Film made by Devin Graham.
This entire film was filmed on the island of Kauai over a 9 day period. The first 3 days were spent hiking the Napali coast, a 11 mile hike along the coast. We did this for 3 days. After this we spent 2 more days exploring the island. I did this with 8 other friends. After the 5 days were up with them, they all flew back to Oahu where everyone was living, and I stayed on the island on my own for 4 more days.
I had a rental truck, that's how I got around. I didn't want to spend money on hotels though, so I slept in the truck, in a Walmart parking lot for the other 4 nights. A lot of cars get broken in on the island of Kauai, according to rumors, so that's why I would camp in the parking lots, so I was a lot more exposed if someone tried to break in where I was sleeping :) That way i wouldn't get robbed, raped, or murdered, ha.
At night when I got done filming, I would go into the only Walmart on the island, where they also have a McDonald's, and I would bum off there wi-fi with my ipod touch, and plot my path for the next day, then I would head out before the break of dawn every morning, and I would get back after sunset to do it all over again.
On a technical side, this was all all shot on the Canon 5D Mark II. Most of the shots were done with the Canon 16-35mm 2.8 L Series lens.
The smooth shots were done with a Glidecam HD-4000. You can check out the exact model on their official website here where you can also buy them. I've been shooting with there glidecams for the last 5 years, and love them. They do take a little bit of a learning curve, but once you get past that, it's all smooth!

Also, here's a link to some of the photography I did as well while I was filming. I did this just on the side, just because I was already at the location, but my main focus was capturing it on video. Second was photographing it.

I've had around 30 emails within the first 12 hours of releasing this video, all with common questions, my response to them all was to big to put in here, so I posted it on my blog. For any other technical info, check out my blog below, and any other questions, feel free to ask there.

Kauai, Wailua Tunnels to Hanalei, "secret" Kaapoko tunnels.
July 2012. So its been awhile since I went on the tunnel hike from Wailua to Hanalei and some other guys on the green battalion wanted to check it out so we decided we would go in July because less chance of rain...WRONG! It rained pretty much the whole time. We got from our car to the fist tunnel in exactly 2 hours with one 10 min break. After we got through the first tunnel and got to the main river it was raging and could not be crossed safely. We probably could have found a place somewhere to cross but with the heavy rains it may have not been passable on the way back and spending the night out there didn't sound fun so we errored on the side of caution and aborted. I went on this hike over 10 years ago and remember more than i thought on how to get to tunnels. I thought the trail would be better and more used since then, but I think it was way worse. There were parts with trees and bushes so low I was crawling on hands and knees in the mud to get past them which was all good when you're happy going in. The trip back was a different story, it poured and the hike was miserable. If you've ever tried going downhill in deep mud crawling on your knees, its not fun. Ive been all the way to the end so I was ok with aborting but I was bummed the guys who have never been didnt get to see the waterfall at the end..... next time. Couple key notes. Good to have long sleeve shirt and pants, spiked tabis are the best, construction hat is good (im 6' 1") and would have konked my head several times, NO BACKPACK next time, that thing keep getting hung up on all the low bushes and trees. The engineering and labor that went into making these tunnels is amazing, Youre in the middle of nowhere with a tunnel drilled straight thru the mountain with tons of cement. I doubt they had helicopters to bring all this cement back here, probably mule and back breaking hand labor. With no gps or modern devices they put holes thru a mountain that are perfectly straight, hand tools and dynamite. Some of the cement walls are 8 feet high and a foot thick, I have no idea how they got that much cement out to the middle of nowhere. Also the 2 hour trail to the tunnel was lined with old ohia logs, how many hundreds of hours of back breaking work did that take? Inside the tunnel was old shoring and girders supporting the cement arches, amazing this was all done by hand back in the day, all for sugar.
note: 1) at one point the trail ends at a small stream and its hard to see but on the other side theres a metal cable about the diameter of your thumb on the hillside, head over to it and trail picks up to the right of it. 2)when you reach a river crossing that seems to end, look to the left, the trail can be picked up about 50 yards up in the grassy area. 3) In tunnel, at the end of the first straightaway theres a waterfall, look at waterfall but dont venture out, it seemed to go nowhere. 4) At the real end of first tunnel you will standing in a open flume, we went straight about 100 yards and picked up a faint trail to right which led to main river, there is also a openeing to the right just as you exit the tunnel, at the time there was a rope, this also leads to the main river but its harder.

