7. Behavioral Finance: The Role of Psychology
Financial Markets (ECON 252) Behavioral Finance is a relatively recent revolution in finance that applies insights from all of the social sciences to finance. New decision-making models incorporate psychology and sociology, among other disciplines, to explain economic and financial phenomenon, such as erratic stock price variations. Psychological patterns such as overconfidence and perceived kinks in the value function seem to impact financial decision-making, but are not included in classical theories such as the Expected Utility Theory. Kahneman and Tversky's Prospect Theory addresses such issues and sheds light on irrational deviations from traditional decision-making models. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Psychologist Lt. Col. Dave Grossman On The Act Of Killing
Psychology professor Lt. Col. Dave Grossman talks about his new book "On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society". He maintains that it is inherent in us to resist killing our own species and that research has proven that many soldiers engaged in face-to-face combat found it difficult to kill. Soldiers can be trained however, to overcome that resistance. Some veterans are still plagued with guilt about taking another man's life, but this guilt can be eased if they are assured that what they did was right. Addressing the rise in civilian murders, he believes that part of the reason is that children are becoming desensitized to violence because they are associating the bombardment of graphic images by the media with pleasure. (Originally aired March 1996).

2. Foundations: This Is Your Brain
Introduction to Psychology (PSYC 110) This lecture introduces students to two broad theories of how the mind relates to the body. Dualism is the ubiquitous and intuitive feeling that our conscious mind is separate from our physical bodies, whereas Materialism is the idea that all of our mental states are caused by physical states of the brain. This lecture reviews arguments explaining why materialism has become the predominant theory of mind in psychology. This discussion is followed by a basic overview of the neurophysiology of the brain. 00:00 - Chapter 1. The Brain, the Mind and Dualism 12:06 - Chapter 2. Scientific Consensus Against Dualism 19:28 - Chapter 3. The Neuron: The Basic Building Blocks of Thought 32:58 - Chapter 4. The Different Parts of the Brain 44:47 - Chapter 5. Mechanist Conception and the Hard Problem of Consciousness Complete course materials are available at the Open Yale Courses website: open.yale.edu This course was recorded in Spring 2007.

An Evening with Psychologist Paul Ekman
On His New Book with the Dalai Lama Presented by Greater Good Magazine A unique bond formed between the Dalai Lama and Paul Ekman when the two first met in 2000. The leader of Tibetan Buddhism and the renowned Western-trained scientist soon realized that despite their different educational and religions backgrounds, they shared the same motivation for analyzing emotions: a commitment to reducing human suffering. Following their first encounter, the two men spent 40 hours in discussion over three subsequent meetings, believing that the combined insight of Buddhism and Western psychology would lead to new understandings of human emotion. These groundbreaking conversations are captured in their new book, Emotional Awareness: Overcoming the Obstacles to Psychological Balance and Compassion. As they discuss the roots of love, compassion, anger, and morality, the two men offer stunning insight into what unifies us all. At this free event, Ekman--one of the world's foremost authorities on emotions and facial expressions, and a member of Greater Good magazine's editorial board--will present highlights from their discussions, accompanied by photos and audio excerpts from his conversations with the Dalai Lama. A Q&A; with the audience will follow. Copies of Emotional Awareness and the latest issue of Greater Good magazine, which includes a contribution from Ekman and his daughter Eve, will be on sale. Featured speaker: Paul Ekman, Ph.D., is the world's foremost expert on facial ...

Psychologist Bruce Levine: Surviving America's Depression Epidemic
Clinical psychologist Bruce Levine is the author of Common Sense Rebellion and Surviving America's Depression Epidemic. He regularly deals with "anti-authoritarian" clients who would be diagnosed by the health care authorities as suffering from "oppositional defiant disorder" or ADHD, and helps them to deal with adjusting to their societal, work or school environment without rebelling in a self-destructive manner. In a psychiatric context, Levine explains how successful political movements like the American Revolution and the more recent populist uprising are historically led by people who have individual self-respect, something very much lacking in today's society, as well as collective confidence and trust in one another. "When you're living in a society that breaks people's self-respect and breaks their bonds of trust with one another, it makes it very difficult to have any kind of democratic revolutionary movement," remarks Levine. Levine identifies the process of "learned helplessness" as one of the primary factors that has led to society feeling broken, demoralized, hopeless and defeated. He cites an experiment involving dogs where both groups of animals were subjected to electro-shocks, wherein one group of dogs was able to stop the electro-shocks and the other was not. The dogs not able to stop the shocks moved into passivity and depression, and even when presented with the opportunity to escape did not even try to take it because they had learned helplessness ...
