Islamic conquest of Persia
Islamic conquest of Persia
Islamic conquest of Persia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Jq0damMgUU Since the 1st century BC, the Romans and Parthians had waged a number of wars that lasted for the centuries. In fact these military campaigns outlasted the empires themselves. Both the Roman and Parthian Empires reformed and were replaced by the Byzantine and Sassanid Empires, respectively. These two new superpowers continued their territorial disputes and military confrontations for centuries. But the Sassanids and Byzantines also had various proxy wars, in which they attempted to start rebellions in the opponents holdings. One example of this was the Byzantine client state the Ghassanids and the Sassanid client state the Lakhmids. These client states served as a buffer zone against the Southern Arab raiders. And both these client states, were Arab in origin, but the Ghassanids were Christian Arabs whereas the Lakhmids aimed to unite all the Arabs under one kingdom. In fact the last independent ruler of the Lakhmids, Imru' al-Qais, claimed the title of "King of all the Arabs." This vision of Arab unity would not be realized for centuries, until the rise of Islam and the consolidation of the Rashidun Caliphate, in 632. Once the caliphate was established the Lakhmids were quick to join their Arab brethren. But this made the Sassanids very anxious, as they had lost their bufferzone and client state. And so the Sassanid rulers decided to stirr up rebellions in the region. This provocation lead to the declaration of a Jihad against the Sassanid Persian Empire by Caliph Umar. At the time this seemed like an ant declaring war against a lion. And that is how the Persians mistakenly perceived it. Fresh violence in Iraq kills at least 31 people
At least 31 people have been killed in a fresh wave of violence, including bombings and gun attacks, across Iraq. Six people were killed on Thursday when car bombings rocked several cities in Babil province. A car bomb went off near a police checkpoint in the city of Samarra in Salaheddin province, killing three police officers and wounding two others. Several car bombings hit other cities in Salaheddin province as well as Wasit province, killing six people and wounding 15 others. Moreover, gunmen shot and killed six people including two civilians in Salaheddin. At least six people were killed after a series of bombings hit the capital Baghdad. In the northern city of Mosul, four people lost their lives in shootings. The attacks took to more than 600 the number of people killed in November across Iraq, according to reports. No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but al-Qaeda-linked militants often carry out the acts of terror. On October 23, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki warned that Iraq is facing a "war of genocide." "It has become clear... that Iraq is subjected to a war of genocide targeting all of its components," the Iraqi premier said. He blamed the al-Qaeda militant group for killing thousands of people in Iraq, saying that the group is "destroying the houses of citizens and killing them, and blowing up government departments." Data released by Iraq's ministries of Health, Interior and Defense on November 1 showed that violence in the Arab country killed 964 people and injured 1,600 others in October alone.- published: 29 Nov 2013
