Garhwali Language Seeks Patronage
The Garhwali language of India's Uttarakhand state is in desperate need of preservation. Luxmi, like most children in the hilly Garhwal division of Uttarakhand, learnt how to speak Garhwali first, before Hindi. However, UNESCO's Atlas of World Languages in Danger lists Garhwali as one of them, classifying it as 'vulnerable'. Most children speak the language, but it might be restricted to certain domains, for instance the home. "I want to show people this language so that they know it exists and so they can know a little more about my culture. I am proud to be a Garhwali speaker, but the younger people have begun speaking Hindi more and more in the markets and schools. If a group of college students are standing around speaking Hindi, you will also speak it. You won't talk in Garhwali -- it's not fashionable," Luxmi told us. The state of Uttarakhand was carved out of Uttar Pradesh in 2000 and its interim name was Uttaranchal. But the people insisted that their state should have a Garhwali name, so it is now known as Uttarakhand, 'uttara' meaning north, and 'khand' meaning country or part of country. For years the people of this Himalayan region have felt neglected by the central government and underrepresented in the rest of the country. So they actively promote their language through forums such as the 'Garhwali Language Conventions' held annually, where there are folk dance and song performances, speeches and discussions on how to preserve the language. "We enjoy local movies and music, because we feel this is the way to keep our culture going. We can see our own actors, speaking in our own language, and walking around places in Uttarakhand -- the connection is strong, especially for those who live outside India. But the youth -- they watch a lot of Hindi television programs and this comes out in their conversation," said Luxmi. Garhwali originated from Sauraseni Prakrit, which is also the source of other Northern Indian languages such as Rajasthani. It is influenced by Sanksrit and uses the Devnagri script, but sounds dissimilar to Hindi. "If we spoke Garhwali in front of a Hindi speaker, they wouldn't understand much," Luxmi said. Uttarakhand is the site of many Hindu temples and pilgrimage sites, and it is believed that the vedas andshastras (Hindu scriptures) were written there. With such a rich cultural and religious heritage ensconced in the language, Luxmi feels saddened that Garhwali is becoming unfashionable amongst people her age.

AUGUST 20-Swargarohini -SATOPANTH SAROVAR.CHAKRA TEERTH - Uttarkashi District -PART 1.
Swargarohini is a mountain massif in the Bandarpunch Range of the Garhwal Himalaya. It lies in the Uttarkashi District of the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, west of the Gangotri group of peaks. It comprises four separate peaks; Swargarohini I is the main peak, and is the subject of this article. While not particularly high by Himalayan standards, and not the highest in the Bandarpunch range, Swargarohini I is notable for its dramatic local relief. For example, its north face drops 2,000 metres (6,560 ft) in less than 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) of horizontal distance, and its south face achieves the same drop in less than 3 kilometres (1.9 mi). This makes it a steep and challenging climb. Swargarohini I has two summits, east and west. The east summit is given an elevation of 6,247 m (20,495 ft), slightly lower than the west summit. However the first ascensionists of the west summit claim that that summit is the higher of the two.
This snow-clad peak along is the source of the Tons River and along with the Bandarpunch massif it acts as a divider between the Yamuna and the Bhagirathi Rivers.
Swargorhini derives it names from the Legends associated with that it peaks forms the path to heaven that was followed by Pandavas, Draupadi & their Dog.According to Legends its believed that is only way one can go to heaven with human body itself.

Bandarpunch (or Bandarpoonch) is a major peak of the Garhwal division of the Himalayas, in the Indian state of Uttaranchal. It literally means "Tail of the monkey" or "Tail of Hanuman" in Hindi. It's a twin peak: Bandarpunch-I (6316m) & Bandarpunch-II (also known as white peak)(6102m). There is another peak called Kalanag (6387 m) or Black Peak.
Yamunotri, the source of the river Yamuna, is the western most shrine in the Garhwal Himalayas, located on a flank of the Bandarpunch peak .Bandarpunch Glacier is about 12 km long. The Bandarpoonch glacier feeds water to the Yamuna (Feeds Tons river largest tributary of Yamuna) as well as the Ganga,a uniqueness among other glaciers.
The first successful expedition launched in 1950 to Bandarpunch was led by Maj Gen Williams.

Nepal
Under the Sugauli Treaty, the Nepalese kingdom had ceded the territories conquered by the British East India Company that spanned from the Teesta River in the east, which are constituted in the modern Indian states of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and West Bengal and Uttarakhand and including places such as Almora, Pathankot, Kumaon, Dehradun, Garhwal, Sirmur and Shimla and Kangra, located to the west of the Sutlej River in the modern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.
Nepal also ceded control over kingdom of Sikkim, whose local ruler, the Chogyal, had supported the British in the war, as well as the north of the Rajshahi division of Bangladesh.
The re-acquisition of these territories is a goal held by several Nepali political groups, especially the parts of then Nepal integrated into India only because of the consequence of the Sugauli treaty concluded between British India and the Nepalese government.
