Get the word out on this video. - Tuesday May 17 2011 2:14 pm en.wikipedia.org Since it shares its climate and agricultural practices with the other Scandinavian countries, and some of Central and Eastern Europe, Danish cuisine has much in common with them. Nevertheless, it has its own distinguishing features, which were formed by a variety of influences during the country's long and difficult history. Before the widespread industrialisation of Denmark (ca. 1860), small family-based agriculture formed the vast majority of Danish society. As in most agrarian societies, people lived practically self-sufficiently, and made do with the food they could produce themselves, or what could be purchased locally. This meant reliance on locally available food products, which form the basis of the traditional diet: cereal products, dairy products, pork, seafood, apples, plums, carrots, potatoes, onions, beer, and bread. As in most pre-industrial societies, long winters and a lack of refrigeration meant that foods which could be stored for a long time came to predominate. This helps to explain the lack of fresh fruits and vegetables in many traditional recipes, and the emphasis placed on seasonally available foods. It also helps explain some of the traditional food preparation processes which favored smoking, pickling, and other food preservation techniques that ...

Land Between the seas
************************* A love letter to my home Schleswig-Holstein (Danish: Holsten-Slesvig, Frisian: Slaswik-Holstiinj, Low German: Sleswig-Holsteen) is the northernmost state in the Federal Republic of Germany and is called the land between the seas - designated - North Sea and Baltic Sea. Denmark at War
The military of Europe's oldest monarchy, the Kingdom of Denmark, in action throughout the centuries. Danish Vikings expanded to Iceland and Greenland, took over much of Ireland and Britain before becoming Christian. They expanded into southern Norway and Sweden with Norway being under the Danish crown until the Napoleonic wars. During the era of the Kalmar Union almost all of Scandinavia was united by the Danish monarchy. The 30 Years War and the Napoleonic Wars were considerable setbacks but Denmark later became a colonial power with holdings in the West Indies, Africa and India. After a defeat by Prussia in the war over Schleswig-Holstein Denmark adopted a policy of neutrality and stayed out of World War I but was occupied during World War II though the Germans maintained that Denmark was a protectorate rather than a conquered foe. In recent decades Danish troops have participated in a number of peace-keeping missions around the world.

Queen Elizabeth banbury visit 27-11-08
Queen Elizabeth II visit to Banbury after 49 years on 27th November 2008, with Prince Philip. (Elizabeth II, (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary; born 21 April 1926) is the queen regnant of 16 independent states and their overseas territories and dependencies. Though she holds each crown and title separately and equally, and carries out duties in and on behalf of the other states of which she is monarch, Elizabeth is resident in and most directly involved with the United Kingdom, her oldest realm; part of her lineage traces through the royal houses of England, Wessex, and Scotland for over 1500 years. She ascended the thrones of seven countries in February 1952, on the death of her father King George VI. In addition to the United Kingdom, Elizabeth II is also Queen of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, Barbados, the Bahamas, Grenada, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Belize, Antigua and Barbuda, and Saint Kitts and Nevis, in each of which she is represented by a Governor-General. The 16 countries of which she is Queen are known informally and unofficially as Commonwealth realms; their combined population, including dependencies, is over 129 million, and their total land area makes Elizabeth one of only a few monarchs to reign over parts of every continent on earth. In theory her powers are vast; however, in practice (and in accordance with convention), she rarely intervenes in political matters. Elizabeth II also ...

22. Fascists
European Civilization, 1648-1945 (HIST 202) While Nazi Germany's crimes were unprecedented, Adolf Hitler himself was in many respects a typical figure. An idle youth, of seemingly mediocre talents, his political career and passionate hatreds were formed by the experience of World War I. The rise of fascism in Germany, as elsewhere, must be understood in the context of a postwar climate of resentment and instability. Germany's economic crisis, in particular, led the middle classes to support National Socialism well before any other group. This resentment would find a ready outlet in the form of increasingly persecuted minority populations, above all the Jews. In considering Nazism against the backdrop of a more general wave of extreme rightwing and fascist political sentiment, it is important to note that the policies of the Third Reich were not only known to but also endorsed by the majority of the German population. 00:00 - Chapter 1.
