars have existed almost since the dawn of humanity itself. Competing political and economic interests led people to take arms against one another. Weapons and armies have developed hand-in-hand, and so wars have grown ever more violent and destructive.
However, until the 20th century, wars took the form of "front battles" in which soldiers of two armies would meet on both sides of a battlefield and the fighting would revolve around this axis. In these conflicts, it was the soldiers alone who were killed.
But in the 20th century, a new breed of war was born, one targeting not only soldiers but also the masses of people. The effects of such wars would be felt in not just a handful of countries but rather were like they had taken the entire world into their terrible maw.
Throughout history, war has inflicted great suffering and losses to society. A number of prophets who were sent to the people as messengers warned them against this calamity and turmoil.
And to Madyan We sent their brother Shu'ayb, he said, "My people, worship God and look to the Last Day and do not act unjustly on earth, corrupting it." (Qur'an, 29: 36)
Through the voice of their prophets, the Israelites made a promise to God not to shed blood:
And when We made a covenant with you not to shed your blood and not to expel one another from your homes, you agreed and were all witnesses. (Qur'an, 2: 84)
WORLD WAR ONE
In 19th century Europe, colonialism was widespread. European powers such as Great Britain and France had established colonial empires in all four corners of the world. Germany, which had established its political unity later than other countries, was striving to become a forerunner in this race.
By the beginning of the 20th century, interest-based relations had split Europe into two opposing poles. Britain, France and Russia were on one side, and Germany and the Austria-Hungarian Empire ruled by the Hapsburgs of German origin were on the other.
The tension between these two groups escalated with each passing day, and finally an assassination in 1914 provided the spark for war. Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne in the Austria-Hungarian Empire, was killed by Serbian nationalists who sought to curb the empire's influence in the Balkans.
Within a very short period of time, provocations following on the heels of this incident pulled the entire European continent into war. First Austria-Hungary declared war against Serbia. Russia, a traditional ally of the Serbians, then declared war against Austria-Hungary.
Then one after another, Germany, Britain and France entered the war. The fuse had been lit.
Before the war had even begun, the German General Staff had drawn up a plan and decided to take control of France through a sudden attack. To achieve this aim, the Germans entered Belgium and later crossed the border into France. Responding quickly, the French army stopped the Germans on the banks of the River Marne and started a counter-offensive.
Although both armies suffered serious losses, no progress on the battlefront was to be found. Both the German and French soldiers hid in trenches in order to protect themselves. As the result of a series of attacks stretching over several months, some 400,000 French soldiers were killed. The death toll of German soldiers reached 350,000.
Trench warfare became the main strategy of World War I. Over the next few years, soldiers practically lived in these trenches. Life there was difficult in the extreme. Soldiers lived under the constant threat of being bombarded, and they constantly faced extreme stress and fear. The bodies of those who died had to remain in these places, and soldiers had to sleep next to the corpses. When it rained, the trenches overflowed with mud.
More than 20 million soldiers who fought in World War I suffered horrific conditions in these trenches, and most of them died there.
Within a few weeks of its being established by a 1914 German attack, the war's western front was essentially fixed in a stalemate.
The soldiers burrowed in these trenches were trapped at a distance of only a few hundred meters away from each other. Every attack launched in an effort to end this stalemate was going to cost more lives

[English/French Subtitles] Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah(HA) - War On Terror - March 21, 2002
Landmark speech by Hizbullah Secretary General - delivered on the 20st of March 2002 (6th Muharram 1423) regarding the recently (at that time recently) US imposed so-called "War on Terrorism" - following the attacks on the World Trade Centre Towers in New York.
This version has English and French Subtitles.
