Victory over Japan Day (also known as Victory in the Pacific Day, V-J Day, or V-P Day) is the day on which Japan surrendered in World War II, in effect ending the war. The term has been applied to both of the days on which the initial announcement of Japan's surrender was made – to the afternoon of August 15, 1945, in Japan, and, because of time zone differences, to August 14, 1945 (when it was announced in the United States and the rest of the Americas and Eastern Pacific Islands) – as well as to September 2, 1945, when the signing of the surrender document occurred, officially ending World War II.
August 15 is the official V-J Day for the UK, while the official U.S. commemoration is September 2. The name, V-J Day, had been selected by the Allies after they named V-E Day for the victory in Europe.
On September 2, 1945, a formal surrender ceremony was performed in Tokyo Bay, Japan, aboard the battleship USS Missouri. In Japan, August 15 usually is known as the "memorial day for the end of the war" (終戦記念日, Shūsen-kinenbi); the official name for the day, however, is "the day for mourning of war dead and praying for peace" (戦没者を追悼し平和を祈念する日, Senbotsusha o tsuitōshi heiwa o kinensuru hi). This official name was adopted in 1982 by an ordinance issued by the Japanese government.
Real colour footage of the celebrations at the end of World War Two, starting with VJ day in New York and then VE day in Britain and across europe. I thought these images were amazing, as we usually only get to see this period of history in black and white.
70 years ago this weekend, the Japanese government announced the unconditional surrender of its armed forces to the Allied Nations, bringing a formal end to the Second World War. As our country broke out in celebration, a single photograph was snapped which would ultimately define this historic event. Michelle Miller takes a look at the photo known simply as “The Kiss,” and introduces us to the famous sailor and nurse whose embrace has inspired the country for seven decades.
Mr Attlee broadcast at midnight the news that victory over Japan was complete. VJ Day coincided with the Royal Opening of Parliament and the King and Queen's drive to Westminster began the two days of celebrations. Crowds gathered outside Buckingham Palace waiting to cheer their sovereign and kept themselves entertained by singing. At night floodlighting and bonfires lit up the skies of London and the rejoicing continued. http://www.ve-day.be Universal Newsreel. May 1945. WWII is Over. Germany surrenders in Europe and later the Japanese surrender. From one end of the country to the other it was the greatest celebration the United States has ever seen.
The Royal British Legion asked several people to read out what happened leading up to Victory in Japan 70 years ago. They were shocked to find out the truth. This August marks the 70th anniversary of VJ Day, commemorating the moment when Japan surrendered and brought about the end of World War Two. While the war in Europe ended in early May 1945 it continued in the Far East. The Japanese finally surrendered on 14 August 1945 following the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Soviet declaration of war and invasion of Manchuria. As part this VJ Day anniversary, we’d like to recognise the sacrifices and pay tribute to all those who served in the Armed Forces, including those who served in the famous 14th Army in Burma, who helped secure victory. Prisoners of War and civ...
From Richard: My Dad (USN) shot this beautiful color Kodachrome 16mm film footage before, during and after VJ Day, August 14, 1945, in Hawaii. My Dad's rude introduction to WWII took place on the morning of December 7, 1941 when, eight minutes before enemy bombs rained down on Pearl Harbor, he was literally bombed out of his bunk at Oahu's Kaneohe Naval Air Station by Japanese fighter planes. Following the passing of my Mom and Dad I came into possession of this spectacular 1945 film footage of VJ Day celebrations in Honolulu. Coincidentally the global economy tanked the same year. My initial efforts at conserving the footage and the producing my intended documentary of VJ Day and its consequences, "The Bravest Generation" were impeded by the scarcity of funding. Efforts at winning finan...

August 14, 1945: Waikiki erupts in joyful celebration as the first news of the surrender of Japan comes over the radio. Shot by my dad, and presented here as a heartfelt tribute to his generation. It was exciting adding a unique element to my DJ sets but one of the biggest challenges I had was finding vj loops. Eventually I bought visuals from the Resolume store but really I wanted to create my own visuals. That's when I discovered After Effects and decided to start posting new visuals everyday as a personal challenge to learn the program. Every weekday I share a new visual designed for VJs as I learn how to use After Effects. Whether you're new to Resolume or an experienced user, you'll have fresh content to play with everyday.

Veterans of the Far East campaign in Word War 2 took part in the commemoration of VJ Day 2015, the 70th anniversary of the end of WW2. On 15th August 2015 the veterans paraded down Whitehall, past the War Memorial, and on down to Parliament Square.
On Friday, August 15 2014, in commemoration of the 69th anniversary of V-J Day, the day that the Japanese surrendered and WWII came to an end, Sandy Moss on her morning show The Morning Scramble on AZTV Channel 7 interviewed two WWII survivors, Edward Sowman, a Pearl Harbor survivor, and Guy Willis, who served in the Pacific at the end of the war to bring home the troops, and then re-enlisted to serve during the Korean War. I talked about my camp experiences in my book Rising from the Shadow of the Sun and my new Anthology Survivors of WWII in the Pacific with stories by both Ed and Guy, camp survivors and other veterans of the Pacific War.
