Alonei Abba

Alonei Abba (Hebrew: אַלּוֹנֵי אַבָּא‎‎, lit. Abba's Oaks) is a moshav shitufi, or semi-cooperative village, in northern Israel. It is located in the Lower Galilee near Bethlehem of Galilee and Alonim, in the hills east of Kiryat Tivon. Alonei Abba falls under the jurisdiction of the Jezreel Valley Regional Council. In 2006 it had a population of 387.
Alonei Abba was formerly known as Waldheim (German: "Forest Home"), a colony founded in 1907 by German Christians affiliated with the Prussian evangelical church on land purchased from the fellaheen village of Umm al-Amed. The purchase price of 170,000 francs was financed by a Haifa-based bank Darlehenskasse der deutschen evangelischen Gemeinde Haifa GmbH (Loan Bank of the Haifa Evangelical Congregation Ltd.) and completely refinanced by the Stuttgarter Gesellschaft zur Förderung der deutschen Ansiedlungen in Palästina (Stuttgart-based Company for the promotion of the German colonies in Palestine). The colony comprised 7,200,000 square meters (7,200 dunams).

Alonei Yitzhak
Alonei Yitzhak (Hebrew: אַלּוֹנֵי יִצְחָק‎‎, lit. Yitzhak Oaks) is a youth village in northern Israel. Located near Binyamina, it falls under the jurisdiction of Menashe Regional Council. In 2006 it had a population of 210.
The village was established in 1948 by Yehiel Harif to absorb children who had survived the Holocaust. It was named after Yitzhak Gruenbaum. Today the village is a boarding school that teaches 400 children from 7th to 12th grade.
A 31-acre nature reserve was declared in 1969, mainly of old Valonia oak trees (Quercus macrolepis), in close proximity to the youth village. Other flora in the oak forest includes Cyclamen persicum, Calicotome villosa, Ephedra, Sea Squill, and Asphodelus microcarpus.

Ashdod Sand Dune
Ashdod Nitzanim Sand Dune Park is a psammosere ecosystem located close to the city of Ashdod on the Israeli Coastal Plain near the Mediterranean sea. It is located south of Tel Aviv and represents the landscape on which most of modern-day Israel was constructed on by pioneers following various Aliyah's and the Establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.
Until a number of decades ago, sand dunes dominated the coast of Israel with 462 square kilometers of sand dunes of which over three-quarters were south of Tel Aviv. Over the last few decades the dunes have made way for cities, industrial areas and power plants, and the dune landscape has gradually disappeared. Thus, one of the most characteristic and important aspects of the Israeli landscape is rapidly vanishing.
The largest remnant of Israel's coastal sand dunes is located between Ashdod and Ashkelon. This is the only part of the landscape that still retains its shifting sands with its attendant animal and plant life and marks of bygone civilizations.

Avshalom Cave
Avshalom Cave (Hebrew: מערת אבשלום‎), also known as Soreq Cave or Stalactites Cave (Hebrew: מערת הנטיפים‎), is a 5,000 sq m cave on the western side of Mt.Ye'ela, in the Judean hills, in Israel, unique for its dense concentration of stalactites.
The cave was discovered accidentally in May 1968, while quarrying with explosives, near Hartuv, 3 km east of Bet Shemesh, Israel. It is 83 m long, 60 m wide, and 15 m high.
The cave is named after Avshalom Shoham, an Israeli soldier killed in the War of Attrition. After its discovery, the location of the cave was kept a secret for several years for fear of damage to its natural treasures.
The temperature and the humidity in the cave are constant year round, and it is now open to visitors, in the heart of the 67-dunam Avshalom Nature Reserve, declared in 1975.
Some of the stalactites found in the cave are four meters long, and some have been dated as 300,000 years old. Some meet stalagmites to form stone pillars.

Balfouria
Balfouria (Hebrew: בַּלפוּרְיָה‎‎) is a moshav in northern Israel, south of Nazareth. Located near Afula, it falls under the jurisdiction of Jezreel Valley Regional Council. In 2006 it had a population of 312.
The initial core of settlers had assembled in 1919 and began training for the establishment of an agricultural settlement. A tract of and was purchased with the funds of the American Zion Commonwealth, and Keren Hayesod acquired equipment. The moshav was founded in 1922, the third to be established in Palestine, and was named after Arthur James Balfour, writer of the Balfour Declaration (who consented to lending his name to the settlement), which embraced Zionist plans for a Jewish "national home". According to a Jewish National Fund publication of 1949, Balfouria was the first village to be founded in Palestine after the Balfour Declaration.
The founders were joined by former kibbutz residents, a number of people from the Co-operative in Merhavia, as well as many settlers from Petah Tikva. The houses and dairy barns built with the funds of the Commonwealth were of concrete and had shingled roofs, thus earning the settlers of Balfouria the sobriquet "the millionaires". Lord Balfour visited the moshav in 1925 and gave the settlers his blessings.

