Remembering Marian McPartland, Margaret Pelligrini
Two Amazing Women THE JAZZ RADIO HOST AND THE MUNCHKIN Marian McPartland was a wonderful jazz pianist from Great Britain who brought jazz to millions with her wonderful radio programs on jazz featuring many of the 20thCentury greats. . Margaret Pelligrini was The Flower Pot Girl, one of the munchkins in the Wizard Of Oz and she developed a wonderful relationship with Judy Garland. Margaret Marian McPartland, OBE (née Turner;[1] 20 March 1918 -- 20 August 2013), was an English-born American jazz pianist, composer and writer. She was the host of Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz on National Public Radio from 1978 until 2011.[2] After her marriage to Jimmy McPartland in February 1945,[3] she resided in the United States when not traveling throughout the world to perform. In 1969 she founded Halcyon Records, a recording company that produced albums for ten years. In 2000 she was named a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master. In 2004 she was given a Grammy Award for lifetime achievement. In 2007 she was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame. Known mostly for jazz, nonetheless, she composed other types of music as well, performing her own symphonic work A Portrait of Rachel Carson with the University of South Carolina Symphony Orchestra in 2007. In 2010 she was named a member of the Order of the British Empire. McPartland was awarded a Grammy in 2004, a Trustees' Lifetime Achievement Award, for her work as an educator, writer, and host of NPR Radio's long-running Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz. Although a master at adapting to her guest's musical styles and having a well-known affinity for beautiful and harmonically-rich ballads, she also recorded many tunes of her own. Her compositions included "Ambiance," "There'll Be Other Times," "With You In Mind," "Twilight World," and "In the Days of Our Love." Just before her 90th birthday, McPartland composed and performed a symphonic piece, A Portrait of Rachel Carson, to mark the centennial of the environmental pioneer.[6] McPartland was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2010 New Year Honours, "For services to jazz and to aspiring young musicians in the USA".[7] McPartland's encyclopaedic knowledge of jazz standards, highly musical ear, involvement in over 60 years of evolving jazz styles, and rich experience blending with radio guests[8] led to a musical style that was described as "flexible and complex, and almost impossible to pigeonhole."[9] She was known as a harmonically and rhythmically complex and inventive improviser. "She was never content to be in one place, and always kept improving. She has great ears and great harmonics. Because of her ear, she can go into two or three different keys in a tune and shift with no problem.- published: 24 Sep 2013

Making Sense of Big Data - Professor Sir Mark Walport
What is big data, and what are its potential benefits and risks? The evolving use of large datasets is rarely out of the headlines, prompting intense debate on privacy and security. From medical records through to GPS signals, the ability to collect large amounts of data holds great potential for research, innovation and productivity. It also means that governments across the globe are grappling with the questions posed by the data being harvested -- how to handle it, how to govern its use and how it can impact on policy. Drawing on his extensive work on the subject and his passion for open access science, Sir Mark Walport, Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK Government, will look at how we can make sense of the phenomenon of big data in order to reap the benefits. Sir Mark Walport FRS FMedSci is the Chief Scientific Adviser to HM Government and Head of the Government Office for Science. Previously, Sir Mark was Director of the Wellcome Trust, which is a global charitable foundation dedicated to achieving extraordinary improvements in human and animal health by supporting the brightest minds. Before joining the Trust he was Professor of Medicine and Head of the Division of Medicine at Imperial College London. He has been a member of the Prime Minister's Council for Science and Technology since 2004. He has also been a member of the India UK CEO Forum, the UK India Round Table and the advisory board of Infrastructure UK and a non-executive member of the Office for Strategic Coordination of Health Research. He is a member of a number of international advisory bodies. He has undertaken independent reviews for the UK Government on the use and sharing of personal information in the public and private sectors: 'Data Sharing Review' (2009); and secondary education: 'Science and Mathematics: Secondary Education for the 21st Century' (2010). He received a knighthood in the 2009 New Year Honours List for services to medical research and was elected as Fellow of The Royal Society in 2011.
