Indian Railways sight and sound spectacular
This video is a compilation of short pieces taken (with permission ) from the channels of four Indian Railway videographers. I find the Indian Railways fascinating to watch and enjoy the videos coming out of the country. It was that which prompted me to put this piece together for others to enjoy and perhaps share the amazing scenes that one sees there.
There's not too many places in the railway world that you can still hear the steady chug of an ALCO , a modern EMD or the whine of a big electric all in the same place. India has got the lot.
The work is compiled in no particular order of merit or favourites but simply as it was taken down from Youtube.
It has been "bordered" because it was a mix of standard definition at 480p and high definition at 720p. It was edited to fit together neatly and to retain as much quality as possible for rendering at HD 720p. Some small amounts of tweaking were done to enhance contrast and exposure but it is basically as shot. Considerable tweaking was done to provide stereo sound effects.
The work comes from the following Youtube channels :-

http://www.youtube.com/user/indianrailways
http://www.youtube.com/user/pramathsb

I thank the guys for letting me use their work to put this together.

Indian Railways Vs Pakistan Railways - A Comparison
It is said that all countries have armies but Pakistani Army has a country. While civilian politicians are favorite punchbags for Pakistanis to hit at for all the corruption in their country, the Pakistani Army's incompetence and counterproductive decisions go uncriticized.
Railways all over the world survive on freight traffic and use that revenue to subsidize passenger fares but in Pakistan freight traffic is routed to National Logistic Cell (NLC), an army controlled enterprise, and the Pakistan Railways is left to survive on passenger fares which is economically nonviable. On the top of it, military propaganda projects this as civilian incompetence. Decades of neglect has ruined this very important institution.

WAP7 Shoos Holy Cows Bamnia
WAG7 container freight blazes past Bamnia. WAP7 19019 Mumbai Dehradun express dances a bit, loops in for a halt, honks at the holy cows, flashes head lights. Sorry, had to stop the capture since I had to catch the same amazing 93 halt train. STFU birds, don't disturb my concentration.
No patience folks go to 0:43
WAG7 AGL 28182. Clean WAP7 GZB 30219. Thanks for the flash.
Bamnia 45 km from Ratlam, is in Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh. Known for big mandi / market place for nearby small villages.
Connects Mumbai and Dehradun, covering a distance of 1684 km in about 41.30 and only 93 halts. Belongs to Western Railway.

India's Longest Daily Train Kerala Express :)
Note - Longest running train on Indian Railways is Dibrugarh Kanyakumari Vivek express (4243 km) which is a weekly train. Kerala express runs daily - 3036 km.
It was 2 years back, April 27th my RF began accidentally with Kerala express and so I thought of paying a small tribute to the same train.
Karaoke courtesy - Adarsh Ranjith http://www.youtube.com/user/AdarshKaraoke
Earlier days used to run in green yellow livery as Kerala Karnataka express double headed. It had first class too. It had only 5 halts inside Kerala and did New Delhi Jhansi non stop. Stations like Kayankulam junction never existed !!!
Selected this music due to rhythmic train beats. Last train is not Kerala express.
Some already known facts -
- Longest running daily train.
- 100% occupancy all 365 days with passengers sleeping on floors during peak seasons
- Only daily train connecting North with Tirupati.
- Touches 9 Indian States including Rajasthan.
- Though always rattling, derailment free history at least until now.
Thanks to all my subscribers, friends and foes. Only 1 thing can stop me from giving you all train videos - death !!!

Indian Hill Railways 1/3 - The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (BBC)
From the Himalayas in the north to the Nilgiris in the south - for a hundred years these little trains have climbed through the clouds and into the wonderful world of Indian hill railways.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a line so close to the people that it flows like a river through their lives. The relationship between the train and the people is changing, however, as a new generation of Gurkhas populates these hills, demanding an independent state and fighting for a new identity as they journey into the modern Indian world.