Bitan Aharon
Bitan Aharon (Hebrew: בִּיתַן אַהֲרֹן‎‎, lit. Aharon's Pavilion) is a moshav in central Israel. Located in the Sharon plain between Hadera and Netanya, it falls under the jurisdiction of Hefer Valley Regional Council. In 2006 it had a population of 213.
The moshav was founded in 1936. During its first years the members of the moshav hired workers to plant orange groves while its members lived in the cities. A decade later the village became more developed with new settlers joining. In 1947 it had a population of 100. The village was named after Aharon Freeman, a Canadian Zionist activist.
A 46-dunam nature reserve was declared in 1968, just east of the moshav. The reserve covers part of the second (middle) Kurkar ridge that runs on a north-south axis in this part of the Israeli coastal plain, and therefore includes a number of ancient rock-hewn tombs and burial caves. Flora includes Ziziphus spina-christi and Pancratium parviflorum.

Bnei Zion
Bnei Zion (Hebrew: בְּנֵי צִיּוֹן‎‎, lit. Sons of Zion) is a moshav in central Israel. Located in the Sharon plain around four and a half kilometres north of Ra'anana, it falls under the jurisdiction of Hof HaSharon Regional Council. In 2007 it had a population of 1,000.
The village was established on 27 March 1947 by the Jewish Agency, and was initially called Gva'ot Ra'anana (Hebrew: גבעות רעננה‎, lit. Ra'anana Hills) before being renamed after Bnai Zion, the American organisation which helped found it.
Just west of the moshav is a 100-dunam nature reserve, declared in 1968. The reserve is a remnant of the natural state of the Sharon plain, rich in flora that grows well in iron-rich soil.

Eilat
Eilat (Hebrew: אֵילַת‎‎, Arabic: إيلات‎ (audio) (help·info)) is Israel's southernmost city, a busy port as well as a popular resort, located at the northern tip of the Red Sea, on the Gulf of Aqaba. Home to 46,600 people, the city is part of the Southern Negev Desert, at the southern end of the Arava. The city is adjacent to the Egyptian village of Taba to the south, the Jordanian port city of Aqaba to the east, and within sight of Saudi Arabia to the south-east, across the gulf. Eilat's arid desert climate and low humidity is moderated by proximity to a warm sea. Temperatures often exceed 40 °C (104 °F) in summer, and 21 °C (70 °F) in winter, while water temperatures range between 20 and 26 °C (68 and 79 °F). Eilat averages up to 360 sunny days a year. The city's beaches, nightlife and desert landscapes make it a popular destination for domestic and international tourism.
The geology and landscape are varied: igneous and metamorphic rocks, sandstone and limestone; mountains up to 892 metres (2,927 ft) above sea level; broad valleys such as the Arava, and seashore on the Gulf of Aqaba. With an annual average rainfall of 28 millimetres (1.1 in) and summer temperatures of 40 °C (104 °F) and higher, water resources and vegetation are limited. "The main elements that influenced the region's history were the copper resources and other minerals, the ancient international roads that crossed the area, and its geopolitical and strategic position. These resulted in a settlement density that defies the environmental conditions."

Ein Gedi (Hebrew: עֵין גֶּדִי‎‎) is an oasis in Israel, located west of the Dead Sea, near Masada and the caves of Qumran.
The name Ein Gedi is composed of two Hebrew words: ein means spring and gdi means goat-kid. En Gedi thus means "Kid spring."
In the 2 Chronicles 20:2 it is identified with Hazazon-tamar, where the Moabites and Ammonites gathered in order to fight Josaphat. In Genesis 14:7 Hazazon-tamar is mentioned as being a Amorite city, smitten by Chedorlaomer in his war against the cities of the plain.
In Joshua 15:62, Ein Gedi is enumerated among the cities of the Tribe of Judah in the desert Betharaba, but Ezekiel 47:10 shows that it was also a fisherman's town. Later, King David hides in the desert of Ein Gedi (1 Samuel 24:1-2) and King Saul seeks him "even upon the most craggy rocks, which are accessible only to wild goats" (1 Samuel 24:3).
The Song of Songs (Songs 1:14) speaks of the "vineyards of En Gedi." The words of Ecclesiasticus 24:18, "I was exalted like a palm tree in Cades" (’en aígialoîs), may perhaps be understood of the palm trees of Ein Gedi.

