The Barbican Centre is owned, funded, and managed by the City of London Corporation, the third-largest arts funder in the United Kingdom. It was built as the city's gift to the nation at a cost of £161 million (equivalent to £400 million in 2007), and opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 3 March 1982.

Designing 007 - 50 Years Of Bond Style
6 Jul -- 5 Sep 2012
The Barbican marks the 50th anniversary of the James Bond franchise, from 1962's Dr No to this year's Skyfall, with a unique exhibition showcasing the inside story of the design and style of the world's most influential and iconic movie brand.
In collaboration with EON Productions and with unprecedented access to their archives, Designing 007 will be a multi-sensory experience, immersing audiences in the creation and development of Bond style over its auspicious 50 year history.
It will explore the craft behind the screen icons, the secret service and villains, tailoring and costumes, set and production design, automobiles, gadgets and special effects, graphic design and motion graphics, exotic locations, stunts and props.
Highlights include gadgets and weapons made for Bond and his notorious adversaries by special effects experts John Stears and Chris Corbould, along with artwork for sets and storyboards by production designers Sir Ken Adam, Peter Lamont and Syd Cain, and costume designs by Bumble Dawson, Donfeld, Julie Harris, Lindy Hemming, Ronald Patterson, Emma Porteous, and Jany Temime.
On display too will be lavish screen finery by Hollywood costume designers and major fashion names including Giorgio Armani, Brioni, Roberto Cavalli, Tom Ford, Hubert de Givenchy, Gucci's Frida Giannini, Douglas Hayward, Rifat Ozbek, Jenny Packham, Miuccia Prada, Oscar de la Renta, Anthony Sinclair, Philip Treacy, Emanuel Ungaro and Donatella Versace.
Designing 007 will transform the Barbican, taking the audience on a journey - a 'making of' and presentation of Bond style over 50 years.
The exhibition is designed by Ab Rogers and curated by the Barbican, with guest-curation by fashion historian Bronwyn Cosgrave and Oscar®-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming.

RAIN ROOM - Barbican, London
Walking through the Rain Room, at the Barbican Arts Centre in London.
The Rain Room has 3D sensors which can track your movements as you walk through the room, and then automatically stop water dropping down from the valves above your head so you don't get wet. It's a lot of fun.

The Centre comprises the 1,949 seat Barbican Hall, the 1,166-seat Barbican Theatre, the 200-seat Pit theatre, 1 Cinema (with 2 new screens opening in 2012), the 1,393 m2 Barbican Art Gallery, a second gallery; The Curve, 4,645m2 of foyers and public spaces, the Lakeside Terrace, a roof-top tropical conservatory, 7 conference suites, 2 trade exhibition halls, private function rooms and 3 restaurants; Barbican Foodhall, Barbican Lounge and Searcys.

Random International: Rain Room at Barbican Centre, London
http://www.vernissage.tv | Random International are known for their digital-based contemporary art. The London-based studio creates artworks and installations that explore behaviour and interaction. One of Random International's most recent work is called The Rain Room, currently on display at the Barbican Centre's exhibition space The Curve in London.
More info and photo set: http://vernissage.tv/blog/2012/11/09/random-international-rain-room-the-curve-barbican-centre-london/
The Rain Room is a hundred square meter field of falling water through which it is possible to walk, without getting wet. Upon entering The Curve, the sound of water and a sensation of moisture fill the air, even before seeing the installation. In this video, we enter the downpour, and speak with the artists who have created this spectacular installation.
Rain Room is a very complex installation. It consists of injection moulded tiles, solenoid valves, pressure regulators, 3D tracking cameras, wooden frames, steel beams, a hydraulic management system, and a grated floor. The system is controlled by custom software.
Random International was founded in 2005 by Stuart Wood, Florian Ortkrass and Hannes Koch. They first met when they were students at the Royal College of Art in London. The studio is based in a converted warehouse in Chelsea, London. Random International have exhibited at art fairs, museums and biennials with works and installations such as Pixelroller, Temporary Graffiti, Audience, Study For A Mirror, Swarm Light, Self Portrait, Temporary Printing Machine, and Rain Room.
