In his first interview since November's presidential election, Mitt Romney compared the end of the 2012 campaign to the sensation of getting off a roller coaster. "We were on a roller coaster, exciting and thrilling, ups and downs," Romney told Fox News' Chris Wallace in an interview set to air on Fox News Sunday on March 3. "But the ride ends. And...

The spectre of wide-reaching budget cuts is looming in the US, unless Congress can agree on how to reduce the deficit. The cuts, dubbed the "sequester", are part of a debt deal that was made two years ago. If the cuts are not reversed, the military could face a nine percent across-the-board budget cut, about $55bn per year. As Al Jazeera's Rosiland Jordan reports from Washington, the Pentagon is leading the fight against the cuts.

www.euronews.com In keeping with his shy and modest ways, there was no public ceremony to mark the first papal resignation in six centuries. But his words and calls for solidarity have been widely and warmly welcomed as a source of encouragement for members of the world's largest church. French nun, sister Julianne Molyneux belives Benedict's presence will continue to be felt: "On the one hand it is sad because he is leaving but on the other hand it is not sad because he is leaving with great conviction. He feels in harmony and at ease with his decision, he is leaving with conviction because he is going to support the Church through prayer and reflection." Sentiments shared by other visitors to St Peters Square.. "It's very emotional, his departure is emotional with his act of humility and fantastic courage. Only a man of great spirituality like Benedict XVI could do it and naturally there is the emotion in waiting to see who his successor will be," said one Italian visitor. Pope Benedict has described his future life as being "hidden from the world" and while he will slip quietly from the world stage, it seems the man himself will not be forgotten. Judge Andrew Napolitano, saying on Fox Business Network earlier today that the Justice Department has "resisted in every forum" attempts to gain access to the legal opinions that the drone policy is based on. He said the government has persuaded judges that releasing the information could threaten national security. "Suddenly it shows up in an NBC newsroom earlier this week! It could only have come from a governmental source. So they really have made fools of the federal judges who've spent hours and days and weeks struggling over the laws involved here," said Napolitano, who called the document itself "breathtaking and chilling" because of the power it grants the government. "It says 'any informed high-level US government official can strip an American of his or her constitutional protections and order the killing of that American if the person is overseas, if it's difficult to arrest that person," said Napolitano, explaining that the memo does not clearly define what "imminent danger" to the United States means. "This is the power claimed by kings and tyrants. This is about as un-American a power as one could imagine," he said. A hot air balloon has crashed near the ancient Egyptian city of Luxor, killing at least 18 foreign tourists and critically injuring two Britons. Officials said the balloon, which was carrying 21 people and flying at 1000ft, caught fire and exploded during a trip at sunrise. The casualties are believed to include British, French and Japanese nationals as well as nine tourists from Hong Kong. The balloon was believed to have hit a mobile phone transmission tower near the banks of the Nile. Egypt's tourism industry has suffered a sharp downturn in visitor numbers since the 2011 uprising that toppled President Hosni Mubarak, with two years of political instability scaring off foreign tourists.

Palestinian youth clashed with Israeli forces on Sunday (February 24) after a detainee died in an Israeli jail. In the West Bank city of Hebron clashes erupted between Palestinians stone- throwers and Israeli soldiers who responded with dispersal means. At Ofer military camp on the outskirts of Ramallah, stone throwers clashed with Israeli troops who fired tear gas, rubber coated bullets and stun grenades to disperse the crowds. A spokeswoman for Israel's Prison Authority said that the detainee, 30-year-old Arafat Jaradat, had apparently died in Israeli jail on Saturday (February 23) of cardiac arrest. An emergency service team had tried to resuscitate him but failed, she said. Israel holds around 4700 Palestinians in its prisons on charges ranging from throwing stones to killing Israelis. Palestinians widely regard them as heroes of their national struggle against Israel and want them all freed.
