Brackenridge Park is a 343-acre public park in San Antonio, Texas, USA, on the city's Broadway Corridor just north of downtown San Antonio. It was created in 1899 from land donated to the city by George Washington Brackenridge.
Brackenridge Park also refers to the district of the city where the park is located.
Attractions within the park include the San Antonio Zoo, the Japanese Tea Gardens, the Sunken Garden Theater, and the 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge San Antonio Zoo Eagle train ride, which first opened in 1956 and utilizes three Chance Rides C.P. Huntington locomotives. Other nearby attractions include the Witte Museum and the San Antonio Botanical Garden.
Inside the park, there are multiple baseball fields, playgrounds, pavilions, and walking trails.
San Antonio (/ˌsænænˈtoʊni.oʊ/ Spanish for "Saint Anthony"), officially the City of San Antonio, is the seventh most populated city in the United States of America and the second most populated city in the state of Texas, with a population of 1,409,019. It was the fastest growing of the top 10 largest cities in the United States from 2000 to 2010, and the second from 1990 to 2000. The city is located in the American Southwest, the south–central part of Texas, and the southwestern corner of an urban region known as the Texas Triangle.
San Antonio serves as the seat of Bexar County. Recent annexations have extended the city's boundaries into Medina County and, though for only a very tiny area near the city of Garden Ridge, into Comal County. The city has characteristics of other western urban centers in which there are sparsely populated areas and a low density rate outside of the city limits. San Antonio is the center of the San Antonio–New Braunfels Metropolitan Statistical Area. Commonly referred to as Greater San Antonio, the metropolitan area has a population of over 2.3 million based on the 2014 US Census estimate, making it the 25th-largest metropolitan area in the United States and third-largest in the state of Texas. Growth along the Interstate 35 and Interstate 10 corridors to the north, west and east make it likely that the metropolitan area will continue to expand.
A park is an area of natural, semi-natural, or planted space set aside for human enjoyment and recreation or for the protection of wildlife or natural habitats. It may consist of grassy areas, rocks, soil, and trees, but may also contain buildings and other artifacts such as monuments, fountains or playground structures. In North America, many parks have fields for playing sports such as soccer, baseball and football, and paved areas for games such as basketball. Many parks have trails for walking, biking and other activities. Some parks are built adjacent to bodies of water or watercourses, and these parks may comprise a beach or boat dock area. Often, the smallest parks are in urban areas, where a park may take up only a city block or less. Urban parks often have benches for sitting and they may contain picnic tables and barbecue grills. Parks have differing rules regarding whether dogs can be brought into the park: some parks prohibit dogs; some parks allow them with restrictions (e.g., use of a leash); and some parks, which may be called "dog parks," permit dogs to run off-leash.
The San Antonio Zoological Gardens and Aquarium is an Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited zoo in Midtown San Antonio, Texas, United States. The 35-acre (14 ha) zoo has a collection of over 3,500 animals representing 750 species. The zoo's annual attendance exceeds 1,000,000. It also runs non-animal attractions, such as the 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge San Antonio Zoo Eagle train ride, which first opened in 1956 and utilizes three Chance Rides C.P. Huntington locomotives.
The Richard Friedrich Aquarium was opened in 1948.
What is now known as the San Antonio Zoo began in 1914 when Colonel George Washington Brackenridge, one of the city's leading citizens, placed bison, deer, monkeys, African lions, and bears on land he had deeded to the city. The land became Brackenridge Park and Golf Course.
The San Antonio Zoo opened two of the first cageless exhibits in the United States in November 1929 that offered visitors views of the animals not available in caged exhibits. The Richard Friedrich Aquarium was dedicated in 1948, and the Hixon Bird House, funded through the efforts of Colonel Frederick C. Hixon, opened in 1966. The zoo's bird collection is now one of the world's largest.
Antonio is a Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese first name of Latin origin. In the English language it is translated as Anthony, and has some female derivatives: Antonia, Antónia, Antonieta, Antonietta, and Antonella. It also has some male derivatives, such as Anthonio, Antò, Antonis, Antoñito, Antonino, Antonello, Tonio, Toño, Toñín, Tonino, Nantonio, Totò, Tó, Tony, Toni, Toninho, and Toñito.
The Portuguese equivalent is António (Portuguese orthography) or Antônio (Brazilian Portuguese). In old Portuguese the form Antão was also used, In Galician the form Antón. The Greek versions fxxxx general Marcus Antonius held that the origin of the name was Anthon, son of Hercules. This myth, recorded by Plutarch, was probably created by Marcus Antonius himself, in order to claim divine parentage. The name was in use throughout the Roman world which, at its height, comprised the whole of the Mediterranean and much of Europe as well as the Middle East. When the Roman Empire became Christian, the name continued in popularity because of the many great saints who bore the name. Later, the name was spread all around the world as Christianity was introduced to other places (e.g. the Far East, the Americas, and Sub-Saharan Africa).

