This is the playground of the Centro Adventista school I volunteered at (I use the term loosely) in Fall 2006 Malabo. I was living in Malabo as a student studying abroad as part of the Bioko Biodiversity Protection Project. www.bioko.org. As part of our program, groups of us made weekly visits to classrooms at Centro Adventista to build a relationship between that class and a class of the same grade in a school in Philadelphia. To quote a summary I wrote at the end of the experience, Arcadia students visited their class weekly, sometimes bringing gifts of school supplies from the United States. The foremost goal was to facilitate a correspondence between the Equato-guinean students and students in the United States. In the first few meetings with classes, Arcadia students explained this to the Adventista classes and collected letters and questions from the Equato-guinean students, which they translated at home and e-mailed to the United States. Unfortunately, this process was not as efficient as it could/should have been. Many students did not receive e-mail responses from the teachers they had been partnered with in Philadelphia. Others did receive answers, but only after several attempts over an extended period of time. Others contacted former professors or friends/relatives working in schools in the United States and set up new connections with a different American school.
