A talent manager, also known as an artist manager or band manager, is an individual or company who guides the professional career of artists in the entertainment industry. The responsibility of the talent manager is to oversee the day-to-day business affairs of an artist; advise and counsel talent concerning professional matters, long-term plans and personal decisions which may affect their career.^[1]

The roles and responsibilities of a talent manager vary slightly from industry to industry, as do the commissions to which the manager is entitled. For example, a music manager's duties differ from those managers who advise actors, writers, or directors. A manager can also help artists find an agent, or help them decide when to leave their current agent and identify who to select as a new agent.^[2] Talent agents have the authority to make deals for their clients while managers usually can only informally establish connections with producers and studios but do not have the ability to negotiate contracts.

Music managers[link]

A music manager (or band manager) may handle career areas for bands, singers, and DJs.

A music manager may be hired by a musician or band, or the manager may discover the band, and the relationship is usually contractually bound with mutual assurances, warranties, performances guarantees, and so forth. The manager's main job is to help with determining decisions related to career moves, bookings, promotion, business deals, recording contracts, etc. The role of music managers can be extensive and may include similar duties to that of a press agent, promoter, booking agent, business manager (who are usually certified public accountants), tour managers, and sometimes even a personal assistant. Manager's contracts, however, cannot license those responsibilities unto the manager in the same way a state license would empower the agent to do so. Therefore, conflicting areas of interest may arise unless those are clarified in the contract. That said, a manager should be able to read and understand and explain a contract and study up on the long-term implications of contractual agreements that they, the bands, and the people they do business with, enter into.

Before the manager enters into an agreement with the band, their relationship may be regarded as competing for interest; after a good contract is signed, their interests, obligations and incentives are aligned, and the interest in success is shared.

Responsibilities of a music manager are often divided among many who manage various aspects of a musical career. With an unsigned act, music managers may assume multiple roles: graphic designer, publicist, promoter, and handling money and finances.^[3] As an artist's career develops, responsibilities may grow, and because of their percentage agreement with the band, the manager's income may grow as well. A music manager becomes important to managing the many different pieces that make up a career in music. The manager can assist singers, songwriters, and instrumentalists in molding a career, finding music producers, and developing relationships with record companies, publishers, agents, and the music-loving public. They should carefully consider when certain contributions have been made which would also entitle them to cowriting credits, Executive Producer credit, or Producer credit should they become involved in songwriting, financing works, or actually producing demos and recordings, and should carefully know these jobs and these fees should be considered either as separate from the contract, in addition to the contract, or as free to the musician as clarified in emails and the contract. The duties of an active music manager may include supporting the band's development of a reputation for the musician(s) and building a fan base, which may include mastering and launching a demo CD, developing and releasing press kits, planning promotional activities, creating social network identities for bands, and booking shows. A music manager may be present during recording sessions and should support the artist during the creative process while not interfering between the artist and the producer, but also musicians may also find valuable feedback in 3rd pair of ears and this should be carefully considered as well. They may gain access to a recording studio, photographers, and promotions. He or she will see that CD labels, posters, and promotional materials appropriately represent the band or artist, and that press kits are released in a timely manner to appropriate media. Launching a CD with complementary venues and dates is also a music manager's responsibility.

Early on in an artist's career, the different facets of management and marketing fall upon either the band itself or, if they have one, their manager. Because the band or artist is relatively unknown initially, promotion, booking, and touring are minimal. A new music manager begins by establishing a clear understanding of what the artist(s) want. This can be accomplished through either a written or verbal contract. A music manager's first task is to solidify all artist development aspects and then concentrate on product development.

