Toponymy is the scientific study of place names (toponyms), their origins, meanings, use and typology. The word "toponymy" is derived from the Greek words tópos (τόπος) ("place") and ónoma (ὄνομα) ("name"). Toponymy is itself a branch of onomastics, the study of names of all kinds. Toponymy is distinct from (though often confused with) etymology, which is the study of the origins of words.

Toponymists[link]

A toponymist is one who studies toponymy. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word "toponymy" first appeared in English in 1876; since then, toponym has come to replace "place-name" in professional discourse among toponymists. It can be argued that the first toponymists were the storytellers and poets who explained the origin of specific place names as part of their tales; sometimes place-names served as the basis for the etiological legends. The process of folk etymology usually took over, whereby a false meaning was extracted from a name based on its structure or sounds. Thus, the toponym of Hellespont was explained by Greek poets as being named after Helle, daughter of Athamas, who drowned here as she crossed it with her brother Phrixus on a flying golden ram. The name, however, is probably derived from an older language, such as Pelasgian, which was unknown to those who explained its origin. George R. Stewart theorized, in his book Names on the Globe, that Hellespont originally meant something like "narrow Pontus" or "entrance to Pontus," "Pontus" being an ancient name for the region around the Black Sea, and by extension, for the sea itself.^[1]

Place names provide the most useful geographical reference system in the world. Consistency and accuracy are essential in referring to a place to prevent confusion in everyday business and recreation. A toponymist, through well-established local principles and procedures developed in cooperation and consultation with the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN), applies the science of toponymy to establish officially recognized geographical names. A toponymist relies not only on maps and local histories, but interviews with local residents to determine names with established local usage. The exact application of a toponym, its specific language, its pronunciation, and its origins and meaning are all important facts to be recorded during name surveys.

Scholars have found that toponyms provide valuable insight into the historical geography of a particular region. In 1954 F. M. Powicke said of place-name study that it "uses, enriches and tests the discoveries of archaeology and history and the rules of the philologists."^[2] Toponyms not only illustrate ethnic settlement patterns, but they can also help identify discrete periods of immigration.^[3][4]

Toponymists are responsible for the active preservation of their region's culture through its toponymy. They typically ensure the ongoing development of a geographical names data base and associated publications, for recording and disseminating authoritative hard-copy and digital toponymic data. This data may be disseminated in a wide variety of formats, including digital (Geographical Information Systems & Google Map formats) and hard-copy topographic maps.

Jonathan Antoine and Charlotte Jaconelli, known collectively as Jonathan and Charlotte, are an opera duo. They finished as runners-up in the sixth series of Britain's Got Talent in 2012, being beaten to the winning post on 12 May by dancing dog act Ashleigh and Pudsey.^[1] At the time, they were aged 17 and 16 respectively.

They began the contest as "Charlotte and Jonathan," but after Simon Cowell advised Jonathan to "dump" Charlotte, the act's name reversed.^[2] Fans expressed disappointment that the duo did not win, but Charlotte responded by saying, "Oh my god we came second out of 70,000 people, it's incredible, it's been amazing."^[3]

It was confirmed the day after (13 May 2012), that Simon Cowell was in negotiations to offer the duo a £1 million recording contract. They said they would be pleased to accept the contract, although also want to do some musical theatre in the future. The pair have now been offered a contract, with their first album due out just before Christmas.^[4]

Ashleigh and Pudsey are a British dog trick act, comprising trainer Ashleigh Butler, from Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, and Pudsey, a six-year old Border Collie, Bichon Frise and Chinese Crested cross.^[1] On 12 May 2012, they won the sixth series of the television talent show Britain's Got Talent, becoming the first ever dog trick act to win the competition.^[1][2] Ashleigh and Pudsey beat Jonathan and Charlotte in the final, having received the most votes from the public in a telephone phone-in, winning by 14% of the vote.^[3]

On 2 June 2012 Ashleigh and Pudsey performed at Epsom Downs Racecourse in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.^[4][5] In the same month Ashleigh and Pudsey began fronting a PETA campaign calling for a ban on animal cruelty in circuses.^[6][7] They performed on America's Got Talent on 18 July 2012.^[8]

Ashleigh and Pudsey are scheduled to perform at the 84th Royal Variety Performance in December 2012 in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II.^[9] This year Ashleigh and Pudsey are performing at the New Victoria Theatre Woking in Dick Whittington along side Stephen Mulhern.

