"Queen Of The Nightclubs" TEXAS GUINAN in a super rare clip from April 1931 on stage at a Vaudeville Benefit for the poor. The Fan Dancer from Earl Carroll's Vanities just might be SALLY RAND!

Item title reads: "Texas Guinan back with her gang after taking French leave - New York night club hostess and her party, barred from France, return aboard liner with couple of hips and a hooray."
The legendary Texas Guinan and a gang of girls sing "Hail, Hail the gang's all Here" on the deck of an ocean liner. They all look great - presumably the girls are nightclub hostesses. Texas wears jodhpurs and a white jacket and beret. She makes a great speech about how she is the biggest sucker in the world because she went all the way to France to get put in prison when she could have been put in any jail in good old New York city.
"What's the greatest country in the whole world?" she asks her girls, "America!" they all reply!
Note: I think Texas Guinan was a stunt cowgirl before she was a nightclub hostess...

Some great Charleston from various 1920's newsreels. I'm not sure who the first dancer is though I had her name when I first downloaded this clip. At about the :35 mark we briefly see the legendary Mary "Texas" Guinan, at the :45 mark we see Stella Doyle aboard the Aquitania, at the 1:25 mark the first dancer is identified only as Miss Vaughn and at the 2:40 mark we see Josephine Baker. I've backed this silent footage with the Coon-Sanders Nighthawks 1925 recording of "I'm Gonna Charleston Back To Charleston".

Texas Guinan
Mary Louise Cecilia "Texas" Guinan (January 12, 1884 – November 5, 1933) was an American actress, producer, and entrepreneur.
Early life
Guinan was one of seven siblings born in Waco, Texas, to Irish-Canadian immigrants Michael and Bessie (née Duffy) Guinan. She attended parochial school at the Loretta Convent in Waco. When she was 16 years old, her family moved to Denver, Colorado, where she was in amateur stage productions and played the organ in church. Guinan married John Moynahan, a cartoonist for the Rocky Mountain News, on December 2, 1904. The union was childless. Moynahan's career took them to Chicago, where Guinan studied music before divorcing him and starting her career as a professional singer. She toured regional vaudeville with some success, but became known less for her singing than for her entertaining "Wild West"-related patter.
Career rise
In 1906, she moved to New York City, where she found work as a chorus girl before making a career for herself in national vaudeville and in New York theater productions. In 1917, "Texas" Guinan made her film debut in a silent film called The Wildcat. She became the United States's first movie cowgirl, nicknamed "The Queen of the West". She claimed she had a sojourn in France, entertaining the troops during World War I.

Texas
Texas /ˈtɛksəs/ (Spanish: Texas or Tejas [ˈtexas]) is a state in the United States of America. It is the second most populous and second largest state by area in the US. Bud's overbearing father, Ace Stamper, the local oil baron, does not believe Bud can do wrong and expects him to go to Yale after graduation, which does not fit within Bud's own expectations for himself. And the money and image conscious Mrs. Loomis just wants Deanie to get married as soon as possible to Bud so that Deanie will have a prosperous life in a rich family. When Bud makes a unilateral decision under these pressures, it leads to a path which affects both his and Deanie's future.

From Fox Movietone Newsreels 1920's Some great Charleston from various 1920's newsreels. I'm not sure who the first dancer is though I had her name when I first downloaded this clip. At about the :35 mark we briefly see the legendary Mary "Texas" Guinan, at the :45 mark we see Stella Doyle aboard the Aquitania, at the 1:25 mark the first dancer is identified only as Miss Vaughn and at the 2:40 mark we see Josephine Baker. I've backed this silent footage with the Coon-Sanders Nighthawks 1925 recording of "I'm Gonna Charleston Back To Charleston".

