Centrope is an Interreg IIIA project to establish a multinational region in the Central Europe encompassing four European countries: Slovakia, Austria, Hungary and Czech Republic.

CENTROPE is a joint initiative of the Austrian Federal Provinces of Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland, the Czech Region of South Moravia, the Slovak Regions of Bratislava and Trnava, the Hungarian Counties of Győr-Moson-Sopron and Vas as well as the Cities of Bratislava, Brno, Eisenstadt, Győr, Sopron, St. Pölten, Szombathely and Trnava. On the basis of the Kittsee Declaration of 2003, they work jointly towards the creation of the Central European Region in this four-country quadrangle.

CENTROPE CAPACITY is the lead project funded under the EU programme CENTRAL EUROPE. In the period until 2012 it aims to create a multilateral, binding and sustainable framework for the cooperation of local and regional authorities, enterprises and public institutions in the Central European Region. Specific goals consist in creating of polycentric cooperation framework which should allow all the partners to work jointly and more effectively on the cross border issues. Project also offers them new tools for a balanced spatial development as well as integrated development strategy and action plan. CENTROPE CAPACITY builds on the results of two INTERREG IIIA projects concluded in 2007, which provided the necessary preparatory work and development steps to establish the Central European Region CENTROPE.

Roughly six and a half million people live in the eight federal provinces, regions and counties that make up the Central European Region. The position of the region at the intersection of four countries and four languages – the interface of the “new Europe” par excellence – is reflected in the great variety of CENTROPE partner regions and cities.

The two capitals Bratislava and Vienna, whose agglomerations – the “twin cities” – are situated at a distance of solely 60 kilometres from each other, Brno and Győr as additional cities of supra-regional importance as well as numerous other towns are the driving forces of an economically and culturally expanding European region. Growing prosperity, efficient and export-oriented industries, globally networked service hubs and a highly educated workforce are among the trademarks of the Central European Region. The Central European Region unites partners that ideally complement each other and – collectively even more than each of them on its own – stand for quality of life, opportunity, creativity, growth and openness.

Situated at a meeting-point of different language areas and attracting enterprises, people and ideas from all over the world, CENTROPE thus defines itself as a hub at the heart of Europe. For this reason, CENTROPE presents excellent prerequisites to become one of Europe’s most dynamic spaces to live and work in.

CENTROPE is growing together – for two decades already, increasing social, economic and cultural interdependencies are an everyday reality in this border region between the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Austria. It is only natural to transform this space into a prospering European region that makes effective use of the available economic and social assets as well as of its linguistic and cultural variety for the benefit of coordinated, dynamic development. In 2003, leading political decision-makers thus agreed to initiate and support the building of the Central European Region CENTROPE. Since then, 16 cities and regions in four countries have been committed to forging a common future.