The fifth series of Britain's Got Talent was broadcast on ITV between 16 April and 4 June 2011. After initial rounds of auditions, forty semi-finalists were chosen to perform across five live shows, with eight appearing in each of the semi-finals. The act from each show who received the highest number of public votes went through to the final automatically. They were joined by either the second or third placed act, with the four judges declaring who they wanted to go through. In the event of a tie, the second finalist was determined by the public vote.

Each of the acts performed again in the final on 4 June 2011. Jai McDowall won the competition after finishing with the highest number of public votes. Ronan Parke finished in second place, with the difference in the votes being 2.5% between the first and second place contestants. Singing group New Bounce finished in third place, followed by dancer Razy Gogonea and singer/guitarist Michael Collings. Paul Gbegbaje (6th), Les Gibson (9th), Steven Hall (7th), James Hobley (8th), and Jean Martyn (10th) were the other finalists.

Jai McDowall[link]

Jai McDowall (born 24th July 1986), aged 24 at the time of the show, was a support worker^[1] from Tarbolton in Ayrshire. Scotland^[2] He entered the competition as a singer, and although he had been singing for many years he had not received any professional vocal coaching.^{[citation needed]} He was a member of Ayr Amateur Opera Company and Loudoun Music Society.^[3] He played roles such as Frank in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Motel in Fiddler on the Roof.^[4] McDowall auditioned for The X Factor in 2010 and reached bootcamp.^[5] He auditioned in Liverpool for the fifth series of Britain's Got Talent, receiving positive comments from the judges. In the semi-finals he sang "Bring Me to Life" and received positive comments from the four judges. He reached the final where he performed "To Where You Are". Despite not being one of the favourites, he was crowned the winner of the competition and won the £100,000 prize and a spot at the Royal Variety Performance.^[6][7][8][9]

Ronan Parke[link]

Ronan Parke (born 8 August 1998^{[10] [11]}), aged 12 at time of the show, is a singer who came second in the series. He lives in the south Norfolk village of Poringland, near Norwich and attends Framingham Earl High School.^[12]

There was an allegation that Simon Cowell had been "grooming" Parke for two years before he auditioned on the show, but Cowell and Parke both denied having had any prior contact. Cowell said on the semi-final edition, aired Friday 3 June 2011: "There have been allegations made ... on the internet, that Ronan Parke has a previous recording contract with my record label, that I'd met him before, both of which are complete and utter lies. The first time I met Ronan was when he appeared on the show, he entered it of his own accord. He is 12 years old, this is a deliberate smear campaign and it is my job as somebody who works on this show to make sure whoever this liar is, is exposed, and Ronan is treated the same way as everyone else and it will be the public who decides." Cowell called in the police to assist him in locating the source of the leak, which was claimed to be from within Sony Music UK.^[13] Subsequently a 52-year-old blogger who was claimed to have mental health problems received a formal police caution and apologised to all concerned.^[14]

Parke wowed the judges and received a standing ovation from them and the audience in his audition, a rendition of "Feeling Good". He was put straight through to the Britain's Got Talent Semi-Final, in which he sang "Make You Feel My Love". He won the Semi-Final, and went on to the final, in which he sang "Because of You". Parke also performed at T4 on the Beach in Weston-Super-Mare on 10 July, singing a cover of Cee Lo Green's "Forget You"

New Bounce (ages 12–16) are a boy band made up of four boys,Mitchell, Kuan, MJ and James. When they were set off on a bad start when they had to be asked by Amanda Holden to sing a different song, no one really thought they were going to get far, especially when David Hasslehoff told them that one of them was flat. They blew the judges away in the semi-final by singing Price Tag and then in the finals sang Ain't No Sunshine. When the judges made their guesses on who they thought was going to win, although Amanda and Michael McIntyre chose Ronan Parke and David picked James Hobley, the final judge (and most famous for doing the show) Simon Cowell picked them over everyone else.

Razy Gogonea (4th)[link]

Razy Gogonea (born 3 June 1982)^[15] is a breakdancer from Romania. He moved to England to be closer to his girlfriend.^{[citation needed]} After his successful audition gained him three yeses, the judges were unsure if they were going to put him into the semi-finals. The judges re-auditioned him against fellow dancer Michael Moral and Gogonea won the dance-off. He performed again semi-final 5 on 3 June 2011. He was the outright winner of the semi-final, with 36% of the public vote.^{[citation needed]} He then performed again in the final, coming 4th place with 8.4% of the public vote.^{[citation needed]}

Michael Collings (5th)[link]