India Train Ride (High Speed Movie) Indian Railways भारतीय रेल
This video showcases both normal and high speed footage from my train rides in India using Indian railways. I used my Casio EX-FC100 high speed digital point and shoot camera to capture both slow motion and high definition footage. The train rides included The following destinations: Old Delhi, Jaipur, Ajmer, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Amritsar, Agra, Varanasi, Kolkata.
This video highlights the beauty, diversity, poverty and bustling hive of activity that one can see outside of their train window. One will notice monkeys jumping out of trees, darting across tracks and running through farm fields. One will also see cows grazing in the fields, in garbage cans and nearby the tracks. Some of the scenery is particularly stunning with gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. The India railway stations are buzzing with activity as Indian tea men (Chai wallas) sell items, passengers hop on and off board the trains and vendors sell meals.
At times we passed through colourful slums, where life existed on the train tracks along with hectic train stations filled with passengers. One can notice action on board with passengers looking out the window, playing games and viewing the scenery from the exit doors. All of this footage captured in slow motion (high speed) was not registered with my naked eye. In other words, I noticed things from this video that I couldn't see while taking the train ride. It was quite fascinating what was revealed. Overall, it was an amazing experience and something I would love to do again. I recommend taking the trains in India to anyone wanting an authentic experience of domestic travel.
http://nomadicsamuel.com : Indian Railways (Hindi: भारतीय रेल Bhāratīya Rail), abbreviated as IR (Hindi: भा.रे.), is a departmental undertaking of Government of India, which owns and operates most of India's rail transport. It is overseen by the Ministry of Railways of the Government of India.
Indian Railways has 114,500 kilometres (71,147 mi).[3] of total track over a route of 65,000 kilometres (40,389 mi)[3] and 7,500 stations. It has the world's fourth largest railway network after those of the United States, Russia and China.[4] The railways carry over 30 million passengers and 2.8 million tons of freight daily.[3] [5] It is the world's second largest commercial or utility employer, by number of employees, with more than 1.36 million employees[3] As for rolling stock, IR owns over 240,000 (freight) wagons, 60,000 coaches and 9,000 locomotives.[3]
Railways were first introduced to India in 1853. By 1947, the year of India's independence, there were forty-two rail systems. In 1951 the systems were nationalised as one unit, the Indian Railways, becoming one of the largest networks in the world. IR operates both long distance and suburban rail systems on a multi-gauge network of broad, metre and narrow gauges. It also owns locomotive and coach production facilities.
Indian Railways is a department owned and controlled by the Government of India, via the Ministry of Railways. As of May 2011, the Railway Ministry is headed by Dinesh Trivedi, the Union Minister for Railways, and assisted by two ministers of State for Railways. Indian Railways is administered by the Railway Board, which has a chairman, five members and a financial commissioner.
With approximately 1.36 million employees, Indian Railways is the world's second largest employer. Indian Railways transports 30 million passengers daily[22] across twenty-eight states and two union territories. Sikkim and Meghalaya are the only states not connected by rail.[3] A standard passenger train consists of eighteen coaches, but popular trains can have 26 coaches or even more.
Coaches are designed to accommodate anywhere from 18 to 108 passengers, but during the holiday seasons and/or on busy routes, many more passengers may travel in unreserved coaches. Most regular trains have coaches connected through vestibules. However, 'unreserved coaches' are not connected with the rest of the train via any vestibule. High Speed Parallel Action on Indian Railways: NJP Shatabdi and Patna Jan Shatabdi Overtakes
Some high speed parallel action on the Bardhaman-Howrah section of Eastern Railways. Our 18628 Ranchi Howrah Intercity Express, powered by a Santragachhi WAP4 is placed on the extreme track (main down line) and proceeds slowly towards Howrah. Our first encounter is with a very pretty Howrah WDM3D, hauling the weekly Secunderabad Guwahati Express. A couple of minutes later, a Howrah WAP4 comes roaring through the reversible middle track with the 12024 Patna Howrah Jan Shatabdi Express. Our Santragachhi WAP4 also notches up at this point and there ensues a ferocious race between the Howrah and Santragachhi WAP4s, enjoyed wholeheartedly by the passengers on both trains (you can see the kids waving at 01:43) . We for a few seconds gain on the Jan Shatabdi before the Howrah WAP4 shows its class and accelerates further to breeze ahead and leave us in the lurch. 10-12 minutes later, the six day old 12042 New Jalpaiguri Howrah Shatabdi Express nonchalantly overtakes us through the reversible track with a Siliguri WDP4, after a two short honks. Our LP probably threw in the towel after his race with the Howrah WAP4 and there was not much of a contest here...This however is a really rare instance of a diesel-hauled train overtaking an electric powered train (that too WAP4) on IR.
It is worth mentioning here that there was an EMU bang ahead of us, which had been switched from the reversible track to our track a little before these two trains whizzed past. If that train had not impeded our progress, the race with the Jan Shatabdi could have been a little longer as both trains had an MPS of 110 kmph, and were WAP4 hauled!
My good friend and fellow Kolkata Railfan Anindya Roy accompanied me on this trip and can be seen at the adjacent door. You can get a partial glimpse of the videographer in action between 01:35 and 01:43, on the windows of the Jan Shatabdi's AC Chair Car, courtesy the laws of reflection!

