Durham is a city in north east England. It is within the County Durham local government district, and is the county town of the larger ceremonial county. It lies to the south of Newcastle upon Tyne, Chester-le-Street and Sunderland and to the north of Darlington. Durham is well known for its Norman cathedral and 11th-century castle, both designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. The castle has been the home of Durham University since 1832. HM Prison Durham is also located close to the city centre. This video mainly features a walk along the streets of Durham from the cathedral to the Railway Station. It begins at Durham Cathedral, including shots of both the interior and exterior, before showing views over durham from the Cathedral. Identified locations along the way include Durham Castle, Ovengate, Sadler Street, Elvet Bridge, the River Wear, the Market Place, Silver Street, Prebble Bridge, Milburngate Bridge, Framwelgate Waterside, views from the Radisson Blu Hotel, North Road, Neville Street, the railway viaduct, Station Approach, Durham Railway Station and finally views over Durham from the railway viaduct from a Southbound train.

Including 'flashbacks' to Bella Dents, Gordon Marshall butcher & the Outdoor Market just a small selection from many videos, which I recorded in 1991. The fashions may have changed but one thing that stands out to me is just how busy both the market & shopping precinct were back in 1991. Then the pessimists were already saying, that the market & town centre were finished, can any decline be reversed? The USA leads the way & the UK now follows, in the States Market Street is now empty but shopping malls flourish, let's hope that the same isn't true for the UK because whatever happens we can't go back. 'The Players Navy Cut' in part of the video was an original advertising poster that had been posted onto the ceiling of Bella Dents in the early 20th Century. The shop was an off license in King Street Spennymoor. The poster was approx. 8ft x 5ft & had a gas light suspended from the ceiling at the centre of it, Bella Dents ceased trading in circa 1994-95. I believe that Bella Dent died in the late 1970's; I can remember her standing outside of the shop or sweeping up but never serving me. She I suppose represented the last the of the Edwardian era in Spennymoor & this also included her dress It was very unusual in the 1970's to witness Bella wearing clothing from a bygone era. I visited the shop many times in my life & eventually purchasing some of the drawers from the shop when it was being converted into the Royal Balti. Beamish Villagers Debate the County Durham 'Category D' Classification
In 1951 Durham County Council published its County Development Plan. They wanted to bring a more rational approach to where people lived and worked and counteract the legacy of unplanned industrial building. The future of all the settlements in the County were assessed according to their predicted/proposed population change based on a variety of factors. Four categories of population were proposed: A (growth): population likely to increase by re-grouping or continuing natural increase B (static): population likely to remain at current level for many years C (subsequently dropped): population likely to decrease but stabilize below present level D (declining): population likely to decline considerably Not unsurprisingly, the Category D assessment was very unpopular with the residents of those villages given the category. At Beamish we worked with local communities and schools originally affected by this classification, and as part of February half term 2013 we've lots of activities on site relating to the Category D classification. The A167 flooded once again at 'The Honest Lawyer' causing traffic diversions & chaos. The River Wear was carrying alot of flood water and it was well above its normal level, further up the valley the River Gaunless was once again held back by the earth dam at Spring Gardens where water was slightly above 9.50 meters during my visit. I visited a horse drive on Sunday 26th of August 2012 ''Eddies Horse Fair' Horden, County Durham but arrived a day too soon for the drive but still plenty of action for me to film & hopefully I will get the correct day next year. The weather was excellent but the field was very heavy going due to the recent rain. Visitors had arrived from Ireland, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cumbria, Northumberland & much nearer County Durham for this ever growing event 'a miini Appleby Horse Fair'. As well as the horses in the drive many travellers had brought along many horses to deal, tack & carts were also for-sale.

Recycling In County Durham
Just to start: The guys working here, like a lot of guys working out on the streets in waste management are truly ace. They work long hours in all weather conditions and on the whole do a great job with limited resources. As per instructions from Durham County Council www.youtube.com myself and other residents place our recycling waste (paper, card, plastic, tins) into the bins with blue lids. General waste (foodstuffs, nappies etc) goes into the bins with the grey lids. Glass goes into green plastic boxes. The above video shows all waste being loaded into a single truck on our fortnightly general waste collection day. Right now it seems nothing is collected on our alternate fortnightly recycling day. I was so disappointed to see that in our street at least, all our hard work in cleaning and separating our recycling appears to be in vain. Of course I worry about the effect on the environment if all our waste goes into landfill. However in some ways it seems worst of all that I've been teaching my young son about recycling. "Good, that's paper. Well done, that goes in the green box for glass". It's hard to see it as anything less than a cruel joke. I really hope that in time the management of Durham County Council will be able to give the guys on the front line the resources and commitment they need to do the job they signed up for. It must be very difficult for them as it is. Incidentally, look at the state of our back lane. Billy Elliot eat your heart out! It's 2012 now ...
