http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airavatesvara_Temple
The Airavatesvara temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Shiva is here known as Airavateshvara, because he was worshipped at this temple by Airavata, the white elephant of the king of the gods, Indra. Legend has it that Airavata, while suffering from a change of colour curse from Sage Durvasa, had its colours restored by bathing in the sacred waters of this temple. This legend is commemorated by an image of Airavata with Indra seated in an inner shrine. The temple and the presiding deity derive its name from this incident.
It is said that the King of Death, Yama also worshipped Shiva here. Tradition has it Yama, who was suffering under a Rishi's curse from a burning sensation all over the body, was cured by the presiding deity Airavatesvarar. Yama took bath in the sacred tank and got rid of the burning sensation. Since then the tank has been known as Yamateertham.
Deities
The main deity's consort Periya Nayaki Amman temple is a detached temple situated to the north of the Airavateshvarar temple. This might have been a part of the main temple when the outer courts were complete. At present, it stands alone as a detached temple with the shrine of the Goddess standing in a single large court.
This temple is a storehouse of art and architecture and has some exquisite stone carvings. Although this temple is much smaller than the Brihadeesvara Temple or the Gangaikondacholapuram Temple, it is more exquisite in detail. This is because this temple is said to have been built with nitya-vinoda, "perpetual entertainment", in mind.
The vimana (tower) is 24 m (80 ft) high. The south side of the front mandapam is in the form of a huge chariot with large stone wheels drawn by horses.
The pedestal has a set of 3 finely carved set of steps on the south side. Striking the steps produce different musical sounds.
In the south-west corner of the court is a mandapam having 4 shrines. One of these has an image of Yama. Adjoining this shrine are large stone slabs sculptured with images of the sapthamathas (seven celestial nymphs).

Nedumkotta A fortification with red soil
Nedumkotta is a fortification in red soil measuring more than 50 kilometers constructed across Kerala in the Territory of Cochin and Controlled by Travancore. The Structure was started construction in 1757, but a formal agreement was executed between Dharmaraja of Travancore and Rama Varma VII of Cochin. The purpose of the fortification was to prevent the military attacks of Zamorins of Calicut. The Zamorins could not penetrate Nedumkotta any more. It started from Puthumala Vattakotta of Anamalai Hills and ended practically at Krishnankotta. Crossing the River at Krishnankotta, it had an extension to the Crangannore Fort at Kottappuram where the forts of the Portuguese and the Dutch had existed. A few kilometers away from there the famous Portuguese hexagonal construction Pallippuram Fort is situated.
Tippu Sultan had attached Nedumkotta in 1789 and conquered Nit in 1790. If there was no resistance of Nedumkotta Tippu would have bagged entire Kerala under his Muslim rule.
This documentary reveals whatever remnants of Nedumkotta are available on the 222nd anniversary of the Conquest of Nedumkotta by Tippu. This is an attempt to reveal the local histories of many villages also. We plan to document the remnants of Nedumkotta in ten documentaries of which this is the first and general part.

View of Palani hills
The Palani Hills are a mountain range in Tamil Nadu state of South India. The Palani Hills are an eastward extension of the Western Ghats ranges, which run parallel to the west coast of India. The Palani Hills adjoin the high Anamalai range on the west, and extend east into the plains of Tamil Nadu, covering an area of 2,068 square kilometres (798 sq mi). The highest part of the range is in the southwest, and reaches 1,800-2,500 metres (5,906-8,202 feet) elevation; the eastern extension of the range is made up of hills 1,000-1,500 m (3,281-4,921 ft) high.
It is also home to one of the shrines of Lord Karthikeyan or Murugan, who is worshipped as a god in Tamil Nadu.
The range lies between the Cumbum Valley on the south, which is drained by the Vaigai River and its upper tributaries, and the Kongunadu region to the north. The northern slopes are drained by the Shanmukha River, Nanganji River, and Kodavanar River, which are tributaries of the Kaveri River. The range lies mostly within Dindigul district, except in the western portion, where it forms the boundary between Dindigul district and Theni district to the south. The hill station of Kodaikanal lies in the southern central portion of the range.