Indian Railways: WAP4 vs WAP7, Which Locomotive is Better?
One of the most stirring debates in Indian Railways for the past decade is based on the performance of the WAP4 class of locomotives in comparison to the newer three-phase WAP5 and WAP7 locomotives. Voices in support of three-phase locomotives point to their faster acceleration capabilities courtesy the higher horsepower ratings - 6,000 HP and 6,350 HP for WAP5s and WAP7s, compared to 5,350 HP for WAP4s. Proponents of WAP4s point out that despite the advent of WAP5s and WAP7s as regular locomotive links for a multitude of trains, including Rajdhanis, Shatabdis, travel times for these trains have not significantly reduced.
Through two videos documenting a natural experiment, I have attempted to observe and contrast the acceleration of a WAP7 and WAP4 in real-life and discern any significant difference between them. The key feature of natural experiments is that all other factors which might affect the variable of interest, in this case, acceleration capability, are held constant. In this light, this compilation presents the acceleration of the Howrah Rajdhani Express, powered by a Ghaziabad WAP7, and the Poorva Express, powered by a Mughal Sarai WAP4, upon departure from the station of Parasnath, Jharkhand. Both videos capture approximately the first five kilometres covered by both trains after exiting Parasnath.
Parasnath is a small station and the trains halt on the platform on the main line and thereby, there are no barriers to acceleration like a number of points or switching of tracks. In the absence of any additional speed restrictions imposed by railway authorities, trains have the license to accelerate to their maximum permissible speeds (MPS) at their earliest upon departure from the station. Both the Rajdhani and the Poorva have no halt after Parasnath till Dhanbad so we would expect them to have a comparable performance in terms of acceleration. In this respect, if we assume away certain differences (listed below), this is as close to a natural experiment as we in our roles can passengers can enact. An improvement on this would probably involve the racing of two identical trains side-by-side on the same day with the two different locomotives.
The differences which could affect the observed evidence in the video are:
1. The videos were captured within three months of each other. Thus, there could be some minor speed restrictions imposed on either trains, affecting their acceleration, though I do not believe that was the case, given how both trains took-off!
2. The Poorva Express is a 24 coach rake, as opposed to the 19 coach Rajdhani so there is a slightly heavier load for the WAP4 hauling the Poorva.
3. The Rajdhani is a fully air-conditioned rake whereas only 6 of the 24 coaches of the Poorva is air-conditioned. The drag effect on the Poorva is therefore much higher, which would reduce its acceleration capabilities.
4. The Rajdhani was over 3 hours and 20 minutes delayed so there was theoretically a higher incentive for the Rajdhani to accelerate quicker and make up some time. This and the above factors add a small bias against the Poorva and in favour of the Rajdhani.
5. I was in the first coach of the Rajdhani and the 18th coach in the Poorva.
6. There is a 20 second lag in the Rajdhani departing, from when I start videoing. For the Poorva, I started videographing around 20-30 seconds after the train departed.
The results I must say surprised me (though pleasantly). The WAP4 displayed an absolutely stunning performance. There is pretty much no difference in performance of both these trains for the first two minutes (around 3 km) and there is a slight difference in favour of the Rajdhani after that. T
The WAP4 hauled Poorva notches up to 80 kmph in about 2 minutes and 25 seconds, 100 kmph in around 3 minutes and 110 kmph in around 3 minutes and 30 seconds. The WAP7 powered Rajdhani on the other hand hits 120 kmph in 3 minutes and 10 seconds and 130 kmph in 3 minutes and 30 seconds. Towards the end of the video, we cross an abandoned block hut and the Poorva takes approximately 15 seconds more to get there, which can possibly be explained by the higher speeds attained by the Rajdhani for at least 20 seconds. However, we also need to bear in mind factors 2 and 3 -- the slightly higher load of the Poorva and the drag it faces due to a higher number of non-airconditioned coaches. Taking these factors into consideration, there is actually very little difference between the performances of two locomotives.
Of course it is unscientific to make any strong conclusions on the basis of a single pair of observations but given the evidence of the two videos, we can at least commend both the WAP4 locomotive, and its loco-pilots, for a superb performance, where they almost matched a WAP7 hauled Rajdhani with a higher speed permit, blow for blow!

Indian Railways Future 2030-Original Background Sounds
The railway ministry should focus on developing a vision for 2030 and start executing it NOW ! Its getting late. All the trains are over crowed, there is shortage of tracks and frieghts are suffering as well. We haven't grown the tracks much post independence. Aviation will always be expensive and people cant afford to spend 24 hrs on train journeys. What is required urgently is fast trains and dedicated corridors and even Melgev like trains for twin cities.
The crucial files keep lying unattended at ministers' office for months- there is no vision, no strategy- and the need for more tracks, freight capacity and fast trains is now becoming CRITICAL!. Somebody please wake up these guys, the wait for tickets is getting unbearable and economy is suffering as for want of better railway infrastructure.
