Conflict in Mali (Chronology of Events) [IGEO.TV]
To get this and many oter HD videos, please visit: tienda.igeo.tv The French warplanes pounded Islamist militant targets in Mali the 15 january, 2013 as international efforts to help the African nation's government fight insurgents gained momentum. Airstrikes hit in and around Diabaly -- a town in central Mali, about 400 kilometers (250 miles) north of the capital of Bamako -- it prompting men, women and children to flee or find cover. The battle for control of northern Mali appears to be drawing nearer to the capital, Bamako, as a growing alliance of international forces continued to attack Islamist strongholds. Seven individuals were kidnapped in Amenas , five of them Japanese nationals working for an engineering firm, JGC Corporation, as well as a French national. The kidnappers, with links to al-Qaeda, seized as many as forty foreigners including several Americans and 13 Norweigans, among others.

Operation Serval - France in Mali [IGEO.TV]
igeo.tv https www.facebook.com On Sunday January 13, French defense minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, confirmed the attack with four Rafale fighters, started from a French military base to the Malian city of Gao with intent to disable targets (fields training and logistics deposits) of Islamist militias in the city. According to eyewitnesses, there have been destroyed all the targets. This mission is part of the operation called Serval, started from Friday, January 11th, and where the French government wants to repel and diminish the presence of these militias Islamist in northern Mali, where they have done with three big cities of Mali. Until now, France has deployed 750 troops (550 troops already deployed in Bamako and Mopti), which together with the 600 with which Nigeria supports the operation and 500 in Burkina Faso, 500 from Togo and another 300 from Benin, 2650 troops added. To this we must add the military air power which France has, composed mainly by Rafale and Mirage fighters located between France and Chad, and two Boeing C-17 that the United Kingdom has provided for the transportation of equipment and personnel. Visite de Djenné / Visit of Djenne (Mali)
Djenné (also Dienné or Jenne) is a historically and commercially important small city in the Niger Inland Delta of central Mali. It is just west of the Bani River (the Niger River passes well to the west and north). It has an ethnically diverse population of about 12000 (in 1987). It is famous for its mud brick (adobe) architecture, most notably the Great Mosque of Djenné which was rebuilt in 1907. In the past, Djenné was a centre of trade and learning, and has been conquered a number of times since its founding. It is the oldest known city in sub-Saharan Africa, and its historic city center was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988. Administratively it is part of the Mopti Region. Djenné was founded in about 800 CE by the Bozo people at a site known as Jenné-Jeno, 1.5 km upstream. It moved its site in either 1043 or the 13th century, when the city converted to Islam. This increased its importance as a market and a base for trans-Saharan trade, soon rivalling Timbuktu. Djenné, despite its proximity, was never part of the Mali Empire. It existed as an independent city-state protected by walls and the geography of the inland delta. According to legend, the Mali Empire attempted to conquer the city 99 times before giving up. Djenné would not be conquered until 1473 by the Songhai Empire under Sonni Ali. The siege of Djenné is said to have lasted 7 months and 7 days culminating in the death of the city's king and its capitulation. The widow of the city married ...

UNESCO pledges to rebuild Mali's vandalised heritage
www.euronews.com The United Nations has promised to help rebuild Mali's cultural heritage destroyed by Islamist militants. As the rebels fled from French and Malian forces, they destroyed many of Timbuktu's legendary world heritage sites. In acts reminiscent of the Taliban in Afghanistan, Islamists had bulldozed mausoleums and burned some ancient manuscripts. Now, Lazare Eloundou, the head of UNESCO's Africa unit says work must be done to help Mali recover. "UNESCO will send a mission to assess the situation and define the immediate urgent priorities, in close cooperation with the local communities who have been maintaining this site for the past thousand years." Although, the vast majority of Timbuktu's ancient manuscripts have apparently been unharmed, many vital documents and books have been torched. Sane Chirfi, a former researcher at the Islamic Research Institute said: "There is geometry, medicine, history, geography, fairy tales.. And what's more secret than this are the sale certificates for slaves and the expropriation certificates." Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter twitter.com

Talk: Mali Intervention - A High-Risk Mission | Quadriga
France's military operations in Mali are receiving wide support from French President Francois Hollande's partners. European countries are worried Mali could become a terrorist state and destabilize the region. But there has also been criticism of a European intervention in Africa and some fear that it could turn into another Afghanistan. Is a western military intervention the right strategy to help Mali avoid becoming a failed state? Mali: French Troops Advance In Timbuktu Sky News is inside the Malian city as French forces advance - and insurgents burn vast numbers of ancient documents as they flee. 6:33pm UK, Monday 28 January 2013 French troops are inside the historic city of Timbuktu in Mali after advancing north into an area held by Islamist militants. As they fled, the insurgents apparently set fire to a library that is home to thousands of ancient manuscripts, an act described by the city's mayor as a "devastating blow" to world heritage.Sky's Special Correspondent Alex Crawford was the first journalist to enter Timbuktu as the French were heading into the city. She said: "In the centre of the town they are celebrating, they're going absolutely bonkers with flags, cheering and waving and saying thank you to the French."But amid the apparent relief among local people, she reported the anger of those who said they were helpless to stop the Islamists burning ancient documents at the city's main library, the Ahmed Baba Institute of Higher Islamic Studies and Research.Inside the building, which had reportedly been used as a sleeping quarters by the Islamists, Crawford said the empty boxes strewn around her had contained thousands of historic manuscripts. "Some of the documents date back to the 13th century," she said. "This was all the documentation they'd built up over ...