Discovering more of Kauai's secrets with Danny Hashimoto, Hawaii
Danny Hashimoto - a son of Hawai'i (born and raised...of native Hawaiian blood, Japanese and Chinese extraction). Danny is extremely grateful to have grown up on Kaua'i (and still "growing") and appreciating the natural beauty and lushness of his Garden Island, Danny loves being outdoors...which includes the ocean, particularly snorkeling and swimming with dolphins, turtles and other amazing, beautiful creatures such as spotted eagle rays, etc., when the opportunity arises.
Danny's appreciation for his native land of Hawai'i and his culture became more pronounced after having lived abroad in several countries as well as Colorado which was enjoyable due to the wonderful snow skiing (a very avid "ski boarder"...and helped pioneer this great new sport on the ski slopes.)
Spending most of his time on Kaua'i, Danny is involved in a myriad of activities...from leading hiking tours (both easy and challenging - such as climbing waterfalls), to kayaking (ocean and river), even wild dolphin swims. Danny enjoys sharing his native land with both newcomers and locals... sharing his knowledge of history, culture, native plants, birds, and even the sacredness of certain sites/areas which he has been doing actively for the last four years.
Other activities include making delicious chocolate treats using raw cacao and healthy ingredients such as pure coconut milk and quality sweeteners with a low glycemic index, etc. Danny has been perfecting his art of making chocolate mousse and fudge over the past four years and has won a number of cooking contests in the dessert-making category.

12-23-09 update, cool, I've been trying to identify any of these big wave riders and just got the following email from Delphine Lamour the communications manager at Oxbow surf wear.
Hello Kalani,
In this video you have Oxbow team riders Laird Hamilton, Kai Lenny and Jason Polakow.
Amazing!
Kind regards,
Delphine LAMOUR
12-18-09 Thank you all for the amazing emails with your Maui memories and kind comments !, that's the stuff that warms my soul !
I love it if you "like" it, please share me if you love me.
Aloha all, just wanted to post a little footage from Jaws today...These waves are insanely huge and I have so much respect for the surfers that have the guts to do this as well as the jet ski operators that are tremendously talented in their own right, many of them big wave riders as well..
Anyhow, I live a couple of miles from Jaws on W.Kuiaha in a little town called Haiku. At night I can hear these monsters breaking, they sound like thunder...
Tech :
Canon 5D Mark II
Canon 70-300 USM @ 300mm
Zoom H4n & Redhead windscreen for faint ocean sounds

hope you all enjoy this little teaser.. there's more to come later, it's still going off !, and tomorrow is supposed to be huge as well.. Going to try to get the morning light..
One of the Jaws pioneers is Laird Hamilton. His wife Gabrielle Reece had this to say on his blog today..
"12-7-09 Swell Update from Laird
Gabby:

3:50 Hawaii Time
I just spoke to Laird around 3pm Hawaii time (5pm PST) from Maui. He said they had a good morning and that his board and body were feeling good. They went out fairly early, and it had not gotten too crowded yet. The boys (Dave Kalama, Terry Chun, Derrick Doerner and others) came in for gas fuel and food fuel for lunch. By then a front had come in and “chop sueyed” the waves. Laird then proceeded to watch some of the action from the cliff side. He said a lot of skis went up on to the rocks along with some boards. He felt like there may have been several new comers who were having to work it all out.
I’m on Kauai and Kings reef began to break ever so slightly. The ocean floor by this reef is so deep that you don’t even see Kings unless it’s starting to be Hawaiian 25 ft (that’s double in the front).
The boys are going to sit tight on Maui and then make their plan for tomorrow. As most of you know the swell hits Kauai first, then Oahu (which is having a bit of rain and some major water surging), Maui and so on. Once they get a beat on the conditions (wind, swell) they will most likely decide to continue to stay on Maui and surf Peah’i (aka Jaws) tomorrow. If I hear anything of interest I will let you all know."

Please copy/paste the following and share the Jaws love with your friends and family : )

Kauai sunset: Lumix GH1 slow motion
I was out taking a look around for some spots for filming tomorrow with the Letus Ultimate and EX3 when we saw that the sunset was going to be beautiful…so we pulled over. All I had on me was the little red GH1 and an SLR Gorillapod. So not ideal. But I set it up on the sand, got myself covered in sand and filmed this beautiful sunset. All in 1280×720 mode…50p slowed down to 25p in cinema tools. Tutorial on how to do that here: http://philipbloom.co.uk/tutorials/how-to-turn-50p-and-60p-into-slow-motion-with-cinema-tools/
Graded with Magic Bullet Looks and it held up just fine!
More details on my site including more info on the beautiful song and where you can buy it. It's from an old Twilight Zone episode!