Ein Hemed
Ein Hemed is a national park and nature reserve in the hills seven kilometers west of Jerusalem, Israel. It is also known by its Latin name Aqua Bella. The park is located on the path of an old Roman road, also used in later periods, called Emmaus by the Crusaders. The road connected the coastal plain with the Jerusalem hills.
The Kingdom of Jerusalem build fortresses along the road to Jerusalem in order to control the traffic to Jerusalem, and protect pilgrims visiting the Holy City. Farms were built using the spring water for irrigation. Impressive ruins of a 30x40 meter Crusader structure, whose southern wall survives to a height of 12 meters, are located on the north site of the riverbed. The building has several gates and two arched halls. The building was known in Arabic as Deir al Benat (Monastery of the Daughters). Archeological investigations indicate that it was built in 1140-1160, during the reign of Fulk of Jerusalem, in the same period as the fortresses on Tzova and Emmaus. South of the building are a nature reserve and a Muslim cemetery.

Ein Nymphit
Ein Nymphit (עין נמפית, lit. Nymphit Spring) is a small nature reserve northwest of Tel Afek, south of Kfar Masaryk. It contains a perrenial spring that produces clean clear water. The water flows from the spring to Nahal Na'aman, filling some pools on the way. The spring is named for the Nymphaea caerulea that grows nearby.

Gamla nature reserve
Gamla nature reserve is a nature reserve and archaeological site located in the center of the Golan Heights, about 20 km south to the Israeli settlement Katzrin.
The nature reserve has two streams - the Gamla stream and the Daliot stream - the highest waterfall in Israel and the Israeli occupied territories (51 meters high), a Dolmen field containing about 700 dolmens, the largest nesting colony of Eagles in Israel and the Israeli occupied territories, a variety of wild life and different wild plants - especially birds of prey as well as the ancient city of Gamla.
The reserve also has a monument for the Jewish Golan Heights settlers whom were killed during the Israeli wars and as a result of terror attacks.^{[citation needed]} The reserve also has remains of an ancient village from the Byzantine period.

HaMakhtesh HaGadol

HaMakhtesh HaGadol (Hebrew: הַמַּכְתֵּשׁ הַגָּדוֹל‎‎, lit. The Big Crater) is a makhtesh, a geological erosional landform of Israel's Negev desert. It measures 5 x 10 km.
A makhtesh has steep walls of resistant rock surrounding a deep closed valley. One of five makhteshim in Israel and seven in the world, HaMakhtesh HaGadol is the second largest, being exceptional in that it is drained by one river, Nahal Hatira. Makatesh Gadol was discovered and named before Makhtesh Ramon which is the largest Makhtesh in Israel.
HaMakhtesh HaGadol is near Yeruham, Israel's first development town, established in the early days of the state. The location was chosen because the region was thought to be rich in natural resources.

HaMakhtesh HaKatan (Hebrew: הַמַּכְתֵּשׁ הַקָּטָן‎‎, lit. The Small Crater) is a makhtesh, a geological erosional landform of Israel's Negev desert. One of five makhteshim in Israel, and seven in the world, it is the third largest in Israel at 5 km by 7 km. It was charted in 1942 by Jewish explorers.

Hasbani River
The Hasbani River (Arabic: الحاصباني‎ / ALA-LC: al-Ḥāṣbānī; Hebrew: נחל שניר‎ / Nahal Snir), also known as Snir Stream within Israel, is a tributary of the Jordan river. The Hasbani River derives most of its discharge from two springs in Lebanon, the Wazzani and the Haqzbieh, the latter being a group of springs on the uppermost Hasbani. The Hasbani runs for 25 miles in Lebanon before crossing the border and joining with the Banias and Dan Rivers at a point in northern Israel, to form the River Jordan. For about four kilometers downstream of Ghajar, the Hasbani forms the border between Lebanon.
The Wazzani's and the Haqzbieh's combined discharge averages 138 million m³ per year. About 20% of the Hasbani flow emerges from the Wazzani Spring at Ghajar, close to the Lebanese Israeli border, about 3 kilometers west of the base of Mount Hermon. The contribution of the Wazzani spring is very important, since this is the only continuous year-round flow in to the river, in either Lebanon or Israel.

