Friday the 13th Flounder Fishing On The River Adur. . .
It was a wet and windy day but we managed to pull out a few fish between the heavy down pours and high winds.
The River Adur in Shoreham by Sea Sussex. A lovely river next to a small airport,Sea scouts club and house boats.

Oh man, I went up the River Adur with the tide on my race board. I was whizzing along so fast. I thought this is my opportunity to go as far as the pub in Bramber, then wait until the tide turns at 11.14am, then come back with the tide. Well I´ve never been to this so called pub on the river, I didn´t even know the name of it, but have always had a idillic picture of it in my head. Anyway, I didn´t see it! I´d gone past it, miles past it, I was up in Henfield. I only turned around because I met a fisherman fishing on the river bank, who informed my where I was. Anyway the tide is different up at Henfield, the river turns much later up there. So I was paddling back against the tide, until I got to Upper Beeding. Then I had the tide with me again. The moral of this story, if planning an unpredictable long journey up the River Adur is to take your phone and some water. I took neither. The last 10 miles was draining and I was so thirsty plus Lisa thought I´d gone missing. Luckily on my return I met an elderly couple on a bridge in Steyning, they left a message on Lisa´s phone. I left Shoreham lifeboat station at 9.38am and returned at 15.10pm. I think I´m all River Adur´d out now, lol

The Adur is a river in Sussex, England; it gives its name to the Adur district of West Sussex. The river was formerly navigable for large vessels up as far as Steyning, where there was a large port, but over time the river valley became silted up and the port moved down to the deeper waters nearer the mouth in Shoreham-by-Sea.
The Adur begins as two separate branches, the western Adur and the eastern Adur, which meet just west of Henfield at Betley Bridge.
The western Adur rises at Slinfold from where it flows around Coolham and then through Shipley, where it meets Lancing Brook and flows on to West Grinstead and Knepp Castle. The western Adur is tidal as far north as Bines Bridge near Bines Green, south of West Grinstead.
The eastern Adur rises at Ditchling Common, in East Sussex, from where it crosses into West Sussex and meets another major stream at Twineham. At Shermanbury, the eastern Adur is fed by the Cowfold Stream. The Normal Tidal Limit is just below this at the footbridge near Shermanbury Church although a weir just above the confluence with the Western Adur means that only the highest tides reach here. Up to the early 1800s boats could navigate to Mock Bridge where the A281 crosses the Adur.

However I did go past it and exited the water after the bridge. For future reference, exit the water 70 metres before the bridge on the right hand side. My SUP paddle from Shoreham Life Boat Station to The Kings Head Pub in Upper Beeding. I finally found the pub after my last failed attempt. However I did go past it and exited the water after the bridge. For future reference, exit the water 70 metres before the bridge on the right hand side. There you will find a gate to the Pub beer garden. I also tested out my new SUP paddle.

Charley & Paul SUPing from Ádur Outdoor Activity Centre to Kings Head Pub´in Upper Beeding and back. Timed the journey/adventure really well as the tide/wind pushed us up to Upper Beeding. The return journey started off ok, the tide was moving quickly, then kinda died off at the cement works. The wind also picked up too. So we tied the boards together and towed the rest of the way back. Navigating the deepest water channels as low tide was approaching. Great adventure for Charley, he absolutely loved it.

"Instead of of asking us our opinion on whether we should put pressure on Southern Water to install a sewage system your time would be better employed in writing to SW and Tim Loughton on behalf of A.H.A. pointing out that what they said and implied on the radio on Monday, was both misleading and libellous, also reminding Tim Loughton that he stated to several people on Saturday that he would retract his statement that the river is turned brown by our sewage on the radio on Monday, this he did NOT do, in fact the implication was backed up by SW saying that they looked to the house boats as the cause. They omitted to mention their own inefficient sewage works in Burgess hill that CANNOT cope with excessive storm water and that under these conditions they are allowed to release raw sewage into the river Adur which then runs by us, also that the sewage system in Lancing gets overwhelmed with surface water and overflows into the storm culverts that then run by the dogs trust.
Maybe you could canvass members on this subject.

We on the Houseboat community wish to know if you retracted your accusations regarding our boats being responsible for some "coloured water".
Could you tell us if you did retract this statement and if so where. If you did could you make it more widely known e.g. on your site as there seems to be some confusion as to whether you did retract or not, and even may have repeated it.
What is your present opinion about this matter?

Dear Mr Bolstridge - thank you for your email and I am sorry I have not responded earlier.
I am not sure where this story about a 'retraction' comes from. I am sorry if my language was overly graphic but the point remains the same - that it is not desirable that sewage is being discharged into the River Adur however effective the microbiology of the mud flats and we should be progressing alternatives.
I raised the issue in Parliament to explore the possibility of funding to help the houseboat owners connect to mains sewage especially when the western arm defence work is undertaken and I am keen to help with this. I gather the main sticking point to date has been the cost although there appears to have been some fairly inflated estimates of the amounts involved.

They omitted to mention their own inefficient sewage works in Burgess hill that CANNOT cope with excessive storm water and that under these conditions they are allowed to release raw sewage into the river Adur which then runs by us, also that the sewage system in Lancing gets overwhelmed with surface water and overflows into the storm culverts that then run by the dogs trust.

We on the Houseboat community wish to know if you retracted your accusations regarding our boats being responsible for some "coloured water".
Could you tell us if you did retract this statement and if so where. If you did could you make it more widely known e.g. on your site as there seems to be some confusion as to whether you did retract or not, and even may have repeated it.
What is your present opinion about this matter?

Dear Mr Bolstridge - thank you for your email and I am sorry I have not responded earlier.
I am not sure where this story about a 'retraction' comes from. I am sorry if my language was overly graphic but the point remains the same - that it is not desirable that sewage is being discharged into the River Adur however effective the microbiology of the mud flats and we should be progressing alternatives.
I raised the issue in Parliament to explore the possibility of funding to help the houseboat owners connect to mains sewage especially when the western arm defence work is undertaken and I am keen to help with this. I gather the main sticking point to date has been the cost although there appears to have been some fairly inflated estimates of the amounts involved.

Another bracing 13 miles across the South Downs National Park. From Amberley, the walker is quickly climbing to join the South Downs Way, which is followed pretty much for the whole walk; a slight deviation is made to enjoy some wonderful views from Chantry Hill and towards the end near Annington Hill.
Lunch is had either in the village pub at Washington (an alternative route) or, as is the case here, after an appetite-building ascent to the ancient hill fort of Chanctonbury Ring. Here, walkers can enjoy some great 360 degree views whilst munching on their sarnies...
Thereafter, the walker enjoys further great views whilst slowly descending towards the River Adur and the riverside stroll into Shoreham.
Yet another delightful day's walking and some lovely weather!
