English Channel
The English Channel (French: la Manche, Breton: Mor Breizh, Cornish: Mor Bretannek), often referred to simply as the Channel, is an arm of the Atlantic Ocean that separates southern England from northern France, and joins the North Sea to the Atlantic. It is about 560 km (350 mi) long and varies in width from 240 km (150 mi) at its widest to 34 km (21 mi) in the Strait of Dover. It is the smallest of the shallow seas around the continental shelf of Europe, covering an area of some 75,000 km2 (29,000 sq mi).
The International Hydrographic Organization defines the limits of the English Channel as follows:
On the West. A line joining Isle Vierge (48°38′23″N 4°34′13″W / 48.63972°N 4.57028°W / 48.63972; -4.57028) to Lands End (50°04′N 5°43′W / 50.067°N 5.717°W / 50.067; -5.717).
On the East. The Southwestern limit of the North Sea.
The IHO defines the southwestern limit of the North Sea as "a line joining the Walde Lighthouse (France, 1°55'E) and Leathercoat Point (England, 51°10'N)". The Walde Lighthouse is 6 km east of Calais (50°59′06″N 1°55′00″E / 50.985°N 1.9166667°E / 50.985; 1.9166667), and Leathercoat Point is at the north end of St Margaret's Bay, Kent (51°10′00″N 1°24′00″E / 51.1666667°N 1.4°E / 51.1666667; 1.4).

The Isle of Sheppey is an island off the northern coast of Kent, England in the Thames Estuary, some 46 miles (74 km) to the east of London. It has an area of 36 square miles (93 km2). The island forms part of the local government district of Swale. Sheppey is derived from the ancient Saxon "Sceapige", meaning isle of sheep, and even today the extensive marshes which make up a considerable proportion of the island provide grazing for large flocks of sheep. The island, like much of north Kent, comprises London Clay and is a plentiful source of fossils. The land mass referred to as Sheppey comprises three main islands: Sheppey, the Isle of Harty and the Isle of Elmley (it was once known as the Isles of Sheppey before the channels separating them silted up), but the marshy nature of the land to the south of the island means that it is so crossed by channels and drains as to consist of a multitude of islands. The ground is mainly low-lying, but at The Mount near Minster rises to 250 feet (76 metres) above sea level.

Kent
Kent /ˈkɛnt/ is a county in South East England, and one of the home counties. It borders East Sussex, Surrey and Greater London and has a defined boundary with Essex in the middle of the Thames Estuary. The ceremonial county boundaries of Kent include the shire county of Kent and the unitary borough of Medway. Kent has a nominal border with France halfway through the Channel Tunnel. River Swale
The River Swale is a river in Yorkshire, England and a major tributary of the River Ure, which itself becomes the River Ouse, emptying into the North Sea via the Humber Estuary.
The name Swale is from the Anglo-Saxon word Sualuae meaning rapid and liable to deluge. Annual rainfall figures of 1800mm p.a. in the headwaters and 1300mm p.a. in the lower waters over a drop of 148m in 32 km, gives proof to its name. The river gives its name to the valley through which it flows, namely Swaledale.
The river and its valley are home to many types of flora and fauna typical to the Yorkshire Dales. Like similar rivers in the region, the river carves through several types of rock and has features typical of both river and glacial erosion. The River Swale has been a contributory factor in the settlements that have been recorded throughout its history. It has provided water to aid in the raising of crops and livestock, but also in the various mining activities that have occurred since Roman times and before.