Michael Collings is a 19 year-old father of one from Plymouth. When he was younger, he sang in mini competitions with his sister, but gave up when he met friends that were into different types of music. When he was 16, Michael heard a song on the radio and said he wanted to sing and player guitar; he bought an old guitar from a friend for £30 and taught himself to play. He auditioned in order to make a better living for him, his Fiancee and their son, Jamie. At his audition, he sang Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" which was well received by the judges, the audience and the press and even caused the song to briefly reenter the UK charts. In the Semi-Final, he sang Paul Weller's "You Do Something to Me" and was again praised by the judges. He was voted into the top 3 and faced the judges choice, during this, Simon Cowell appeared to have extreme difficulty choosing between Michael and singing dog act, Pip and Puppy, commenting that he "genuinely wanted both in the final", eventually however, all four judges voted to send Michael to the final. In the final, Michael sang "Fast Car" again, this time with a backing track as well as his own guitar. He was once again praised by all for judges on his unique husky voice. Michael eventually finished in 5th place.

Paul Gbegbaje (6th)[link]

Paul Gbegbaje is a 19 year-old pianist. He stunned the judges by the fact that he had only been playing the piano for about 5 years.^{[citation needed]} He was chosen by the judges and he went through to the live shows. In semi-final 1, he performed a medley of songs. He was subsequently voted into the top three in his semi-final, where the judges were split between him and trialbiker Joe Oakley. The judges' vote was 2-2, so the earlier public vote was referred to. It was revealed that Gbegbaje had more votes. In the final, he performed his own song which he said "defined him as a person".^{[citation needed]} He finished in sixth place.^{[citation needed]}

Steven Hall (7th)[link]

Steven Hall is a comedy dancer from Kendal, Cumbria. He auditioned in Manchester. He does mash-ups of songs and dances to them and never fails to make the judges or the audience smile. The reason some think it went so well for him is because he looked so serious in his suit as he is a telecommunications engineer and yet entertained everyone greatly. In semi-final 4, He was chosen by the judges to go through to the final over Edward Reid, a comedy singer, with a 3-1 majority. However, if the public vote was referred to, Reid would have been in the final, as Reid had more votes than Hall. He was compared (especially by Amanda Holden) to similar act from 2009, Stavros Flatley. Amanda said he was just as good as they were and that he was one of her favourites.

James Hobley (8th)[link]

James Hobley (born 14 June 1999) is a dancer. He was born in a seaside town of Redcar in Teeside, England, he was one of the twins in the family who was diagnosed with Autism.^{[citation needed]} He studied freestyle disco and ballet and was offered a free scholarship.^{[citation needed]} Hobley started dancing career at 8 years old,^{[citation needed]} and entered many competitions and won many awards and trophies.^{[citation needed]} His success story was filmed as part of a TV documentary on BBC Three, titled Autism, Disco and Me.^{[citation needed]} In December 2009, Hobley auditioned for Sky 1's Got to Dance but his audition was not shown.^[16] In 2011, he applied to be on Britain's Got Talent and the producers accepted him through to the main audition stage. His audition was aired on 7 May 2011,^[17] and the judges were quoted to have said that he was "inspirational".^{[citation needed]} Ultimately, he was successful in the audition stage and entered the semi-finals, his performance in which was broadcast on 1 June 2011.^[18] He was sent through to the final by a 3-1 vote against bell ringers Gay and Alan on the judges choice.^[19] He appeared in the final on 4 June 2011^[20] and finished in eighth place with 3.5% of the public vote.^{[citation needed]}. James attends Sacred Heart School, Redcar.^[19]

Les Gibson (9th)[link]

Les Gibson, 41, is an impressionist who has been professionally impersonating people for 13 years. He began doing impressions aged 11 and used to work as a carpenter. In his audition, he did a routine from I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!, doing impressions of I'm a Celebrity and Britain's Got Talent hosts Ant & Dec, as well as Alan Sugar, Ross Kemp and Coronation Street character Kevin Webster. Gibson won the third semi-final with a routine of The Apprentice, again impersonating Ant & Dec, Alan Sugar, Ross Kemp and Kevin Webster, while also adding in impressions of Gordon Ramsay and Louis Walsh. In the final, Gibson did a routine from Celebrity MasterChef, with impressions of MasterChef presenter Gregg Wallace, Louis Walsh, Dermot O'Leary and Britain's Got Talent judges Simon Cowell, David Hasselhoff and Michael McIntyre. He came 9th with 2.8% of the public vote. Recently, a story was put out that Gibson's grandfather was the world-famous performer Leslie Hutchinson, who used to be the highest paid star in the United Kingdom.