Hula Valley
The Hula Valley (Hebrew: עמק החולה‎, Emek HaHula, also transliterated as Huleh Valley) is an agricultural region in northern Israel with abundant fresh water. It is a major stopover for birds migrating along the Syrian-African Rift Valley between Africa, Europe, and Asia. The marshland around Lake Hula, a breeding grounds for malaria, was drained in the 1950s. A small section of the valley was later reflooded in an attempt to revive a nearly extinct ecosystem. An estimated 500 million migrating birds now pass through the Hula Lake Park every year.
Lake Hula was historically referred to by different names. The 14th century BCE Egyptians called the lake Samchuna, while the Hebrew Bible records it as Merom. In the 1st century CE, the Jewish-Roman historian Flavius Josephus termed it Semechonitis, while in the Talmud it is called Yam Sumchi - i.e. Sea of Sumchi. Currently the lake is called Buheirat el Huleh in Arabic and Agam ha-Hula in Hebrew, stemming from the Aramaic Hulata or Ulata. The "Waters of Merom" has sometimes been used in scientific literature, although that term refers specifically to springs on the western side of the valley.

Hurshat Tal
Hurshat Tal (Hebrew: חורשת טל‎, lit. "Dew Grove") is a national park and nature reserve in the North District of Israel. In 1968, 765 dunams were declared national park lands (visitor facilities occupying approximately 250 dunams) and 107 dunams were declared a nature reserve.
Hurshat Tal is located on Highway 99, east of Kiryat Shmona, in the northern part of the Hula Valley. The recreation and camping grounds offer bungalos and cabins. A flowing streams branching from the Dan River, crosses the site, and a swimming pool with water slides is fed by these waters. A fishing park is also open to visitors.
The Hebrew name of the site is taken from Psalms 133:3 referring to the "dew of Hermon".
The reserve was declared mainly to protect the 240 old Valonia oak trees (Quercus macrolepis). These trees survived for many years as part of a local Arab holy site. Some of the trees are 350-400 years old. Local folklore tells that 10 of Muhammad's cohorts stopped nearby to rest, but could not find trees to which to tie their horses. They stuck their sticks into the ground, which became the roots of the trees in the area. The story is reflected in the Arabic name for the site, Sejrat el-Asara ("Grove of the Ten").

Following the adoption of a resolution by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 29 November 1947 recommending the adoption and implementation of the United Nations plan to partition Palestine, on 14 May 1948 David Ben-Gurion, the Executive Head of the World Zionist Organization and president of the Jewish Agency for Palestine, declared the establishment of a Jewish state in Eretz Israel, to be known as the State of Israel, a state independent from the British Mandate for Palestine. Neighboring Arab states invaded the next day in support of the Palestinian Arabs. Israel has since fought several wars with neighboring Arab states, in the course of which it has occupied the West Bank, Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip and the Golan Heights. Portions of these territories, including east Jerusalem, have been annexed by Israel, but the border with the neighboring West Bank has not yet been permanently defined.^{[neutrality is disputed]} Israel has signed peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan, but efforts to resolve the Israeli–Palestinian conflict have so far not resulted in peace.

Jezreel Valley
The Jezreel Valley (Hebrew: עמק יזרעאל‎, Emek Yizre'el) (Arabic: مرج ابن عامر‎, Marǧ Ibn Amer) is a large fertile plain and inland valley south of the Lower Galilee region in Israel and West Bank in Palestinian Territories. The Samarian highlands and Mount Gilboa border the valley from the south and the northern outskirts of the West Bank cities of Jenin and Tulkarm have spread into the southern part of the valley. To the west is the Mount Carmel range, and to the east is the Jordan Valley.
The Jezreel Valley takes its name from the ancient city of Jezreel (known in Arabic as Zir'in; Arabic: زرعين‎) which was located on a low hill overlooking the southern edge of the valley, though some scholars think that the name of the city originates from the name of the clan which founded it, and whose existence is mentioned in the Merneptah stele. The word Jezreel means "God sows" or "El sows". The phrase "valley of Jezreel" was sometimes used to refer to the central part of the valley, around the city of Jezreel, while the southwestern portion was known as the "valley of Megiddo", after the ancient city of Megiddo, which was located there. The area has been known as the Plain of Esdraelon (Esdraelon is the Koine Greek rendering of Jezreel).

