Non-Aligned Movement conference in Tehran
This week Iran witnessed maybe one of the biggest international gatherings in its history. Representatives from more than 120 countries came for the 16th summit of the non-aligned-movement; movement that, after the United Nations, has the most members. Such a big event has warranted a lot of preparation on Iran's part. Iran's police have deployed 110 thousand security forces, and a lot of office buildings across the capital have been close for at least five days.
In the run up to the NAM summit in Tehran western and Israeli media strove to downplay the significance of the event. Nevertheless state officials from more than 50 countries came to Tehran. Iran has been a member for 33 years but this is the first time it will be assuming the presidency of the Non-Aligned-Movement.
In this edition of the show we'll be talking about the NAM summit in Tehran, and discussing NAM's doctrine and goals in general.

'NAM summit: Iran diplomatic triumph'
The Non Aligned Movement consists of some 120 members and 17 observer members. Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, in 1979 defined the purpose of the Non Aligned Movement as "the national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of non-aligned countries" in their "struggle against imperialism colonialism, neo-colonialism, racism and all forms of foreign aggression." Lots of revolutionary ideas but how close is NAM to this vision will be looked at on this News Analysis. We will also take a look at the original purpose of this organization and what has or has not been accomplished by it since its inception in 1961.

'US becoming increasingly isolated'
The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has arrived in Tehran to take part in the Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement, a bloc of countries that don't consider themselves in union with the U.S. Washington has voiced criticism of the UN chief's visit to Iran and of the gathering in general.
Despite Iran's willingness and ability to help find a solution to the Syria crisis, any ideas put forward by Tehran could be met with resistance, says author and journalist Afshin Rattansi.

non aligned movement alive and kicking
Non-Aligned Summit
Politics is not usually associated with sentimentality -- and yet I drifted into the past while following the recent Non-Aligned Summit held in Tehran -- why sentimental? -- because it took me back to one of my favourite statesmen, Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of an independent India -- who with Gamal Abdul Nasser, the firebrand president of Egypt, Marshall Tito, an equally ferocious president of Yugoslavia, and General Sukarno of Indonesia founded the non alignment movement -- NAM was one of the most fascinating movements at a time when America and England were quickly dividing the world into blocs of communists versus so called free nations -- NAM brought together scores of nations from Asia, Africa, the Middle East and even Eastern Europe -- and created a group for which coexistence meant more than fighting the bogey man of communism or capitalism-- somewhere along the line this inspiring idea disappeared from the news pages -- but then with a 120 member states including such old members as India and Indonesia and others attending the Tehran conference, and the Internet turning the world into a Global Village, I caught up again with NAM -- I read how these 120 members unanimously condemned American and European sanctions against Iran and supported its nuclear program -- they condemned Islamophobia emanating from the Western World -- the urgency of resolving the Israel Palestine conflict and giving Palestinians their homeland -- where was Canada in all this, I wondered -- given its large and diverse multicultural population from different countries, shouldn't it be part of the non aligned movement rather than hanging out with the white boys of NATO and bombing Iraq and Libya? -- killing the relatives of these new Canadians? -- think about it, I'm Zuhair Kashmeri.

Non-Aligned Movement Summit Resolution Supports Iran - Países Não-Alinhados
Expressa Apoio ao Irã
The final resolution of the 16th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) has been adopted unanimously.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad read out the resolution, which included over seven-hundred clauses, in the final session of the summit on Friday night.
The final communiqué expressed support for Iran's nuclear energy program, rejected the United States' unilateral sanctions against the Islamic Republic, and called for greater efforts to support the Palestinian cause.
The need to combat Islamophobia and racism throughout the world as well as global nuclear disarmament were some of the other key issues mentioned in the document.
In the closing ceremony, President Ahmadinejad hailed the resolution as "effective and historic" and expressed his gratitude to all of the participants of the summit, which he said had a very important message for the entire world.
The draft resolution had been drawn up and approved during the NAM meetings of senior officials and foreign ministers.
Over 100 countries sent representatives to the NAM summit, which kicked off on Sunday with a two-day expert-level meeting in the Iranian capital, followed by a foreign ministerial meeting that ended on Wednesday.
Iran assumed the rotating presidency of NAM for a three-year term on Thursday, when the meeting of heads of state and government opened with an inaugural speech by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
NAM is an international organization with 120 member states that is not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. Nearly two-thirds of the countries of the UN are also NAM members.
