The Rageh Omaar Report - The Right to Roam
Unwanted, marginalised, defiant - the Roma people have become the target of governments across Europe. In France and Italy they have been thrown out in their thousands - accused of illegally overstaying their welcome and blamed for increases in crime. They say that in their countries of origin they are victims of discrimination - a minority with few opportunities. They are now taking advantage of European Union laws that allow freedom of travel to all European citizens - looking West to find a better life, yet reluctant to adapt to Western ways. The Roma issue has now been forced on EU policy makers - they have to find a balance between the growing hostility and the rights of the Roma.

Dear fans of EXIT and the music of EXIT Label, we are happy to announce another musical story coming your way! As it usually happens with inspiration of life that is able to create, we are not missing out on an interesting story. So, an introductory, and according to the author, a nice story that really matters is about to follow... "The 8th of April, 2011. Day of the Romani people. A gathering with the youngest Romani people from the Novi Sad area was organized by my friends and colleagues from SKC Novi Sad. The concept was to animate them with my flying guitar, to sing child anthems together, have a lot of fun and drive the worries away for a day at least. That very day, Manu Chao, who was on the La Ventura tour, had a concert in Novi Sad. The organizers mentioned an event at SKC Fabrika to him, and to everybody's surprise, Manu wanted to attend the event personally, and give his greetings to our little buddies. To the excitement of everyone, we sang several songs together, among which was "La Vida es una Tombola" (or "Life is a Lottery"). Spontaneously, as many beautiful things in life happen, I sang the liberally translated lyrics -- a verse, a chorus, and he seemed to really like it. Unexpectedly, he liked the atmosphere, the interpretation, the energy, the idea of working with our little friends and the room's sincere reaction. Manu Chao as our friend for a whole day, and his team suggests that I appear at his concert and perform the "Lottery" from SKC Fabrika! So ...

This Country Was Not Mine/ Eihän tämä maa minun omani ollut part 3/4
The documentary "This Country Was Not Mine" (directed by Katariina Lillqvist) is a 60-minute movie about the history, culture and the modern day of the Finnish Roma people. The documentary's premiere is a part of Kino Kalderas, a two-day Roma Film Festival. The festival is held at the movie theater Kino in Helsinki. Both the festival and the movie are produced by the Film Cooperative Camera Cagliostro. The main character of the film is a singer Hilja Grönfors. Through Hilja's memories, songs, the everyday life and some archive material from the 60's, we see a past Finland filled with prejudice and oppression focused at the Roma people. Today the concept of a nomad Roma folk is history and the first generation of Roma people born in the cities is now middle aged. Still, the discrimination is very much alive in spite of the fact that there is a law forbidding it. On her journeys, Hilja comes across attitudes and stories that you wouldn't think were alive anymore in modern day Finland.

When impulsive dervish Zingarina (Asia Argento) arrives in the mysterious backwaters of Transylvania, she has but one thing on her mind to find her long-lost lover and travelling musician, Milan (Marco Castoldi, singer in Italian glam rock group Bluvertigo). After trawling the various clubs and bars with her friend Marie (Amira Casar, The Last Mistress), she eventually finds him, only for Milan to reject her. Totally distraught, Zingarina cuts herself loose from Marie, her belongings and everything she holds dear before stumbling into a series of events and encounters that threaten to send her spiralling over the edge of sanity. Plunged into the confetti, drunken revelry and thrumming festivities of a Romany carnival, she emerges in a daze only to be lured ever deeper into the rolling hills of the Romanian countryside. It is here that she meets the enigmatic Tchangalo (Birol Unel), a travelling trader who takes Zingarina under his wing. Together they embark on a chaotic road trip upon which they indulge in wild bouts of gypsy folk dance, cutthroat roadside bartering and long nights of heady passion.

I don't know about you but seeing as the weather in England has been a bit dismal I'm in the mood for some colourful makeup :) It's been brought to my attention that in America the word "Gypsy" is considered offensive, in England (note I said England NOT Europe) this term is not considered offensive at all. Example: In America the word "rubber" means a condom. In England it means an eraser, word meanings vary hugely from county to country hence the misunderstanding.