Kerem Ben Zimra
Kerem Ben Zimra (Hebrew: כֶּרֶם בֶּן זִמְרָה‎‎) is a moshav near Safed in the Upper Galilee in northern Israel. It belongs to the Merom HaGalil Regional Council.
The Arab village Al-Ras al-Ahmar on the site was depopulated in 1948. The moshav was founded in 1949 by immigrants to Israel from Turkey, to whom immigrants were added from Romania and Morocco. Rabbi Meir Yehuda Getz (1924–1995), a kabbalist and the first rabbi of the Western Wall in Jerusalem, was among the founders of the moshav. The moshav is named after Rabbi David Ben Zimra, who was buried with his father Yosef near the moshav.
In 1968 a 68-dunam nature reserve was declared on the land south of the moshav. Flora includes Mt. Atlas mastic trees, Valonia oaks, Palestine Oaks, Buckthorns, and Styrax officinalis.

Makhtesh Ramon

Makhtesh Ramon (Hebrew: מכתש רמון‎‎; lit. Ramon Crater/Makhtesh) is a geological feature of Israel's Negev desert. Located at the peak of Mount Negev, some 85 km south of the city of Beersheba, the landform is not actually an impact crater from a meteor, but rather is the world's largest makhtesh. The crater is 40 km long, 2–10 km wide and 500 meters deep, and is shaped like an elongated heart. The only settlement in the area is the small town of Mitzpe Ramon (מצפה רמון, "Ramon Observation Point") located on the northern edge of the crater. Today the crater and surrounding area forms Israel's largest national park, the Ramon Nature Reserve.
Hundreds of millions of years ago, the Negev desert was covered by an ocean. Slowly, this started to recede northwards leaving behind a hump-shaped hill. The hump was slowly flattened by water and climatic forces. Approximately five million years ago, the Arava Rift Valley was formed, with rivers changing their courses, carving out the inside of the crater which was a softer rock than that overlying. The crater bottom continued to deepen at a much faster rate than the surrounding walls, which gradually increased in height. As the crater deepened, more layers of ancient rock were exposed with rocks at the bottom of the crater being up to 200 million years old. Today, the crater is 500m deep with the deepest point being Ein Saharonim (Saharonim Spring) which also contains the makhtesh's only natural water source which sustain much of the wildlife in the makhtesh including onagers and ibex.

Maoz Haim
Maoz Haim (Hebrew: מָעוֹז חַיִּים‎‎, lit. Haim's Fortress) is a kibbutz in Israel. Established in 1937 by immigrants from Poland and Germany, it is located off the Jordan River in the Beit She'an valley and falls under the jurisdiction of Valley of Springs Regional Council. It is named after Haim Shturman, a member of the Hagana, who was killed there in 1938.
There are currently some hundreds inhabitants living in the kibbutz. Aside from agriculture, the kibbutz also has a plastics factory, "Poliraz".
South of the kibbutz is a small (11 dunam) nature reserve of Balanites aegyptiaca trees, called the Hurshat Zakum (Maoz Haim) reserve, declared in 1968. (Zakum being the Hebrew name of the tree.) This is probably the northern-most occurrence of these trees in the world.

Meirav
Meirav (Hebrew: מֵירַב‎‎) or Merav is a religious kibbutz located on the downward slopes of Mount Gilboa in Israel. Located about ten kilometres southwest of Beit She'an and less than 500 metres from the Green Line, it falls under the jurisdiction of Valley of Springs Regional Council (Hebrew: מועצה אזורית עמק המעיינות‎‎‎, Mo'atza Azorit Emeq Hamaayanot), known until 2008 as the Beit She'an Valley Regional Council.
The kibbutz was founded initially as a Nahal settlement on Mount Malkishua in 1982, and is the newest religious kibbutz in the country. In 1987 it moved to its current location on Mount Avinadav.
Meirav is located just south of another religious kibbutz, Ma'ale Gilboa. As they are both religious kibbutzim, it was decided that although they are located in the Gilboa mountains (and would naturally fall under the jurisdiction of Gilboa Regional Council), it would be better to include them in Beit She'an Valley Regional Council, where there is a group of religious kibbutzim, including Ein HaNatziv, Sde Eliyahu, Shluhot and Tirat Zvi.

Mount Gilboa
Mount Gilboa (Hebrew: הר הגלבוע‎, Har haGilboa'; Arabic: جبال فقوعة‎ Jabal Faqu'a) is a mountain range overlooking the Jezreel Valley in northern Israel.
In the Bible, King Saul, Israel’s first monarch, led a charge against the Philistines at Mount Gilboa. The battle ends with the king falling on his own sword and Jonathan being killed in battle. David, who returns to the site after the battle, curses the mountain: “Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew nor rain upon you, neither fields of choice fruits; for there the shield of the mighty was vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, not anointed with oil” (II Samuel 1:21)
The formation extends from southeast to northwest, bordering the highlands of the West Bank and the Beit She'an valley. The Green Line between Israel and the West Bank runs south and west of the ridge.
Every year, Irus Ha-Gilboa, a purple iris, blooms on the mountain. Two nature reserves have been declared on the Gilboa ridge; The Irus Ha-Gilboa nature reserve in 1970, covering 7,280 dunams (728 ha) and the eastern Gilboa reserve in 2005, covering 18,290 dunams (1,829 ha).

