2016 Election Special Part 2: Daejeon, Chungcheong & Gangwon-do Provinces
총선지역분석 시리즈 2: 충청, 세종, 강원
Continuing with our election special.
In this installment, we break down constituencies in the nation's central regions.
Here's
Park Ji-won with the second of our 4-parter.
Korea's central region includes cities like
Daejeon and the administrative center
Sejong,
... Chungcheong-do Province,... as well as eastern
Gangwon-do Province.
Together, they represent 35 parliamentary seats this election,... or slightly less than 14-percent of the total 253 local seats.
Despite a relatively small share of the total seats,
.. these regions are often considered influential and unpredictable,... because of no clear political inclination like other provinces such as the left-leaning
Jeolla-do Province, and conservative stronghold
Gyeongsang-do Province.
Back in
2012,...the ruling conservative
Saenuri Party fared better by taking 12 seats at that time,... compared to the main opposition party's 9 seats in the cities of Daejeon and Sejong, and in Chungcheong-do.
The other three seats went to the Chungcheong-do-based conservative minority party,.. which no longer exists.
With no parties representing Chungcheong-do Province this time around,.. recent polls indicate that the ruling Saenuri Party will win 13 out of 19 constituencies.
This is partly because opposition votes are divided, with the new minor opposition
People's Party in the mix,...
as we can see in
Cheonan,.. one of the major cities in the central province,... where ruling Saenuri Party's
Park Chan-woo is leading both opposition candidates Han Tae-sun,... Lee Jong-seol.
But the main opposition
Minjoo Party has been enjoying a strong showing in the one-point-five million strong city of Daejeon,... where the liberal party is expected to win four seats out of seven constituencies.
In Yuseong-B district in Daejeon city,.. the main opposition Minjoo Party's three-term lawmaker
Lee Sang-min is edging out the ruling conservative party's Kim Shin-ho,.. despite divided liberal votes.
Over in the east, Gangwon-do Province, where about three-percent of the
Korean population resides,... the ruling conservative party swept all nine seats in the region four years ago.
While a recent poll shows that the conservative party is expected to win most of the local seats,... in
Wonju B district,... one of the biggest cities in the Province,... the ruling Saenuri Party's Lee Kang-hoo is in a tight race with main opposition candidate
Song Ki-heon.
The two candidates ran for the same seat four years ago,... when the ruling party's Lee defeated liberal Song by a 2-point-five percentage
point margin.
