Lohardaga district (Hindi: लोहरदग्गा जिला) is one of the twenty-four districts of the Indian state of Jharkand. The district is named after the town of Lohardaga, the administrative headquarters of the district. The district was created from a portion of Ranchi district in 1983.

The district is situated between 23°30' and 23°40' north latitudes and 84°40' and 84°50' east longitudes. The district covers an area of 1491 km².

As of 2011 it is the least populous district of Jharkhand (out of 24).

It is currently a part of the Red Corridor.

The inhabitants of this district mainly depend on agriculture, forest produce and seasonal migration to different parts of the country. 80% of the population depends upon agriculture. The main crop of this area is paddy. In the small irrigated area wheat is grown to meet the annual food sufficiency. Also this district is linked with larger vegetable markets like Jamshedpur, Rourkela and Calcutta. There is a cold storage in the district. But profitable vegetable cultivation is being limited to road side non-tribals. Generally, villagers of the district keep plough animals. Also they keep goats and poultry birds as buffer. Although there is a dairy chilling plant in the district head quarter, dairy is practised by very few people mainly non-tribal.

Lohardaga (Hindi: लोहरदग्गा) is a town and the district headquarters of Lohardaga district in the Indian state of Jharkhand, west of Ranchi, the state capital. Earlier (early 1900s) Lohardaga was the commissionary headquarters for Chotanagpur. (See:[1]) It was only later that the commissionary of Chotanagpur was shifted to Ranchi. The commissioner's office still exists and it houses the Lohardaga Municipality office.

Lohardaga is located at 23°26′N 84°41′E / 23.43°N 84.68°E / 23.43; 84.68. It has an average elevation of 647 metres (2122 feet).

As of 2001^[update] India census, Lohardaga had a population of 46,204. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Lohardaga has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 66%. In Lohardaga, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The Deputy Commissioner is the head of the district administration and is ex-officio chairman of various societies, agencies that are involved in the development of the district. Various societies and the Governmental agencies which are in the direct control of the Deputy Commissioner are DRDA, MESO, Central Sponsored Social Sector Schemes, Welfare Schemes, Total Literacy Mission and Sarva Siksha Abhiyan and Various Societies constituted for Health Services. Among NGOs PRADAN(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PRADAN) and LGSS are active in the District. PRADAN works with over 8,000 families around issus of micro-irrigation, decentralised poultry, dairy, commercial agriculture, etc. and has been active in this district since 1992

Jairam Ramesh born April 9, 1954, is an Indian economist and an influential politician of the Congress Party in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) ruling coalition of center-left political parties heading the Government of India. He is a Member of Parliament representing Andhra Pradesh state in the Rajya Sabha since June, 2004. In July, 2011, Mr. Ramesh was elevated to the Union Council of Ministers of India and appointed Minister of Rural Development and Minister (Additional Charge) of the new Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation. He was previously the Indian Minister of State (Independent Charge) at the Ministry of Environment and Forests from May 2009 to July 2011.

Jairam was born on April 9, 1954 in Chikmagalur, Karnataka. His father is the late Shri C.K. Ramesh. His mother is Shrimati Sridevi Ramesh. Jairam is an Iyengar Brahmin. His mother tongue is Tamil. He considers himself a practising Hindu with Buddhism ingrained and calls himself a 'Hind-Budh' He married K. R. Jayashree, an Iyer Brahmin, on January 26, 1981. He and his wife currently reside at Lodi Gardens, Rajesh Pilot Marg, in New Delhi. Their permanent residence is at Khairatabad, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh.