Nahal Ayun

Nahal Ayun (Hebrew: נחל עיון‎, lit. Ayun Stream), is a perennial stream in the Galilee Panhandle, Israel. The stream originates from the springs in the Marjayoun valley in southern Lebanon, and runs southward for seven kilometers in various irrigation ditches, until flowing into Israel near Metulla, as a tributary of the Jordan River in the Hula Valley.
Differences in altitude form waterfalls in the streams course. During the rainy winter months, the water-flow is strongest. During the summer months, water is diverted, closer to the stream's sources, for crop irrigation. These falls were declared a nature reserve, and include:
Tree types in the reserve include Pistacia palaestina, Rhamnus palaestinus, and Acer obtusifolium Maples. Other growth includes Spanish Broom, Rubus, Cyclamen persicum, and Anemones.
Grey Wagtails can be found during the winter months, as well as White-throated Kingfishers and Common Kestrels.

Nahal Kziv

Nahal Kziv (Hebrew: נחל כזיב‎) (lit. "Kziv stream") is a 20-kilometer long perennial stream in the Upper Galilee, Israel. During the winter, rainfall fills the channel, and springs along the riverbed add to the flow. Currently, Mekorot (the national water company) pumps the water of the river's principal spring, Ein Ziv, and supplies it to the residents of the Western Galilee, making the channel between Ein Ziv and Ein Tamir an intermittent stream. On the ridge above the valley sits a 12th century Crusader castle, Montfort.
Nahal Kziv flows from the western side of Mount Meron near Beit Jann, westward to its estuary, north of and Achziv. It is the longest stream in the Galilee, with the widest drainage basin. The channel passes nearby Hurfeish, Abirim, Mi'ilya, Mitzpe Hila, Neve Ziv, Goren, Manot, and Ma'alot-Tarshiha. Springs along the channel include:
Most of the stream is part of a nature reserve that bears its name, and includes the Montfort Castle and other Crusader-period ruins. A stone carving of a man, 1.78 m high can be found near where the Abirim stream empties into Nahal Kziv. The carving is thought to date from the Hellenistic period.

Nahal Poleg
Nahal Poleg is a stream in the Sharon plain in Israel that empties into the Mediterranean Sea between Netanya and the Wingate Institute.
The stream starts between Tira and Ramat HaKovesh, east of Mishmeret. It runs west to the sea, veering north at Batzra. It is mostly intermittent, and becomes a Perennial stream towards its end. There is a man-made opening in the Kurkar ridge that runs south-north along the coastal plain.
The nearby Tel Poleg archaeological site, was excavated, revealing a fortified city of the Middle Bronze Age. The site has mostly been destroyed by a modern quarry. The original opening in the kurkar ridge was made in the Bronze Age, and reopened during the Roman period. By the thirteenth century CE, the opening was clogged, resulting in a 4000-dunam marsh. The opening was cleared again in 1935, and the stream's current course was set in the area east of the kurkar ridge.
The Nahal Poleg nature reserve is situated between the Wingate Institute and Ramat Poleg, between Highway 2 and the Mediterranean. It covers 500 dunams, and was declared a reserve in 1971.

Nahal Sorek
Nahal Sorek (Hebrew: נחל שורק‎, lit. Brook of Sorek), also Soreq, is one of the largest, most important drainage basins in the Judean Hills. It is mentioned in the Book of Judges 16:4 of the Bible as the border between the ancient Philistines and the Tribe of Dan of the ancient Israelites. It is known in Arabic as Wadi Surar.
The Midrash (Numbers Rabbah 9) states that the sorek is a "fruitless tree" (the word רק req means "empty" in Hebrew), implying a moral lesson and metaphor suggesting that Samson's involvement in his affair with Delilah was eventually "fruitless". However, another etymology suggests that "sorek" means "special vine" and refers to the grapes and wines grown in the area.
Nahal Sorek was the place where Delilah lived, and Samson came to meet her for the first time. It was also the place she enticed him to tell her the secret of his strength, and where he was eventually captured by the Philistines:
In the 19th century, Nahal Sorek served as an important waterway between the two major cities in the area, Jaffa and Jerusalem. Because railways at the time were reliant on water sources, several surveyors who planned the first railway in the Middle East, the Jaffa–Jerusalem line, decided to use Nahal Sorek as the main route for the line.