She informs the audience of Roxie's continual run of luck ("I Know a Girl") despite Roxie's obvious falsehoods ("Me and My Baby"). Daniel James Moody, Jr. (June 1, 1893 – May 22, 1966), was a Democratic political figure, originally from Taylor, Texas, USA. He served as the 30th Governor of Texas between 1927 and 1931. At the age of thirty-three, he was elected and took office as the youngest governor in Texas history. In 1920, Moody Jr. served as Williamson County Attorney, a position he held for two years before becoming District Attorney in 1922. In 1923, Moody obtained an assault conviction against four members of the Ku Klux Klan for beating and tarring a white traveling salesman. At this time, the Klan was very powerful in Texas, with an estimated 150,000 members in the state, including the national "imperial wizard". Daniel James Moody, Jr. (June 1, 1893 – May 22, 1966), was a Democratic political figure, originally from Taylor, Texas, USA. He served as the 30th Governor of Texas between 1927 and 1931. At the age of thirty-three, he was elected and took office as the youngest governor in Texas history.
In 1920, Moody Jr. served as Williamson County Attorney, a position he held for two years before becoming District Attorney in 1922. In 1923, Moody obtained an assault conviction against four members of the Ku Klux Klan for beating and tarring a white traveling salesman. At this time, the Klan was very powerful in Texas, with an estimated 150,000 members in the state, including the national "imperial wizard". Texas Klansmen included a U.S. senator and the mayors of Dallas, Fort Worth and Wichita Falls. This case was widely reported and gave him political momentum, despite Klan opposition.[3]
After election as Texas Attorney General in 1925, Moody Jr. conducted investigations of the highly corrupt James E. Ferguson, whose wife Miriam A. Ferguson was serving as the Governor of Texas. His investigation recovered $1 million for the taxpayers of Texas. In 1927, Moody defeated Ma Ferguson in a runoff election to become the youngest governor of Texas. A conservative Democrat, he served two terms as Governor before leaving public office. He supported a reform program of state prisons, roads and auditing system. In the 1930s he became a staunch critic of President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal. He resumed private law practice in Austin, Texas after his last term as Governor. Moody was third in the 1942 Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate seat behind former Governors W. Lee O'Daniel and James Allred, won by O'Daniel. Moody represented Coke R. Stevenson in his case against Lyndon B. Johnson over the hotly contested 1948 Democratic Senatorial Second Primary electoral dispute, Allred represented Johnson.
By the 1950s he was still a Democrat, but endorsed Republican Dwight Eisenhower for president in 1952 and 1956 and Republican Richard Nixon for President in 1960.
On April 20, 1926, he married Mildred Paxton of Abilene, Texas. The couple had two children.[5]
Governor and Mrs. Moody spent their remaining years in Austin. Dan Moody died in 1966 and was buried at the Texas State Cemetery.[6] Mildred outlived him by 17 years, dying in 1983. She is buried next to him.

We then visit "Follyland:" A group of chorus girls in night wear do a high kick routine. More chorus girls dance do high kicks with a man in a suit. "Waiting for You" is the name of the routine. Bobby Howes and Tim O'Connor perform a comedy skit called "The Waiter and the Guest" - shot missing. Vera performs high kicks, cartwheels and the splits in slow motion. Dancers perform "Pompadour" in costumes reminiscent of the days of Marie Antoinette.
Tex McLeod spins a lasso whilst wearing a suit. We see his act a second time in slow motion. Estelle Brody and Rupert Rogers perform - shot missing. Tim O'Connor performs an acrobatic comedy dance. Elsie Percival does an impression of Hal Sherman - chorus girls wave in the background. Edna Maude dances a fast Charleston on her toes. The Follies finale involves all the girls dancing on stage swinging their skirts. The curtains close.

From Fox Movietone Newsreels 1920's Some great Charleston from various 1920's newsreels. I'm not sure who the first dancer is though I had her name when I first downloaded this clip. At about the :35 mark we briefly see the legendary Mary "Texas" Guinan, at the :45 mark we see Stella Doyle aboard the Aquitania, at the 1:25 mark the first dancer is identified only as Miss Vaughn and at the 2:40 mark we see Josephine Baker. I've backed this silent footage with the Coon-Sanders Nighthawks 1925 recording of "I'm Gonna Charleston Back To Charleston".

The legendary Texas Guinan and a gang of girls sing "Hail, Hail the gang's all Here" on the deck of an ocean liner. They all look great - presumably the girls are nightclub hostesses. Texas wears jodhpurs and a white jacket and beret. She makes a great speech about how she is the biggest sucker in the world because she went all the way to France to get put in prison when she could have been put in any jail in good old New York city.
"What's the greatest country in the whole world?" she asks her girls, "America!" they all reply!
Note: I think Texas Guinan was a stunt cowgirl before she was a nightclub hostess...

Some great Charleston from various 1920's newsreels. I'm not sure who the first dancer is though I had her name when I first downloaded this clip. At about the :35 mark we briefly see the legendary Mary "Texas" Guinan, at the :45 mark we see Stella Doyle aboard the Aquitania, at the 1:25 mark the first dancer is identified only as Miss Vaughn and at the 2:40 mark we see Josephine Baker. I've backed this silent footage with the Coon-Sanders Nighthawks 1925 recording of "I'm Gonna Charleston Back To Charleston".