"The racial discrimination towards the blacks is still persisting in every aspect. Moreover, there is a racial discrimination towards the Red Indians who are the original inhabitants of the country. ...I tell you frankly that if it wasn't for the determined willingness, ... and fight of the Palestinian people, the Americans and their civilization would have decided to solve that problem of...Palestinians just like they did with the Indians. This is the picture that lies in the mind of the American." --Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah
Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah - Muharram 7, 1423
The Secretary General of Hizbullah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah(HA), addressing the people on the seventh night of Muharram for the year 1423 (March 20, 2002)
In this lecture, Sayyed Hassan(HA), explains the roots of Zionist occupation and American colonialism and so-called "New World Order", this is well worth reading.
In the Name of Allah the most Beneficent and most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah the lord of the world, and may peace and Allah's praises be upon our master and prophet, the purifier of our sins, and the love of our hearts Mohammed ibn Abdullah followed by his pure progeny, rightful followers, and all the martyrs and mujahideen for Allah's teachings since the birth of Adam until the day of judgment.
May peace be upon you my lord and master Abu Abdullah Al Hussein, and upon those spirits who are floating around thy grave.
I send you my adoration as long as night follows day.
I ask my dear Allah to keep me committed to continuously visit thee and thy family.
May peace be upon Al Hussein, Ali the son of Al Hussein, the sons of Al Hussein, and the followers of Al Hussein.
Dear brothers and sisters, May peace be upon you all;
Allah says in his Glory book Verily, Fir'aun (Pharaoh) exalted himself in the land and made its people sects, weakening (oppressing) a group (i.e. Children of Israel) among them: killing their sons, and letting their females live. Verily, he was of the Mufsidûn (i.e. those who commit great sins and crimes, oppressors, tyrants). And We wished to do a favor to those who were weak (and oppressed) in the land, and to make them rulers and to make them the inheritors, And to establish them in the land, and We let Fir'aun (Pharaoh) and Hâmân and their hosts receive from them that which they feared.
Let's remember some of the words in my speech I read to you on the first night.
I said that Al Hussein may peace be upon him, rose up and fought with the very few members of his family and his companions. He was protecting Islam, the values of Islam, and the existence of this religion, in order to prevent its termination, transformation, vanishing, or the manipulation of its teachings in an aim to send the people back to the early days of ignorance.
I added saying that there are many challenges at this time in which we are living. The declaration of war by the American Administration these days is nothing but a war on Islam, on the values of Islam, on the understandings of Islam, on the Quraan of Islam, and on the Prophet of Islam on the grounds that the existence this religion lives among the people of this nation and its Muslim followers.
I would like to stand up today in the atmosphere of this declaration of war to try and comprehend, explain, and realize the issues widely surrounding us. Consequently we'll realize our stand, the enemy we are facing, and the sort of reality or fact we are living in at this present time.
When we go back and read some of the words or phrases of the American president Bush speeches during the past few days, weeks and months, we will find that some of his words and phrases identified the title of this war.
For example, from what he said: it is the responsibility of each American at the present time to guarantee the domination and the spread of the American values in other parts of this world. I repeat the domination and the spread of the American values in other parts of this world. He spoke these words while he was addressing his officers and soldiers, encouraging them to be patient, endure and tolerate the difficulties.
He told them we are fighting for the values of civilization (of course it would be the materialistic American civilization!). He promises to send forces to this country or that in more than one occasion, and that he aims at transferring the values of the American society to the various countries, societies, and states, since terror cannot be exterminated by the means of military and security only. Yet he says it should be fought by means of culture, which means that we should wipe out the culture that gives birth to terrorists and uprisings, in order to replace it

October 30, 2011
Good morning brothers and sisters here in New York City and across this great country. Welcome to the West Coast, the blessed coast, the East Coast, and the Northeast, where a nor’easter unexpectedly hit (We had 24 inches of snow last night, even before the leaves were off the trees!). And welcome, brothers and sisters, in large congregations. In Los Angeles this morning our District Pastors are meeting, and they’re joining the congregation in watching today’s sermon at a movie theater. We have brothers and sisters in congregations all across our great country – in the Midwest, in Chicago and other cities, and in small homes. We’re an amazing congregation, so welcome, everybody!