Nahal Taninim
Nahal Taninim (Hebrew: נחל תנינים‎, lit. Crocodile Stream) is a river in Israel, originating near Ramot Menashe and emptying into the Mediterranean Sea south of Ma'agan Michael. The Arabic name for this river is Wadi a-Zarka.
The area of the basin and its tributaries is about 200 square kilometers, including the Taninim, Ada, Barkan, Alona and Mishmarot streams. Nahal Taninim is the cleanest of Israel’s coastal rivers. Three waterways meet in Nahal Taninim: the natural stream, a Roman aqueduct extending from the Zabrin springs to Caesarea, and Mifale Menashe, the waterworks that collect surface runoff water and springwater, routing it into the subterranean water table.
The dense undergrowth and reeds along Nahal Taninim are home to many different birds, among them waterside warblers and other songbirds.
According to a Tel Aviv University zoologist, the name derives from sightings of crocodiles and hippopotamuses by priests and pilgrims who trekked through the swamps three centuries ago.

The stream starts in the hills of Nazareth, east of the city, and runs east and south of Mount Tabor, where it turns east and then empties into the Jordan River between Gesher and Belvoir Fortress.
Three springs feed the stream within the boundaries of the Nahal Tavor Nature Reserve; Ein Rechesh, Ein Ze'ev, and Ein Shachal. Ein Rechesh is near Tel Rechesh, an archeological tel thought to be Anaharath, a town mentioned in the description of one of Thutmose III's campaigns, and also in Joshua 19:19, describing the allotment of the Tribe of Issachar.
Near kibbutz Gazit, the stream runs through a Basalt canyon.
The Tabor Stream received nature reserve status in 1974.
The Nature reserve encompasses the stream from the area near Kfar Kish up to Highway 90.
Flora includes Tamarix, Willow, Ziziphus spina-christi, Pistacia atlantica, Faidherbia albida, and Prunus korshinskyi trees. Many wildflowers grow during the winter months, such as Lupins (Lupinus pilosus), Cyclamen persicum, Anemones, Chives, and Asafoetida.

Neot Kedumim
Neot Kedumim (Hebrew: נאות קדומים‎) (lit. Beauties of Ancient Times) is a Biblical garden and nature preserve located near Modi'in, mid-way between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, Israel. It is a unique endeavor to re-create the physical setting of the Bible.
The park covers an area of about 2,500 dunams. The idea of planting such a garden dates back to 1925. In 1964, land was allocated for the project with the help of Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion.
Neot Kedumim features a series of natural and agricultural landscapes, among them the Forest of Milk and Honey, the Dale of the Song of Songs, Isaiah's Vineyard and the Fields of the Seven Species. Signs are posted throughout the garden quoting relevant Jewish texts in Hebrew and English.
In 1994, Neot Kedumim and Israeli botanist Noga Hareuveni, the driving spirit behind the garden, were awarded the Israel Prize for their special contribution to society and the State of Israel.

The tel rises 60 meters above its surroundings, north-east of moshav Nahalal, on the border between the Lower Galilee, and the Jezreel Valley. Today the tel in not settled, Timrat was established alongside, to the east.
Shimron was one of the Bronze Age fortified Canaanite cities that controlled the Jezreel Valley, possibly the largest of them. All of these cities were located at an entrance to the valley, and controlled one of the roads leading into it.
In the Amarna letters and the Execration texts, the city is referred to as Shim'on. In the bible, it is mentioned as one of the cities that were attacked by Joshua (Joshua 12:20), and also as belonging to the Tribe of Zebulun (Joshua 19:15).

Tel Afek
Tel Afek, (Hebrew: תל אפק‎), also spelled Aphek, is an archaeological site located in the coastal hinterland of the Ein Afek Nature Reserve, east of Kiryat Bialik, Israel.
The site is what remains of the biblical town of Aphik, which is mentioned in the Joshua 19:30 as belonging to the Tribe of Asher. The name is apparently derived from the nearby abundant springs (אפיקים afikim in Hebrew).
Earliest known remains date from the Middle Bronze Age, when massive walls were built. The site continued to be in use during the Iron Age.
In the Hellenistic period the city expanded northwards, and grew into a large area that reached the springs, and the city continued to be in use in the Roman period.
In Crusader times, the northern area was fortified to protect the route to Nazareth. A two-story fortress still stands. A water-powered flour mill operated on the lower floor.
The Ein Afek nature reserve, declared in 1979, covers 366 dunams. An additional 300 dunams were declared in 1994. The highlights of the park include the Crusader fortress and the natural water canals and lake, which draw their waters from the year-long flowing springs of Afek, which are the source of the Naaman river.