A 1929 musical comedy film produced by Florenz Ziegfeld that highlights Ziegfeld Follies performers. It is basically a Follies production, with cameo appearances by Rudy Vallee, Helen Morgan and Eddie Cantor. The movie contains brief shots of Noah Beery, Irving Berlin, Billie Burke, Charles B. Dillingham, Texas Guinan, Otto Kahn, Ring Lardner and Mayor of New York City Jimmy Walker as themselves. There is also an uncredited, non-speaking scene with Johnny Weissmuller wearing nothing but a fig leaf. The greater part of the final half of the film is a revue given over to a re-creation of a Follies production, replete with musical solos by Rudy Vallee and Helen Morgan and a comedy sketch with Eddie Cantor and Louis Sorin as a pair of Jewish tailors. She informs the audience of Roxie's continual run of luck ("I Know a Girl") despite Roxie's obvious falsehoods ("Me and My Baby"). A little shy on the arithmetic, Amos proudly claims paternity, and still nobody notices him ("Mr. Cellophane"). Velma tries to show Billy all the tricks she's got planned for her trial ("When Velma Takes The Stand"). With her ego growing, Roxie has a heated argument with Billy, and fires him. She is brought back down to earth when she learns that a fellow inmate has been executed. The trial date arrives, and Billy calms her, telling her if she makes a show of it, she'll be fine ("Razzle Dazzle").

The Texas Governor Who Took on the Klan in the 1920s: A Biography of Dan Moody (1999)
Daniel James Moody, Jr. (June 1, 1893 – May 22, 1966), was a Democratic political figure, originally from Taylor, Texas, USA. He served as the 30th Governor of Texas between 1927 and 1931. At the age of thirty-three, he was elected and took office as the youngest governor in Texas history. In 1920, Moody Jr. served as Williamson County Attorney, a position he held for two years before becoming District Attorney in 1922. In 1923, Moody obtained an assault conviction against four members of the Ku Klux Klan for beating and tarring a white traveling salesman. At this time, the Klan was very powerful in Texas, with an estimated 150,000 members in the state, including the national "imperial wizard". Texas Klansmen included a U.S. senator and the mayors of Dallas, Fort Worth and Wichita Falls. ...

Daniel James Moody, Jr. (June 1, 1893 – May 22, 1966), was a Democratic political figure, originally from Taylor, Texas, USA. He served as the 30th Governor of Texas between 1927 and 1931. At the age of thirty-three, he was elected and took office as the youngest governor in Texas history.
In 1920, Moody Jr. served as Williamson County Attorney, a position he held for two years before becoming District Attorney in 1922. In 1923, Moody obtained an assault conviction against four members of the Ku Klux Klan for beating and tarring a white traveling salesman. At this time, the Klan was very powerful in Texas, with an estimated 150,000 members in the state, including the national "imperial wizard". Texas Klansmen included a U.S. senator and the mayors of Dallas, Fort Worth and Wichita Falls. This case was widely reported and gave him political momentum, despite Klan opposition.[3]
After election as Texas Attorney General in 1925, Moody Jr. conducted investigations of the highly corrupt James E. Ferguson, whose wife Miriam A. Ferguson was serving as the Governor of Texas. His investigation recovered $1 million for the taxpayers of Texas. In 1927, Moody defeated Ma Ferguson in a runoff election to become the youngest governor of Texas. A conservative Democrat, he served two terms as Governor before leaving public office. He supported a reform program of state prisons, roads and auditing system. In the 1930s he became a staunch critic of President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal. He resumed private law practice in Austin, Texas after his last term as Governor. Moody was third in the 1942 Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate seat behind former Governors W. Lee O'Daniel and James Allred, won by O'Daniel. Moody represented Coke R. Stevenson in his case against Lyndon B. Johnson over the hotly contested 1948 Democratic Senatorial Second Primary electoral dispute, Allred represented Johnson.
By the 1950s he was still a Democrat, but endorsed Republican Dwight Eisenhower for president in 1952 and 1956 and Republican Richard Nixon for President in 1960.
On April 20, 1926, he married Mildred Paxton of Abilene, Texas. The couple had two children.[5]
Governor and Mrs. Moody spent their remaining years in Austin. Dan Moody died in 1966 and was buried at the Texas State Cemetery.[6] Mildred outlived him by 17 years, dying in 1983. She is buried next to him.
