Scientists in Greece are warning that one of its most important wetlands could be irreparably damaged if Bulgaria is allowed to dam a river shared by the two countries. Under a treaty between Athens and Sofia, Greece is only entitled to extract 29 percent of water from what it calls the River Nestos, but in fact takes 75 percent. Bulgaria says it needs to dam what it calls the River Mesta to improve irrigation to its farmers who are struggling to be competitive before joining the European Union in 2007.
