Drosera, commonly known as the sundews, is one of the largest genera of carnivorous plants, with at least 194 species. These members of the family Droseraceae lure, capture, and digest insects using stalked mucilaginous glands covering their leaf surfaces. The insects are used to supplement the poor mineral nutrition of the soil in which they grow. Various species, which vary greatly in size and form, can be found growing natively on every continent except Antarctica.
Both the botanical name (from the Greek δρόσος: drosos = "dew, dewdrops") and the English common name (sundew, derived from Latin ros solis, meaning "dew of the sun") refer to the glistening drops of mucilage at the tip of each tentacle that resemble drops of morning dew.
Sundews are perennial (or rarely annual) herbaceous plants, forming prostrate or upright rosettes between 1 and 100 cm (0.39 and 39.37 in) in height, depending on the species. Climbing species form scrambling stems which can reach much longer lengths, up to 3 m (9.8 ft) in the case of D. erythrogyne. Sundews have been shown to be able to achieve a lifespan of 50 years. The genus is so specialized for nutrient uptake through its carnivorous behavior, the pygmy sundew is missing the enzymes (nitrate reductase, in particular) that plants normally use for the uptake of earth-bound nitrates.
Carnivorous plants are plants that derive some or most of their nutrients (but not energy) from trapping and consuming animals or protozoans, typically insects and other arthropods. Carnivorous plants have adapted to grow in places with high light where the soil is thin or poor in nutrients, especially nitrogen, such as acidic bogs and rock outcroppings. Charles Darwin wrote Insectivorous Plants, the first well-known treatise on carnivorous plants, in 1875.
True carnivory is thought to have evolved independently nine times in five different orders of flowering plants, and is represented by more than a dozen genera. This classification includes at least 583 species that attract, trap and kill prey, absorbing the resulting available nutrients. Additionally, over 300 protocarnivorous plant species in several genera show some but not all of these characteristics.
Five basic trapping mechanisms are found in carnivorous plants.

Out of the 3 types of plants that I have (Venus Flytraps, Pitcher Plant's and Sundews), it is the Sundew that get's the least attention from people. It's a shame, because when you look at them through macro photography and timelapse, they are probably among the most alien looking plants in the world. Carnivorous Cape Sundew (Drosera Capensis) Plant 3 inch pot http://goo.gl/KvGiJ These type of plants have strong light requirements and it is a myth that they need high humidity. The truth is that Carnivorous Plant setups with terrariums or humidity domes almost always cause these types of plants to eventually die. They need to be grown in open air with containers that allow air to get into their soil and there should be little to block or diffuse their lighting. A brief overview of how to grow a sundew. There are many species with different requirements, but most will grow with similar needs: -Nutrient-free soil (Peat or Sphagnum Moss, mixed w/ Perlite) -Distilled, RODI, or rain water low in TDS. -Watered so that the soil is always moist. -Good light, either full sun or grow-lights. -some can be grow outside all year, most can be brought inside and put in a terrarium. -No fertilizer, but can be fed bugs or fish food.
My plants won't come out of dormancy for another 3 months or so, but I really wanted to test out the focusing / quality levels of my recordings. Unfortunately, the Woodlouse escaped, but the video quality is superb.
This is definitely one of my better sundew timelapse videos. Not only was the focusing good, but the plant wrapped itself around the insect.
A collection of carnivorous plants, including snap traps like the Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula), flypaper traps such as the carnivorous plants of the the sundew genus (Drosera), pitfall traps including Sarracenia and Nepenthes, or pitcher plants, including Cobra Lily. Roridula is also covered.
Here's a list of the carnivorous plants I got. This is my second time ordering and I'm am not disappointed.