Compensation[link]

Striking a tentative compensation agreement that can be renegotiated after three or four months is recommended, and the rate of pay is generally based on commissions of 15 percent or more of performance and commercial incomes [4]. This amount depends on the level of development the band or artist is at and the experience, networks and resources of the manager. (The less developed the artist and more experienced the manager, the higher the commission.) The artist or band should never agree to circumstances that cannot be terminated or negotiated within a short period of time.^[4]

Managers usually secure the services of a professional photographer while the artist is recording. Different 8x10 pictures of the artist can be used for websites, CD labels/jackets, posters, and the press kit. Cost for high quality shoots vary from $500 for a basic shoot to thousands for several looks. Photographers are not expected to cover material cost. It is important that the manager obtains an agreement upfront confirming license to use the images which will cover the uses necessary, in addition to high resolution digital images on CD. Managers are also advised to have photographs taken before CD designs or artwork goes into production. Managers are also responsible for hiring additional staff when necessary.

Scott Samuel "Scooter" Braun (born June 18, 1981) is an American talent manager. His acts appear on two record labels, Raymond-Braun Media Group (RBMG) and Schoolboy Records.^[2] The most prominent artist Braun represents is Justin Bieber, who is signed to Raymond-Braun Media Group.^[3] Asher Roth, also a Braun client, is signed to Schoolboy Records.^[4]

Early life and education[link]

Braun was born in New York City.^[5] He comes from a Hungarian Jewish family. His father and paternal grandparents lived in Hungary until 1956. Just before the Soviet Union intervened to suppress the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, the family fled to the United States of America. In Hungary, his grandfather had been a dental student, but when he arrived in the United States, he took work as a lab technician in Queens. To make ends meet, Braun's grandmother took work in a New York sweatshop.^[6]

Braun's father, Dr. Ervin Braun, followed in his own father's footsteps, becoming a dentist in Manhattan. During dental school, he met Susan Schlussel, also a dental student,^[7] and the two married. After Scooter Braun was born,^[5] the family moved to Greenwich, Connecticut. His father was active in youth sports in the Greenwich area, founding the Connecticut Flame AAU basketball program.^[6]

As a middle school student, Braun entered a national video documentary contest. His entry was a ten-minute short film titled "The Hungarian Conflict", which focused on Holocaust-era Hungarian Jewry.^[6] Braun's film won 3rd place.^[6] A member of Braun's family sent the film to Steven Spielberg's office, which, in turn, submitted Braun's video to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The film is still being shown today.^[6]

Braun attended Greenwich High School, and played basketball from age 17 to 20. He was a member of the Amateur Athletic Union^[6] and class president.^[8]

Braun went to college at Emory University in Atlanta. He also played college basketball at Emory until a disagreement with his coach during his sophomore year.^[6]

Braun began his career organizing parties at Emory University.^[8] His parties drew notice throughout Atlanta, attracting celebrity performers like Ludacris and Britney Spears.^[2] By the end of his sophomore year, Braun formally established his own party-promotion business. He suffered fierce competition from other promoters such as Todd Mekles, also an Emory student. Braun and Mekles eventually joined up to become the most dominating promoting team Atlanta ever saw. They went separate ways as Mekles had to pursue a medical career, now practicing Internal Medicine in New York. Braun and Mekles remain lifelong friends. In 2002, Braun was hired to plan afterparties in each of the five cities on the Anger Management Tour, featuring Ludacris and Eminem.^[8]

This launch into the world of hip-hop led Braun to producer Jermaine Dupri, the director of So So Def Records.^[2] Braun was 19 years old when Dupri asked him to join So So Def in a marketing position, and 20 when Dupri named him So So Def's executive director for marketing.^[2] Still in his sophomore year at Emory, Braun was working at So So Def and operating his party promotion business. Some of his larger events included parties for the 2003 NBA All-Star Game and after parties on the Britney Spears Onyx Hotel Tour.^[8] After his junior year, Braun left college. He is widely recognized as Justin Bieber's manager, even getting him a "swagger coach" to help with his so called "ladies' man" image. He is frequently seen in Bieber's 3D concert film and biopic Never Say Never^[6]

On the 14th February 2012 Braun and Justin Bieber signed canadian signer Carly Rae Jepsen to Schoolboy Records/Interscope Records; Schoolboy Records forms part of Braun's entertainment and marketing company, SB Projects.

