Allan Bloom gives his ''Thoughts on Machiavelli'' 1
In this series of lecture segments, if one has the patience and the time - and reads Machiavelli's text along with Bloom here - one will learn what it means to read a genuine masterpiece of political philosophy. The better one comes to know Machiavelli's text, the more use one will be able to make of Bloom's observations and thoughts. There is no useless academic scholarship here, no boring or moribund didacticism. Above all, no frivolously vain scholarly erudition: only Bloom and Machiavelli - a meeting of men. This series of lectures is simply unmatched. There is nothing more to say about it, until one has returned to it several times. (The total length is almost 4 hours long, or about 20 segments. These will be added gradually as time permits)

Audio Interview: Evan Sayet on 'The Kindergarden of Eden'
Evan Sayet caused quite a splash in 2007 with his speech at the Heritage Foundation, in which he told his audience that prior to 9/11, he was a television comedy writer, until hearing his fellow liberals admit that they thought America had it coming. The cognitive dissonance in these arguments caused Sayet to reevaluate his politics, and he became a self-declared "9/13 Republican:" www.youtube.com Since then, he has been refining his positions, and has a book in the works, scheduled to be completed early next year. But if you'd like read over half of it, as a sort of detailed work in progress, it's currently available on Evan's Website in e-book and dead tree format. Titled, The Kindergarden of Eden: How the Modern Liberal Thinks, it fits comfortably in the niche mined by Jonah Goldberg in Liberal Fascism and The Tyranny of Cliches. Or as Dwight Schultz blurbs on the cover of Evan's new book, "With this book, that spot between Allan Bloom and Thomas Sowell has now been filled." During our interview, Evan discusses: * The laws of modern liberalism and their corollaries, how he arrived at them. * Evan's epiphany occurred after hearing liberals say that America had it coming to her on September 11th. Do he think Barack Obama believes we had it coming on 9/11, as Rev. Wright said in no uncertain terms? * Evan's book features a quote from the late far left historian Howard Zinn: "Objectivity is impossible, and it is also undesirable. That is, if it were possible it would be ...

"To One In Paradise" (Edgar Allan Poe) / Oboe Concerto (Albinoni) / English Concert (Trevor Pinnock)
"To One in Paradise" was first published without a title as part of the short story "The Visionary" (later renamed "The Assignation"). It evolved into "To Ianthe in Heaven" and then into "To One Beloved" before being named "To One in Paradise" in the February 25, 1843 Saturday Museum. Modernist poet William Carlos Williams considered "To One In Paradise" one of his most preferred poems. (Text) Thou wast all that to me, love, For which my soul did pine- A green isle in the sea, love, A fountain and a shrine, All wreathed with fairy fruits and flowers, And all the flowers were mine. Ah, dream too bright to last! Ah, starry Hope! that didst arise But to be overcast! A voice from out the Future cries, "On! on!"- but o'er the Past (Dim gulf!) my spirit hovering lies Mute, motionless, aghast! For, alas! alas! me The light of Life is o'er! "No more- no more- no more-" (Such language holds the solemn sea To the sands upon the shore) Shall bloom the thunder-blasted tree Or the stricken eagle soar! And all my days are trances, And all my nightly dreams Are where thy grey eye glances, And where thy footstep gleams- In what ethereal dances, By what eternal streams. ************************************ Check out my Poe playlist: www.youtube.com ********************************************** *Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research ...

Alan Jackson: "Right Where I Want You" from GOOD TIME
From Alan's upcoming album, Good Time, in stores March 4. Pre-order at AlanJackson.com: www.alanjackson.com Superstar Alan Jackson is currently putting the finishing touches on Good Time, his new Arista Nashville album, slated for release on March 4, 2008. The Jackson-penned "Small Town Southern Man" is the disc's first single, and after only five weeks on the charts, it's fast become a country radio smash and the youngest record inside the Billboard country airplay Top 30. After releasing not one, but two chart-topping albums in 2006 (the multi-award winning inspirational collection, Precious Memories, and the acclaimed, Grammy-nominated Like Red on a Rose), Good Time returns the spotlight to Jackson as a songwriter, as well as a vocalist. The man who wrote 21 of his 31 #1 singles is the sole writer on all of the songs on Good Time, marking the first Jackson album to be written entirely by him. In addition to the title track and the first single, additional songs include the sweetly poignant "Sissy's Song" -- inspired by a friend who passed away, the nostalgic "1976," and the joys of being a "Country Boy." Good Time also reunites Jackson with longtime producer Keith Stegall, who produced or co-produced all but one of Jackson's previous albums. Concertgoers are already getting a taste of the new music to come, with the album's title track on Jackson's recent concert set list. First single "Small Town Southern Man" has consistently been among the most-added new songs at ...

Marco Goran Romano, Jérémie Decalf (Francia), Allan Deas (Inghilterra), Alberto Spada, Andrea Longhi, Dazee, Andrea Caimi Gray, Cristian Cornia, Francesco Furlan, Vanabio e l'argentino Juan Molinet.
______________________________________________________________________

Let a Thousand James Hugonin's Bloom
This would probably annoy the bejesus out of Hugonin. Sadly, this is not my concern, as this is another exercise set my Jamie Allan, my tutor. Obviously, if you've seen my last piece of work for him, you might be getting concerned that Jamie is actually running some form of art world Project Mayhem, and that all graduates of the DM course will be changing their name to Bob soon. This is probably not the case.
I am Pete's complete lack of surprise.
If your going to procedurally fake something, why just fake one? Therefore I set the program to stop cranking out fakes at a thousand. The colour's a bit off, as if Hugonin had suddenly found his Northumbrian idle surrounded by flesh tones, but it holds together. The video ends up being 8.20 long, with two "paintings" every second.

Turing's Cathedral
Google Tech Talks April, 9 2008 ABSTRACT New Light on the Dawn of Digital Computing, 1945-1958 The digital universe consists of two kinds of bits: differences in space and differences in time. Digital computers translate between these two forms of information--structure and sequence--according to definite rules. Sixty-three years ago, at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ, John von Neumann and a small group of nonconformists launched a project to do this at electronic speed. The resulting architecture and coding has descended directly to almost all computers now in use. Von Neumann succeeded in jump-starting the computer revolution by bringing engineers into the den of the mathematicians, rather than by bringing mathematicians into a den of engineers. The stored-program computer, as conceived by Alan Turing and delivered by John von Neumann, broke the distinction between numbers that *mean* things and numbers that *do* things. Our universe would never be the same. With a mere 5 kilobytes of random access memory, von Neumann and colleagues tackled previously intractable problems ranging from thermonuclear explosions, stellar evolution, and long-range weather forecasting to cellular automata, genetic coding, and the origins of life. Programs were small enough to be completely debugged, but hardware could not be counted on to perform consistently from one kilocycle to the next. This situation is now reversed.
