Armitage Gone! Dance - Drastic-Classicism (1981, revised 2009)
Drastic-Classicism (1981/2009)
Choreography: Karole Armitage
Original Score: Rhys Chatham, Drastic Classicism
Lighting Design: Clifton Taylor
Costumes: Peter Speliopoulos and Karen Young
Guitarists: Tom Gerke, Steve Gunn, Sarah Lipstate, Matt Mottel
Drummer: Kevin Shea
The first incarnation of Drastic-Classicism had a cast of seven dancers, a drummer and four guitarists. The opening three movements were performed and then, after an intermission, the same three movements were repeated in new costumes with everyone free to improvise on the material. For the revival, the repeat has been eliminated but some of the improvisation remains.
This is an excerpt from the 2nd movement of Drastic-Classicism performed by Armitage Gone! Dance at The Kitchen in NYC.

Trace the rebirth of classical beauty and order between World War I and II. Following the chaos of World War I, many artists found solace in traditional ideals such as purity, moderation, and the perfection of the human form. With over 150 works by 80 artists, including Balthus, Giorgio de Chirico, Jean Cocteau, Otto Dix, Hannah Höch, Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Pablo Picasso, and August Sander, the exhibition explores this powerful spirit of renewal in painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, film, fashion, and decorative arts.
This exhibition is made possible by support from the National Endowment for the Arts and The David Berg Foundation.