Did you enjoy True Children’s Day and Foundation Day? Wasn’t it wonderful to see our True Parents. Father probably gave the shortest speech ever? But even so his and True Mother’s incredible love shone through.
I also bring greetings from our senior pastor, Rev. In Jin Moon, this morning, to all of you across America.
My theme this morning is how God works in unexpected ways in our lives, whereby we have to become flexible and open. Who’d have thought that Elvis would come to church? Our church is ever changing, ever growing. One thing I’ve learned is “God is totally out of the box.” Anybody who thought God was a boring figure in the sky with a long gray beard – uh, uh. No. Actually, God is dynamic. He’s young. She’s innovative. And we have to be that way, too.
Surviving “Hellfire and Damnation”
God is working in incredible ways in our lives, and we need to be open and flexible if we are going to be able to hear and experience God. I know that many of you are young too, and you also have young children. We should never underestimate what our children are thinking about. When I was seven years old, I went to a Catholic school. My family lived in the island nation of Mauritius, which is in the Indian Ocean, and I was schooled by Sister John, who looked like an eagle. She had sharp, piercing eyes. God bless Sister John. And she didn’t miss a thing.
I was just seven years old but I didn’t miss a thing, either. What I understood was that in order to go to heaven, one had to believe in Jesus. But what if you never met Jesus? What if you didn’t know? In this small island nation the people were very diverse. We had Muslims and Hindus. It was once a French colony, so we spoke French and there were French people there. So there was Catholicism, Hinduism, and Islam. At seven years old, I began to wonder, “What if you’re a really good Hindu? Can you go to heaven?”
Sister John talked about hellfire and damnation. I’m sure that in Catholic schools today it’s not like this, but at that time it was, and I remember my older sister, Vivienne, used to have tremendous nightmares about hellfire and damnation, and I began to wonder. So one day I was very brave and put up my hand in Sister John’s class. I said, “Excuse me, what if you’re a really good Hindu and you do everything Hindus are meant to do? You love your family, you love your children, you serve others. Can you go to heaven?” And of course Sister John said, “No, it doesn’t work like that.”
And I had this huge ah-ha moment, a realization dawned on me, “Wow, my heart is bigger than God’s because I’d let them in!” That’s the sort of things that seven-year-olds are thinking about. That’s why we’re a family church, and it’s so important as parents that we’re talking to our children about things that matter. That’s what I began to wonder about. And as I stayed in school, I just continued to wonder why this religion can’t answer all of my questions.
Searching for God, in and out of Catholic School
Then we moved back to Great Britain, and I continued in school. Then at 11 years old I failed the Eleven-Plus. Anybody from England knows what that means. It’s like an SAT for 11 year olds. It was a multiple-choice standardized test, and I do terrible on standardized tests because I have a creative mind. When the test gives a problem whose answer is A, B, C, or D, I’m going, “It could be A. On the other hand, it could be B if this were true, and wait a minute, no, C.” So I’m spending all this time trying to work out under what circumstances A, B, C, and D could be correct. Needless to say, I did dismally.
Of course after anyone fails the Eleven-Plus, the British system would require that the student go into vocational education. So my parents said, “We’ve got to do something about this,” and they sent me back to Catholic school, where there was a Sister John Michael who taught the religion class. I had lots of questions about religion by this time because it clearly couldn’t answer the questions I had about God and faith, but I studied hard. I was the only non-Catholic in

You've Got Mali: Hollande's neo-colonial warfare killing French welfare
Once the world's second-largest colonial empire, France may be striving to regain influence in its former African colonies, the Mali operation being part of such policy. Many believe Mali as well as neighboring Niger are keys to France's energy security. And French President Hollande can't risk harm to his economy - because as RT's Maria Finoshina reports - there are increasing doubts about whether or not he can turn it around.