The San Antonio Zoo Eagle (formerly known as the Brackenridge Eagle) is a miniature train that runs through Brackenridge Park just north of San Antonio, Texas. I've ridden this train more times then I can count during my life, and have always enjoyed it. I hope you enjoy it too.
Went fishing near downtown of San Antonio with my family. Caught a few fish there. Had a lot of the evil mosquitos so we had to go home real quick and change clothes.
This sport may have been founded in survival, but today (like all sports) it's about going out and having a good time. I'd rather be out catching tiny ones all day than not catching anything. At the Brackenridge Park in San Antonio, we also took the fun ride on a train called the "San Antonio Zoo Eagle Train". Tickets were $3 per person, though free for kids 3 and under. It was a somewhat scenic ride with good views of the Brakenridge park plus the First Tee of San Antonio golf course. The train also traverse through a short tunnel and a bridge. It was a pretty interesting and fun ride. We also have a video of our time at the Brackenridge Park- you can see that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btyuu3NuTPE

About 28 million people visit San Antonio each year to experience its Latin-style atmosphere. The main attractions are the famous Riverwalk and historically significant Alamo fortress, a symbol of proud defiance. The old town, with its winding paths and arched bridges, is best explored on foot. Watertaxis, vintage buses and trolleys also shuttle visitors around. San Antonio's constant buzz is best enjoyed in lively hubs such as La Villita and Market Square. Bands often play at riverside amphitheaters and restaurants. The dwellings in the Institute Of Texan Cultures provide a glimpse of early life in the Southw...

----NOTE: THIS VIDEO IS ONLY 4:19 MINS. LONG. It's the longer audioswap music that continues beyond the end of my video. ----The video contains images I recorded (Sat., 10/23/11) during my most recent visit to San Antonio's JAPANESE TEA GARDEN. The garden is located in the city's oldest municipal park BRACKENRIDGE PARK, which was officially opened in 1901. The tea garden was constructed within an abandoned stone quarry located inside the BRACKENRIDGE PARK property and wasn't opened until sometime in 1918. ----The JAPANESE TEA GARDEN has a very long, interesting history that also explains why the main entrance to the garden (which you'll see at the beginning of this video) says "Chinese Tea Garden." Many San Antonians commonly refer to this charming garden as the SUNKEN GARDEN becaus...
The Japanese Tea Gardens in San Antonio Texas. The location has an abundance of history and is located near Brackenridge Park, Sunken Gardens Theater and the City Zoo. http://japanesegardening.org/sunkengardens/index.html The old quarry was made into a garden and maintained by the Jingu Family. There is a comparison photo i did showing what it looked like in 1919 and then in 2010 shown on my site or the link below at CNN iReport. http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-428941 The landscape has changed dramatically, including overgrowth at the top of the quarry. You can see the city skyline is fully developed now. The old sky ride tower is gone, although the silo still remains hidden behind a large tree. The Lily Pads are few and far between, kind of sad that the huge ones are gone now. The o...

HISTORY In 1899, the San Antonio Water Works Company, through its president, George W. Brackenridge, donated 199 acres to the City of San Antonio for a public park. This tract comprises the largest portion of the park that today bears Brackenridge's name. After some improvements were made, the park officially opened to the public in 1901. At that time, there was still an operating rock quarry west of the park on City-owned property. The quarry had been leased by the City to stone cutters since the mid-1800s and in 1880, Alamo Portland and Roman Cement Company (later called Alamo Cement Company) began to use the quarry. When the company needed rail lines to expand production, it purchased a new site and closed its Brackenridge Park operation in 1908. Between the quarry and San Antonio Riv...
