Leni Stern

Leni Stern (born Magdalena Thora in Munich, Germany) is an electric guitarist, singer, and ngoni player. She was interested in music from an early age, beginning piano studies at the age of six and taking on the guitar age of eleven. Forming her own acting company at the age of seventeen, Stern attracted media attention and performed her radical productions in front of sold-out European crowds.

In 1977, Stern chose music over acting, and left Germany for the United States to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston, studying film scoring. She gave up film scoring in favor of the guitar and moved to New York City in 1981, playing in various rock and jazz bands. In 1983, she formed a band of her own with Paul Motian on drums and Bill Frisell on guitar. She has been awarded the Gibson Guitar Female Jazz Guitarist of the Year five consecutive times.

She has released fifteen solo recordings, the latest being 2013's "Jelell" recorded in Dakar, Senegal. The 1985 Clairvoyant was the first. Her most recent releases juxtapose Stern's trademark inventive guitar and vocal explorations with the indigenous sounds of accomplished West African instrumentalists and singers. She has worked with Bassekou Kouyate and Ami Sacko, Salif Keita, Toumani Diabate, Baaba Maal and many other master musicians. She is featured in the full-length documentary "Last Song Before the War" about the Festival in the Desert in Timbuktu, Mali.

Leni

Leni is a comune (municipality) and one of the main towns on Salina, one of the Aeolian Islands. It is situated in the Province of Messina in the Italian region Sicily, located about 140 kilometres (87 mi) northeast of Palermo and about 70 kilometres (43 mi) northwest of Messina. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 654 and an area of 8.6 square kilometres (3.3 sq mi).

Leni lies on the slope of the hill on the south of the island, 200 metres (660 ft) above the sea, between the volcanoes of Monte Fossa and Monte dei Porri.

The municipality of Leni contains the frazioni (subdivisions, mainly villages and hamlets) Rinella, at the coast to the south, and Valdichiesa, in the centre of the island, to the north of Leni.

Leni borders the following municipalities: Malfa, Santa Marina Salina.

To the Light

To the Light is an album by Irish folk singer Johnny Duhan.

To the Light charts Duhan's years on the road with bands in the sixties and seventies, tilting for fame and the girl. Its tone and rhythm come from the radios, jukeboxes, cafes, bars, dance-halls and nightclubs of the time it sings of. It is not a success story; numerous failures and heartaches are encountered on the road. One of a score of managers who quit working with Duhan out of a sense of frustration (Terry O’Neill) told Duhan that he was the only person he'd encountered in a long career in the music business with “a will to fail”. Duhan doesn't believe that this is quite true, but his uncompromising attitude to his work down the years has no doubt contributed to keeping marketplace success from his door. Though Duhan never quite makes “the big time” he eventually finds the girl and experience a moment of transcendence - illustrated in the song "To the Light" - that convinces him of the truth of a newspaper quotation that he once jotted into his song journal: “We Irish are suspicious of success knowing that there is a lot more of the infinite in its opposite.”

Mike Stern

Mike Stern (born January 10, 1953) is a six-time Grammy nominee American jazz guitarist. After playing for a few years with Blood, Sweat & Tears, he landed a gig with drummer Billy Cobham and then broke through with trumpeter Miles Davis' band from 1981 to 1983, and again in 1985. Following that he launched a solo career, releasing more than a dozen albums.

Stern was hailed as the Best Jazz Guitarist of 1993 by Guitar Player magazine. At the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal in June 2007, Stern was honored with the Miles Davis Award, which was created to recognize internationally acclaimed jazz artists whose body of work has contributed significantly to the renewal of the genre. In 2009 Stern was listed on Down Beat's list of 75 best jazz guitar players of all time. He was presented with Guitar Player magazine's Certified Legend Award on January 21, 2012.

Personal life

Stern was born Michael Sedgwick in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Helen (Burroughs) and Henry Dwight Sedgwick V. "Stern" is the surname of his stepfather. He is the half-brother of actress Kyra Sedgwick; his full sister, Holly, is the mother of actor Philip Nozuka and singers George Nozuka, Justin Nozuka, and Henry Nozuka. Stern is married to guitarist and vocalist Leni Stern.
