Hainan Airlines Company Limited (HNA) (SSE: 600221) (Chinese: 海南航空公司; pinyin: Hǎinán Hángkōnggōngsī) is an airline headquartered in Haikou, People's Republic of China. It is the largest privately owned air transport company and the fourth largest airline in terms of fleet size in the People's Republic of China. It operates scheduled domestic and international services on 500 routes from Hainan and nine locations on the mainland, as well as charter services. Its main base is Haikou Meilan International Airport,[1] with a hub at Beijing Capital International Airport and several focus cities.

Hainan Airlines was established in October 1989 as Hainan Province Airlines in Hainan, the largest special economy zone in China. It was then renamed as Hainan Airlines and became China's first joint-stock air-transport enterprise in January 1993 and began scheduled services on 2 May 1993.
[edit] Fleet expansion and purchased the airport
Executive-jet operations with a Bombardier Learjet 55 were added in April 1995. In 1998, Hainan Airlines became the first Chinese carrier to own shares in an airport after it purchased 25% stake of Haikou Meilan International Airport.
[edit] Establishment of holding company
In 2000, HNA Group (Hainan Airlines Group, S: 海南集团, T: 海南集團, P: Hǎinán Jítuán) was established which became parent company of Hainan Airlines. It also controlled Shanxi Airlines, Chang'an Airlines and China Xinhua Airlines.
By 2003 Hainan, the main airline, overtook Chang'an as the fourth largest airline in China.[2]
[edit] Merger of subsidiaries and Grand China Airlines Holding Company
On November 30, 2007, a new company called Grand China Airlines Holding Company (GCAHC) was formed under the initiative of the HNA group's largest operational entity, Hainan Airlines. The airline planned to merge its operations with all HNA Group's aviaition subsidiaries. The new holding company was held jointly by Hainan province government (48.6%), HNA group (32.8%) and George Soros (18.6%). As a result, a new airline called Grand China Air was founded. According to the plan, the former four airlines under HNA group, Hainan Airlines, Shanxi Airlines, Chang'an Airlines, and China Xinhua Airlines should be transferred into Grand China Air in the near future.
In addition, HNA Group also invests in other airlines, including Beijing Capital Airlines (70%), Lucky Air (67.95%), Zest Airways[3] (undisclosed but approximated to be at 40%), Africa World Airlines (42%), Tianjin Airlines (20%), Yangtze River Express (51%), Hong Kong Airlines (45%), Hong Kong Express Airways (45%) and Aigle Azur (49%).[1]

Hainan Airlines also plan to set up a Cargo division operating freighter aircraft in 2012 and invest in Turkish carrier ACT Airlines Cargo.[4]

Hainan Airlines and the HNA Group have their headquarters in the HNA Building (S: 海航大厦, T: 海航大廈, P: Hǎiháng Dàshà),[5][6] a.k.a. the New Haihang Building (S: 新海航大厦, T: 新海航大廈, P: Xīn Hǎiháng Dàshà), Haikou, Hainan, People's Republic of China.[7] It was previously headquartered in the HNA Development Building a.k.a. the Haihang Development Building (S: 海航发展大厦, T: 海航發展大廈, P: Hǎiháng Fāzhǎn Dàshà) along Hixiu Road in Haikou.[8][9][10]

Hainan Airlines has established seven airline bases in Beijing, Xi'an, Taiyuan, Urumqi, Guangzhou, Lanzhou, Dalian and Shenzhen, as well as an extensive network across the People's Republic of China, and connecting Asia, Europe, America and Africa. It serves nearly 500 domestic and international routes and flies to more than 90 cities.
Hainan operates international regular flights and offers charter flights to various destinations such as flights from Beijing to Almaty, Toronto, Berlin, Brussels, Zurich, Seattle, Novosibirsk, St. Petersburg, and Moscow; Beijing to Luanda (transfer in Dubai); Beijing, Xi'an, Dalian, Ningbo, Guangzhou, Haikou to Taipei; Urumqi to Astana; Sanya to Seoul; Beijing, Haikou, Hangzhou to Bangkok; Dalian via Hefei to Singapore and others.[11] Hainan also received approval from the US DOT to begin nonstop flights between Beijing and Chicago. The airline plans to begin service in the second quarter of 2013 with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. It will become the first Chinese carrier to offer flights between the two cities.[12]

- Hainan Airlines canceled 3 Airbus A330-200 orders. These aircraft were subsequently acquired by Garuda Indonesia.
- December 4, 2007, Hainan Airlines acquired three A340-600s previously leased to Cathay Pacific by ILFC.[19]
- November 14, 2007, Hainan Airlines received their first Airbus A330-200. Seven A330-200s had been ordered in July 2006.
- September 29, 2005, HNA Group announced an order for forty-two Boeing 787 Dreamliners. Hainan Airlines: 10 Boeing 787–8s, Hong Kong Airlines: 2 Boeing 787–8s and 30 Boeing 787–9s.
- January 2006, Hainan Airlines along with CASGC announced an order for 10 Boeing 737–800s. In September 2006, Hainan Airlines confirmed another order for 15 Boeing 737-800s.
- June 2007, Hainan Airlines announced an order for 13 Airbus A320-200 aircraft.
- Hainan Airlines announced an order to purchase 50 Embraer ERJ-145s and 50 Embraer 190s, with a total value of (at list price) $2.7 billion (US). ERJ-145 deliveries commenced in September 2007. The 50-seat ERJ-145s were produced by the Harbin Embraer Aircraft Industry (HEAI) joint venture, located in Harbin. E-190 deliveries began in December 2007. The 106-seat aircraft is configured for single-class service, and produced in São José dos Campos, Brazil. Due to the global financial crisis and huge losses incurred in 2008, the ERJ-145 order was reduced to 25. The E-190 order remained unchanged.
- Hainan Airlines plan to outfit a new cargo division with three Boeing 747-400F in 2012.
[edit] Fortune Wings Club
Hainan Airlines's frequent-flyer program is called Fortune Wings Club (simplified Chinese: 金鹏俱乐部; traditional Chinese: 金鵬俱樂部; pinyin: Jīn Péng Jùlèbù). The airlines's subsidiaries Hong Kong Airlines, Hong Kong Express Airways, Lucky Air, China West Air are also parts of the program. It is also possible for passengers to collect miles on the airlines which have codeshares with Hainan Airlines.[20] Members can earn miles on flights as well as through consumption with Hainan Airlines's credit card. When enough miles are collected, members can be upgraded to Elite members which are divided into two tiers: Fortune Wings Gold membership and Silver Card membership. Elite membership can enjoy extra privileged services.[21]

While operating one of China's largest commercial Airlines, Hainan Airlines also operates numerous subsidiaries in a variety of related and unrelated industries, including: 11 airports, 47 hotels and inns, 13 financial service providers, 5 marine transport firms and 2 retailers.[22] As June 2011, HNA Group have a subsidiaries with following :