Roosevelt Field Mall incident[link]

In March 2010, Braun was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment and criminal nuisance, both misdemeanors.^[9] After a crowd became unruly at Roosevelt Field Mall, police asked him to send out a tweet announcing the cancellation of an appearance by Justin Bieber. Police allege that he delayed for more than an hour. Braun denies the charges, indicating that he complied with the request twice within seven minutes.^[9] On October 13, 2010, a pre-trial conference in the case was continued for rescheduling to a future date.^[10]

On June 18, 2011, Braun celebrated his 30th birthday, hosted at Hollywood's Music Box. Guests in attendance included Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton, Drew Gooden, Jimmy Iovine, Nicky Hilton along with performances by Justin Bieber, Asher Roth, MC Hammer, Jaden Smith and Usher.^[11] Braun dated longtime girlfriend Carin Morris from 2007 to 2012. Scooter's brother Adam is the founder of Pencils of Promise; both Scooter and Bieber have worked in support of the organization.^[12]

Brent Jay Spiner (born February 2, 1949)^[1][2] is an American actor, best known for his portrayal of the android Lieutenant Commander Data in the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation and four subsequent films. His portrayal of Data in Star Trek: First Contact and of Dr. Brackish Okun in Independence Day, both in 1996, earned him a Saturn Award and Saturn Award nomination respectively. He has also enjoyed a career in the theatre and as a musician.

Early life[link]

Spiner was born in Houston, Texas, to Sylvia and Jack Spiner, who owned a furniture store.^[3] After his father's death, Spiner was adopted by Sylvia's second husband, Sol Mintz, whose surname he used between 1955 and 1975.^[4] Spiner attended Bellaire High School, Bellaire, Texas, where he was influenced by drama teacher Cecil Pickett—the same man who coached his daughter Cindy Pickett, and future actors Randy Quaid, Dennis Quaid, Trey Wilson, Robert Wuhl, and director Thomas Schlamme. Spiner became active on the Bellaire Speech team, winning the national championship in dramatic interpretation. He attended the University of Houston where he performed in local theatre.^[5]

Spiner moved to New York City, where he became a stage actor, performing in several Broadway and Off-Broadway plays, including The Three Musketeers and Stephen Sondheim's Sunday in the Park with George. He had a nonspeaking background role in the film Stardust Memories as one of the silent Felliniesque "grotesques" on Sandy Bates's train car.

Spiner appeared as a media technician in "The Advocates", a second season episode of the Showtime cable series The Paper Chase.^[6] In 1984 he moved to Los Angeles, where he appeared in several pilots and made-for-TV movies. He played a recurring character on Night Court, Bob Wheeler, patriarch of a rural family. In 1986 he played a condemned soul in "Dead Run", an episode of the short-lived revival of Rod Serling's Twilight Zone series on CBS. He made two appearances as characters in season 3 (1986) of the television show Mama's Family, playing two different characters. Spiner's first and only starring film role was in Rent Control (1984). In the Cheers episode "Never Love a Goalie, Part II", he played acquitted murder suspect Bill Grand. Spiner also had a role in a Tales from the Darkside episode, "A Case Of The Stubborns", as a priest who experiences a crisis of faith. He portrayed Jim Stevens in the made-for-TV movie Manhunt for Claude Dallas.

