Aleut Story
The incredible, untold story of Aleut Americans' decades-long struggle for human and civil rights. In the turbulence of war, in a place where survival was just short of miraculous, the Aleuts of Alaska would redefine themselves -- and America. From indentured servitude and isolated internment camps, to Congress and the White House, this is the incredible story of the Aleuts' decades-long struggle for our nation's ideals. Narrated by Martin Sheen and original music score by Grammy winner Mary Youngblood, the program draws compelling parallels to the present, as our country is grapples with challenging questions of balance between civil liberties and national security. Alaska Aleutian Natives Dance
Alaska Native Dance. I was so fortunate to see this Alaska traditional dance show on the January of 2011. It is part of the celebration of Alaska Native festival. Every year there gonna be a show in the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Davis Concert Hall. The sad thing about it is most of those traditions are disappearing.

The Artistry and History of Aleutian Islands Bentwood Hats
Alaska Native artist Patty Lekanoff-Gregory explains the technique and artistry of making Unangax (Aleut) bentwood hats and visors. She also shares the importance of these hats in traditional Aleutian Islands culture. Patty was born and raised in Unalaska, on Unalaska Island in the Aleutian Islands chain of Alaska, which is the westernmost part of the United States. She is the daughter of Nicholai S. Lekanoff, originally from the now abandoned village of Makushin (Unalaska Island), and Polly Kudrin Lekanoff, originally from the now abandoned village of Kashega (Unalaska Island). AleutCultureCamp
The Urban Unangax/Aleut Culture Camp is held during the summer, 9am- 8pm daily, at Unangam Ulaa (Home of the Aleuts), Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association's central office in Anchorage. Cultural mentors impart their knowledge through instruction in traditional activities. Last year 150 children, youth and adults built and launched the first-of-its-kind Urban Aleut kayak! Camp participants also created 50 bentwood hunting visors; learned 5 traditional dances; built 40 drums; cleaned and prepared 30 salmon; sewed 10 headdresses and 15 medicine bags; learned phrases and songs in the Aleut language; learned Native Youth Olympic skills; and crafted 40 Attu style basket weavings. All this in 7 fun-filled, energetic days! The intended outcome is to provide the community of Anchorage an opportunity to learn about the history, traditions, and customs of the Aleut heritage through involvement in activities and fellowship with Aleut Elders and community members.