Tel Shikmona (Hebrew: תל שִׁקְמוֹנָה‎‎) is an ancient tell (mound) situated near the sea coast on the southern entrance to the modern city of Haifa, Israel.
Archaeological excavations that took place at this location in 1963, uncovered the remains of a city that existed there between the 11th - 14th BCE and was intermittently inhabited during the Byzantine period.
The Israeli National Institute of Oceanography is situated at Shikmona.
Shikmona was declared a 1677-dunam nature reserve in 2008. A small area (73 dunams) was declared a national park, as well.

Tel Yitzhak
Tel Yitzhak (Hebrew: תֵּל יִצְחָק‎‎, lit. Yitzhak Hill) is a kibbutz in central Israel. Located in the coastal plain to the south-east of Netanya, it falls under the jurisdiction of Hof HaSharon Regional Council. In 2006 it had a population of 851.
The kibbutz was established in 1938 by immigrants from Galicia as part of the tower and stockade settlement programme. It was named after Yitzhak Steiger, a leader of Hanoar Hatzioni in Galicia.
South-west of the kibbutz is a tiny (8-dunam) nature reserve, declared in 1968, to preserve some of the original foliage of the Sharon plain. Flora includes Carob trees, Calicotome villosa, Thymelaea hirsuta, Prasium majus, Anagyris, and Lavender.

Timna valley
The Timna Valley is located in southern Israel in the southwestern Arabah, approximately 30 km (18.6 mi) north of the Gulf of Aqaba and the town of Eilat. The area is rich in copper ore, and has been actively mined by humans since the 6th millennium BCE.
The Egyptians discovered copper ore as early as the 5th millennium BCE, in the Neolithic period, and began the world’s first copper production center in Timna valley. The remains the Egyptians and others left provided for the most extensive example of early mining of any kind in history. During the 14th century BCE, the Egyptians established a trade route through Timna Valley as the surrounding areas heard about the copper-rich area. At the same time the Midianites from the northwestern Arabian Peninsula and local Amalekites began mining alongside the Egyptians. The Egyptian control of the mines declined in the 12th century BCE, but the Midianites stayed. Their advanced culture left thousands of ceremonial artifacts and the Temple of Hathor, a treasured relic. Mining continued by the Israelites and Nabateans through the Roman period and the 1st and 2nd centuries CE, and then by the Ummayads from the Arabian Peninsula after the Arab conquest (in the 7th century CE) until the copper ore became scarce. Timna Valley was also home to the beginning of the technological revolution, when people started using metal in daily life. Egyptians used metal chisels and hoes to mine and made tubular shafts with footholds in the walls to move down as far as 30 meters to reach the copper, all revolutionary methods for the time.

Udim

Udim (Hebrew: אוּדִים‎‎, lit. Firebrands) is a moshav in central Israel. Located near Netanya, it falls under the jurisdiction of Hof HaSharon Regional Council. In 2006 it had a population of 822.
The moshav was established in 1948 by Holocaust survivors. Its name is taken from Zechariah 3:2, and symbolises the fact that the founders were survivors of the Holocaust;

Mount Gilboa (Hebrew: הר הגלבוע‎, Har haGilboa'; Arabic: جبال فقوعة‎ Jabal Faqu'a) is a mountain range overlooking the Jezreel Valley in northern Israel.

In the Bible, King Saul, Israel’s first monarch, led a charge against the Philistines at Mount Gilboa. The battle ends with the king falling on his own sword and Jonathan being killed in battle. David, who returns to the site after the battle, curses the mountain: “Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew nor rain upon you, neither fields of choice fruits; for there the shield of the mighty was vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, not anointed with oil” (II Samuel 1:21)^[1]

The formation extends from southeast to northwest, bordering the highlands of the West Bank and the Beit She'an valley. The Green Line between Israel and the West Bank runs south and west of the ridge.

Flora and fauna [link]

Gilboa iris

Every year, Irus Ha-Gilboa, a purple iris, blooms on the mountain. Two nature reserves have been declared on the Gilboa ridge; The Irus Ha-Gilboa nature reserve in 1970, covering 7,280 dunams (728 ha) and the eastern Gilboa reserve in 2005, covering 18,290 dunams (1,829 ha).^[2]