In 1987 Spiner started his 15-year run portraying Lieutenant Commander Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation, which spanned 7 seasons and 4 feature films. As a main character, he appeared in all but one of the series' 178 episodes; he was not in the episode, "Family". He reprised his role in the spin-off films, Star Trek: Generations (1994), Star Trek: First Contact (1996), Star Trek: Insurrection (1998), and Star Trek: Nemesis (2002). Although billed as the final Trek movie for the TNG cast, the ambiguous ending of Star Trek: Nemesis suggested a possible avenue for the return of Data. However, Spiner has opined that he is too old to continue playing the part, as Data embodies a "childlike innocence" that Spiner can no longer credibly exhibit, as his appearance had already begun to lose that quality by the time he filmed his last Trek films.^[7][8] In addition to the shows and films he voiced his character in several Star Trek video games, such as Star Trek Generations, Star Trek: The Next Generation - A Final Unity, Star Trek: Hidden Evil, and Star Trek: Bridge Commander.^[9]

In 1991 Spiner recorded an album of 1940s pop standards entitled Ol' Yellow Eyes Is Back, the title of which was a play on the yellow contact lenses Spiner sported as Data and a Frank Sinatra's record, Ol' Blue Eyes Is Back. In 1997 he returned to Broadway, playing John Adams in the Roundabout Theatre Company revival of the musical 1776. The production was nominated for a Tony Award. A cast recording was released of the revival production.^[10]

Spiner has appeared on the TV shows Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Friends, Dream On, Deadly Games, Mad About You, Gargoyles, Frasier, The Outer Limits, as well as Joey and The Big Bang Theory as himself. He has also had several movie roles, including Independence Day, Phenomenon, Out to Sea, South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut, Dude, Where's My Car?, The Ponder Heart, I Am Sam, The Master of Disguise, and The Aviator. His TV movie appearances during this period include the 2000 TV musical Geppetto, and playing Dorothy Dandridge's manager/confidant Earl Mills in the HBO production Introducing Dorothy Dandridge.

In 2004 Spiner returned to Star Trek when he appeared as Dr. Arik Soong, an ancestor of Data's creator Dr. Noonien Soong, whom he also played, in a three-episode story arc of Star Trek: Enterprise in "Borderland", "Cold Station 12", and "The Augments". He also briefly reprised the role of Data for the series, providing a voice-only cameo in the Enterprise finale, "These Are the Voyages...". Spiner guest-starred in Friends as a man who interviews Rachel for Gucci, and later cameoed as himself in the Friends spinoff, Joey.

In 2005 Spiner appeared in a short-lived science-fiction television series, Threshold, which was canceled in November of that year after 13 episodes. In 2006 he appeared in a feature film comedy, Material Girls, with Hilary and Haylie Duff.

During the tenth season of the sitcom Frasier, in the episode "Lilith Needs a Favor", Spiner made two brief cameos as a fellow airline passenger of Frasier Crane's ex-wife, Lilith Sternin.^{[episode needed]}

In March 2008 Spiner performed alongside Maude Maggart in a radio show/musical, Dreamland.^[11] This was released as a CD album.^[12] In February 2008 Spiner joined the celebrities who feature on popular online sites like MySpace, under the name of 'The Real Brent Spiner'.

In 2008 Spiner played Dr. Strom in the feature film parody Superhero Movie. In February 2009 he played William Quint in "The Juror #6 Job", an episode of the drama series Leverage directed by his Next Generation co-star Jonathan Frakes. That same year he voiced himself in the Family Guy episode "Not All Dogs Go to Heaven".

In 2010 Spiner and fellow Star Trek: The Next Generation star LeVar Burton appeared on TWiT.tv's coverage of the Consumer Electronics Show.^[13]

In April 2011 Spiner began starring in Fresh Hell, a comic webseries in which he plays a version of himself, attempting to put his career back together after falling out of the limelight.^[14]

He appeared as Dr. Kern in the September 12, 2011 episode of the Syfy channel program Alphas entitled "Blind Spot". In October 2011 he appeared as himself in the episode "The Russian Rocket Reaction" (October 13, 2011) of The Big Bang Theory. The day after his guest appearance on The Big Bang Theory, it was announced that Spiner would guest-star in the Young Justice episode "Revelation", providing the voice of the Joker.^[15]
