The Top 15 Cities That Wield a Global Economic Clout

Mumbai, one of India's prominent cities is beginning to meld its cultural vitality with economic clout. It is listed among the 15 cities which are known best for its economic clout around the world according to the Cities of Opportunity 2012 report released by PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Of the 27 cities which were considered for the list, Mumbai ranked at number 14. The ranking is based on variables such as number of global headquarters, financial and business service employment, attracting FDI in terms of Greenfield projects and capital investment, productivity and rate of real GDP growth.
1. Beijing
Amongst the most developed cities in China, Beijing tops the list when it comes to the world's best economic clout with a score of 125. The report stated that the city has nowhere to go but up, especially given that China has been focused on increasing productivity for many years. The city's automobile and real estate sectors have continued to boom in recent years.
2. Paris
The city which is considered to generate one of the highest GDPs in the world, Paris is at number 2 for its economic clout with a score of 120. While the city's economy is largely dominated by services, it remains an important manufacturing powerhouse of Europe, especially in industrial sectors such as automobiles, aeronautics, and electronics.
3. London
London, one of the leading global cities is at number three for its economic clout with a score of 119. London's largest industry is finance, and its financial exports make it a large contributor to the UK's balance of payments and tourism is considered to be one of the prime industries.
4. New York
One of the most popular cities in the United States, New York is ranked number four in terms of economic clout with a score of 119. The city is a global hub of international business and commerce. It is known as one of three command centers for the world economy.
5. Shanghai
Shanghai is a city with immense economic potential and with a score of 118; it is ranked at number five. The city is the commercial and financial center of mainland China. It is also one of the main industrial centers of China, playing a key role in the country's heavy industries.

As one of the world's leading international financial centers, Hong Kong is at number seven with a score of 99 for its economic clout among other advanced cities in the world. The city is a manufacturing centre driven by exports and acts as a leading center for management, financial, IT, business consultation and professional services.
8. Toronto
Toronto is ranked at number eight on the list of cities which are known for its economic clout with a score of 98. Toronto is the commercial capital of Canada and its leading economic sectors include finance, business services, telecommunications, aerospace, transportation, media, arts and publishing among others.
9. Moscow
With a score of 95, the capital city of Russia is ranked at number nine for its economic clout. It serves as a home for the country's largest banks and many of its largest companies. The city accounts for 17% of retail sales in Russia and for 13% of all construction activity in the country.
10. Tokyo
With a score of 92, Tokyo, the capital of Japan is ranked at number ten for its economic clout when compared to other cities in the world. The city is a major international finance center and houses the headquarters of several of the world's largest investment banks and insurance companies. It is also a hub for Japan's transportation, publishing and broadcasting industries.

The most popular city of Australia, Sydney is at number twelve for its economic clout with a score of 90. This financial and economic hub of Australia has grown to become a wealthy city. Business services, retail, manufacturing, health and community services are some of the important sectors of the economy.