When the Romans arrived in Britain, the Swale extended much wider than it does today, with one part of the Isle of Sheppey — now called the Isle of Harty — a separate island. Eilert Ekwall
Bror Oscar Eilert Ekwall (born 8 January 1877 in Vallsjö, Jönköpings län, Sweden, died 23 November 1964 in Lund), known as Eilert Ekwall, was Professor of English at Lund University, Sweden, from 1909 to 1942, and one of the outstanding scholars of the English language of the first half of the 20th century. He wrote works on the history of the language, but is best known as the author of numerous important books on English place-names (in the broadest sense) and personal names.
His chief works in this area are The Place-Names of Lancashire (1922), English Place-Names in -ing (1923, new edition 1961), English River Names (1928), Studies on English Place- and Personal Names (1931), Studies on English Place-Names (1936), Street-Names of the City of London (1954), Studies on the Population of Medieval London (1956), and the monumental Concise Oxford Dictionary of English Place-Names (1936, new editions 1940, 1947/51 and the last in 1960). The Dictionary remained the standard national reference resource for over 40 years, and is still valuable even though some aspects of Ekwall's methodology and some of his ideas are no longer accepted. Although not a county editor of the survey conducted by the English Place-Name Society (1923-date), his philological advice was often sought and acknowledged by scholars preparing the county volumes, such as Allen Mawer and Frank Stenton. He was competent not only in English philology, but also in Scandinavian and Celtic, making him ideally qualified as an authority on linguistic aspects of the place-names of England.

Faculty, Students and Staff from UMass Amherst coordinated efforts to build the first bio-retention swale in the core of campus. The swale captures surface runoff from Stockbridge Rd., slowing it down and allowing it time to infiltrate rather than enter the storm water drainage system. With a capacity of +/- 3500 gallons, the swale reduces the the volume of water in the campus drainage system thus lessening the impact of out flow down stream. Dr. Jack Ahern, Faculty LARP, and Maxwell Cohen, BSLA Senior initiated this design while Michael Davidsohn, Faculty LARP, finalized the design and coordinated the construction. Stockbridge Landscape Contracting Seniors, class of 2010, along with significant support from UMass Construction Services built the bio-retention swale from mid March through mid May during the Spring semester 2010. Plants such as rushes, sedges, boneset, aster, iris and gray, silky and redosier dogwoods where used and when ever possible planted low enough to be within the flood zone of the swale.

This lovely song is often sung at the Royal in Dungworth near Christmas - here with the solo sung by Geoff Lester. Dave and Dave with the basses had a discussion about this song's origins at the this Sunday lunchtime singing before Christmas - something to do with Dave the landlord having had a pub in Swaledale and bringing some singers with him to Dungworth who sang it. You can hear all the other Daves joining in with gusto on the chorus - although this Dave kept a bit quiet because it always distorts on video if the cameraman is also singing. The song is sometimes described as "Central to the tradition," which generally means people have no idea why they're singing it but enjoy belting it out all the same!

bepreparedchannel.com This is the second swale in my backyard. This one we completed the digging, lined with cardboard or packing paper. Then placed small sticks, small logs up to about 4-6" in diameter, branches etc in the bottom of the swale. This is about 1-2' deep in branches in the bottom of this swale. This video shows what that looks like before we bury it in composted manure, peat moss, leaf litter, and then a layer of compost. I hope you find this helpful and useful. I will post a follow up video showing what this looks like once we have completed the layering.

Geoff Lawton on the use of swales (shallow ditches) for passive water harvesting for individual farms in hot and dry climates. The genius is that it keeps water from evaporating, by storing it under ground, moving slowly through the soil, and keeping it available for extended periods of time. As much of Third World agriculture is still rain fed, this is a low cost alternative to huge government dams that need a lot of maintenance and create risks in dam failure. Where large irrigation dams disrupt people, the ecology, and cost millions to build, small on-farm water harvesting ditches like these can be put in place on any farm, whithout disrupting the area around it.

The Swale is crossed at its western end by two bridges: the Kingsferry Bridge and the later Sheppey Crossing.

The Swale forms both a National Nature Reserve and a Special Protection Area: the eel grass, Ray's knotgrass, white seakale, glassworts and golden samphire support rare and uncommon migrant butterflies and moths, including the Essex emerald, the ground lackey, the clouded yellow butterfly and rare hawk-moths.
