The Hidden Life of the Barbary Macaques
This is a video about the Barbary Macaques. It is filmed in the Atlas Cedar forest of Ifrane in the Middle Atlas of Morocco. These macaques are only found in the Atlas Mountains of Algeria and Morocco with a small, possibly introduced, population in Gibraltar. The monkey is yellowish-brown to grey with lighter undersides, growing to a maximum size of 75 cm (30 in) and 13 kg (29 lb). Its face is a dark pink and its tail is vestigial. The front limbs of this monkey are longer than its hind limbs. Females are somewhat smaller than males. Dwelling in forests of cedar, pine and oak, the Barbary Macaque may frequent elevations of 2100 m (6900 ft) or more. It is a diurnal animal, dividing its time more or less equally between arboreal and terrestrial territory. Mostly herbivorous, this monkey feeds on leaves, roots, and fruit, but will also eat insects. By day, the Barbary Macaque patrols a territory which may span several square kilometers. The Barbary Macaque moves about energetically on all fours, occasionally rising erect on its hind limbs to survey for threats.

Monkey Forest - Barbary Macaques at Trentham Gardens
Monkey Forest - Barbary macaques at Trentham Gardens Estate In October 2008, Barbary macaques were elevated in status from vulnerable to endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This is because they have been under threat in their natural habitat in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco and Algeria. Threats come from deforestation, cattle farmers and animal abusers in the pet trade. Monkey Forest at Trentham Gardens (between Stoke and Stone in Staffordshire) aim to raise awareness of the plight of the Barbary macaque. Importantly, they are trying to create and preserve an invaluable genetic pool with the population in the park so they can use this to strengthen the wild populations by re-introducing entire groups of monkeys. So far they have re-introduced more than 600 macaques back into their natural habitat. At Monkey Forest the 140 or so Barbary macaques roam in total freedom in a 60 acre forest. As you enter the park, you can see the monkeys living as they would in the Atlas mountains of Algeria and Morocco. The two groups of monkeys at Trentham come from other Monkey Forest parks in France and Germany - so the monkeys have lived all their lives in a similar setting. They have a non-invasive policy, where they intervene as little as possible, allowing you to see the monkey's natural behaviour just as you would in the wild. Yes - this does include squabbles and fights, but that's nature! A 3/4 mile winding forest path takes you through the ...

My pet monkey Shakira (barbary macaque)
Shakira my pet monkey! I get a lot of bad comments on here so here is a little info about my monkey before you decide to leave a negative comment. We saved this monkey from her cruel owners. I also agree they shouldn't be taken from the wild. I saw this monkey being treated poorly in a small cage with another 3 baby monkeys. The other monkeys were all hitting her. I couldn't stand to watch it so I offered to buy her from the man. He agreed for a small fortune. I took her home, fed and bathed her. She was nervous at first but she loved me like a mother. I took her to the vets and spent a lot on her. I saved her so say what you want. I couldn't release her back into the wild because she would die she cannot look after herself. What do you think is better that I left her with the horrible man or I took her home and looked after her??? She was free to play in my big garden and she never escaped. In this video i took her to my mothers that's why she is on a lead because i do not want her to ruin her house. So please stop attacking me people!!

The Middle Atlas Mountains in Morocco are home to North Africa's only non-human primate - the Barbary Macaque.
I produced this short documentary for my MA degree in Wildlife Documentary Production from the University of Salford. It illustrates the struggles that the monkeys face in their mountain home, and how their ability to learn and co-operate enables their survival.
For more information about the making of the film please visit my blog: http://bentuttonphotography.co.uk/blog/

Barbary Apes
The Barbary Macaque population in Gibraltar is the last in the whole of the European continent. At present there are some 230 animals in five troops occupying the area of the Upper Rock, though it's not unusual for some of the group to make their way down the slope and into town.

Magot (Barbary Macaque)
The Barbary Macaque (Macaca sylvanus) or Common macaque is a macaque with only a stub of a tail. Found in the Atlas Mountains of Algeria and Morocco with a small, possibly introduced, population in Gibraltar, the Barbary Macaque is one of the best-known Old World monkey species. Besides humans, they are the only primates that live freely in Europe. Although the species is commonly referred to as the "Barbary Ape", the Barbary Macaque is a true monkey, not an ape.
