NAMPA: WHK- SWAPO Congress Swapo-Party President, 29 Nov 2012.mov
WINDHOEK, 29 NOV (NAMPA) - The much-anticipated fifth Swapo-Party congress kicked off in the capital on Thursday morning. Hundreds of Swapo-Party members and delegates gathered at a local hotel to witness the official opening of the four-day congress. Clad in the party colours of blue, red and green, delegates and invited guests were entertained with revolutionary and patriotic songs by the Ndilimani Cultural Troupe throughout the proceedings. About 600 delegates from the party's different wings, unions and political regions are attending the congress, which will elect the partys next vice-president, who will ultimately stand as the party's candidate in the 2014 presidential elections. President Hifikepunye Pohamba, who is also Swapo-Party President, is expected to pass on the torch to the candidate elected as vice-president in 2014. In the running for the post are Swapo-Party Secretary-General (SG) and Justice Minister Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana; incumbent Swapo-Party vice-president and Trade Minister Hage Geingob; and Swapo-Party information and mobilisation secretary and Minister of Regional and Local Government, Jerry Ekandjo. The congress will also elect the party's new SG and deputy SG. The delegates are tight-lipped on whom they are supporting, with the few Nampa spoke to saying they will vote as individuals. NAMPA: WHK- Vice President Swapo-Party 02 Dec 2012 1.mov
WINDHOEK, 02 DEC (NAMPA) Vice-President Hage Gotfried Geingob retained his position in the ruling Swapo Party after elections on Saturday. Geingob won with 312 votes, followed by Jerry Ekandjo with 220 votes and Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana with 64 votes. President Hifikepunye Pohamba also retained his position as Swapo-Party President after he stood unchallenged. The Secretary-General portfolio went to Nangolo Mbumba, who managed 352 votes against Utoni Nujoma's 244 votes. Mbumba is the Minister of Safety and Security, and was the Swapo-Party Vice Secretary-General before Saturday's election. Omaheke Regional Governor Laura McLeod Katjirua is now the only female in the top four structure of the party after scoring 300 votes, beating competitor Abraham Iyambo, the Minister of Education, who garnered 285 votes. Geingob, who was the first Prime Minister of an independent Namibia, is currently the Minister of Trade and Industry. Revolutionary songs and ululation erupted when prominent Namibian lawyer Sisa Namandje announced the elections' results at about 06h00 Sunday morning. About 596 delegates voted. (NAMPA) MMT/ND

NAMPA: WHK Swapo-Party Congress 30 Nov 2012 .mov
WINDHOEK, 29 NOV (NAMPA) ZANU-PF representative to the Swapo-Party congress Ambassador Simon Moyo says that party is ready to share its experiences on the challenges and successes of Zimbabwe's land reform programme with the Swapo-Party. More than 300 000 Zimbabwean families have benefited from the re-distribution of land which was formerly owned by 500 white farmers, the Zimbabwe African National Union - Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) representative said while delivering a solidarity message at the Swapo-Party Congress, which started on Thursday and ends Sunday. Our government faces criticism from erstwhile colonial masters, even to the extent of being slapped with economic sanctions, when we try to address the inequalities of the past in our countries, he said, adding that the need to redistribute land is a challenge for all southern African countries. Meanwhile, Moyo noted that the implementation of Zimbabwes Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Policy does not seek to disturb foreign confidence, but said it is a noble cause which seeks to give the indigenous people of Zimbabwe a voice in their economy. NAMPA: WHK Swapo-Party Congress (Nujoma) 30 Nov 2012 .mov
WINDHOEK, 29 NOV (NAMPA) Former President Sam Nujoma has cautioned delegates to the Swapo-Partys fifth congress to respect and accept the outcome of this weekends elections. Nujoma made this statement as the congress kicked off in the capital on Thursday. The congress, which ends on Sunday, will, amongst others, elect the partys new vice-president, who will ultimately stand as the party's candidate in the 2014 presidential elections. Nujoma called on the delegates to support the three candidates in the race for the position of vice-president. Nujoma further stated that the party is proud of the fact that Namibia enjoys political stability, and has maintained a track record of macro-economic and fiscal prudence, as well as a strong legal and regulatory framework which came as a result of its deliberate and far-sighted policies. Despite the achievements we have made over the years, our country still faces numerous challenges of poverty, disease and ignorance. Therefore, we need to diversify and industrialise our economy to create employment opportunities for all Namibians, he noted. (NAMPA) SH/AS/TK
