Gangotri glacier at Gaumukh
Trekkers and pilgrims converge at the source of the Ganges, at Gaumukh, the glacial source at the end of the Gangotri glacier. Here, everything is a mass of rubble, moraine, till, sand and rock! No, Himalayan riverine sources are not particularly pretty places... But there is beauty in the harshness of the terrain. The main source of the Ganges, Gaumukh, is at the mouth of the Gaumukh glacier where blocks of glacier ice fall into the river and pilgrims take a bath in freezing water to cleanse themselves of all the sins. Gaumukh is like paradise where one would find things in its purist form. One must visit Gaumukh for the panoramic view and lovely clean air. The holy glacier has much to offer than just its religious significance. Gangotri glacier and Gaumukh Trek
Glacial source of the Ganges. Gangotri glacier with glacial moraine, rubble and snout of the glacier. Ganga flowing through a rocky start. Gaumukh translates to a cow's mouth, the mythological source of the river. Originally, the river sprouts from the snout of the Gangotri glacier, which might have looked like a cow's mouth in the past. The glacier is at a distance of 9 kilometres from the famous Gangotri temple, dedicated to goddess Ganga. View near Gangotri Gaumukh glacier
See the rubble of the moraine, with the crevasses hidden under piles of sand, mud, soil and rock? This is a messy Himalayan glacier... The Gangotri glacier, at nearly 26 kilometers long, is one of the longest in the region. The Gangotri glacier is a traditional Hindu pilgrimage site. Devout Hindus consider bathing in the icy waters near Gangotri town to be a holy ritual, and many make the trek to Gomukh and Tapovan. Thisfootage is part of the professionally-shot stock footage archive of Wilderness Films India Ltd., the largest collection of imagery from South Asia. Gaumukh Temple - Mount Abu - Rajasthan
Gaumukh Nandi Temple - Mount Abu - Rajasthan Caution: The Gaumukh Temple is located around 5 kilometers from the Hanuman Temple situated in a wild valley that is reached by climbing down over 750 steps. The area is covered with very think forest cover and visiting the place after dark & rainy season is not recommended without proper information and local guidance, you should plan for a full day trip to Gaumukh if you want to enjoy the beauty and nature of this place. The cow is considered a sacred animal by those who make religious pilgrimages to the Gaumukh Temple and nearby the temple you will find a spring that is believed to have emerged from the mouth of a rock that is shaped similar to a cows head. A large marble statue of a cow has been built on the site. The bull is representative of Nandi, who was Shiva's vehicle. There is a stream of water that flows from the mouth of the marble bull.