Jean Martyn (10th)[link]

Jean Martyn (born 20 June 1951) is an organist who lives in Staffordshire. A graduate of Trinity College London and the Guildhall School of Music, Jean has had a long career as a pianist, theatre organist, Wurlitzer, and church organist. Jean has a vast repertoire, ranging from classical, jazz, and arrangements from musicals. Throughout the competition Jean was known for her £5 charity shop sparkly top and her flying legs as she really got into the songs she was playing. In the finals she even sang along to the song she played. She made an immediate impression with her big grin and her name on her organ.

Joshua 'Josh' Brookes born (1983-04-28) 28 April 1983 (age 29) in Sydney, New South Wales in Australia and is a professional motorcycle road racer. He has experience of Superbike and Supersport racing, both domestically and internationally.

Early career[link]

In 2004 he won the World Supersport round at Philip Island as a wild card,^[1] before a serious crash ruined his year. He returned to win Australia's Superbike and Supersport titles in 2005 on a Honda.

World Supersport and Superbike 2006–08[link]

He then moved to World Supersport with a Caracchi Ducati for 2006, but left the team mid-season despite a 6th place at his home round. Brookes was soon racing again however, joining Bertocchi Kawasaki in the Superbike World Championship, debuting on the bike at the Italian round at Mugello.^[2] He ran 4th in a wet race in Holland before falling, but generally struggled, as it was his first time living in Europe, mostly on circuits he did not know.

He did enough to be retained for 2007, with the team gaining new investors, a switch to Honda Fireblade bikes,^[3] and a new team-mate in fellow Australian Karl Muggeridge. Despite 9 points finishes in the first 7 two-race rounds, the team missed round 8 after a legal challenge from Sergio Bertocchi.

Brookes joined the Stiggy Motorsport Honda team in the Supersport World Championship for the final 5 rounds.^[4] He continued with them in 2008.^[5] Brookes scored his second win (and Stiggy's first) at Donington Park, moving up to second in the championship. He also made a one-off appearance in the British Supersport Championship for HM Plant Honda, qualifying on pole and finishing third].^[6]

British Superbike Championship 2009–[link]

For 2009, Brookes switches to British Superbikes with HM Plant Honda, alongside fellow Aussie Glen Richards,^[7] however he was forced to miss the opening round due to visa issues. Round 3 at Donington Park was also a disaster, as Brookes collided with Sylvain Guintoli on the sighting lap on the way to the grid, causing a broken leg for the Frenchman. Brookes claimed to have experienced a brake failure, if proven these allegations would have left Honda liable: for this reason they neglected to give their support. He received a one-race suspended ban as a result.^[8] In the next meeting at Thruxton he took seventh and third, with some fighting overtaking moves in race two especially. He followed this with a front row start and two third places at Snetterton.

Brookes was involved in further controversy at Mallory Park. While running fourth he lost control of the bike, resulting in a crash with the leader Simon Andrews. The Honda's engine case broke, spilling oil on the track and causing five other riders to crash. All riders involved in the accident were omitted from the result, even those who deliberately downed the bikes to avoid further carnage, due to red flag regulations.^[9][10] Brookes apologised in a TV interview later in the programme for his mistake.^[11] He had sustained a broken thumb from the crash. The BSB officials awarded him a 2-race ban following the incident, for "not riding in a manner compatible with general safety".^[12] He finished 3rd on his return at Croft, defending from one-off team-mate Ryuichi Kiyonari on the line.

Despite the bad blood felt towards Brookes, GSE Airwaves Yamaha boss Colin Wright told a Eurosport TV interview at Brands Hatch that he would like to sign Brookes for 2010, if he were to lose one or both 2009 riders. As it turned out, GSE Yamaha would not return in 2010.

For 2010 Brookes stayed with the HM Plant Honda team,^[13] Brookes has changed to bike #4 and is also joined by former double British Superbike Champion Ryuichi Kiyonari. He took his first win in the fourth race of the season.^[14] He also took a win at Cadwell Park^[15] and two wins at Snetterton.^[16] His season was closely documented in the film I, Superbiker.

He also made a British Superstock entry in the MotoGP support round at Silverstone, and a World Superbike appearance substituting for injured countryman Broc Parkes at Phillip Island. Brookes will also make a wildcard entry with team-mate Kiyonari at Silverstone.^[17]

For 2011 Brookes switched to the Relentless TAS Suzuki team joined by Alastair Seeley who is competing in British Supersport. He a poor start to the season with a massive crash at Oulton Park which wrecked his bike. By mid-season he started to get good results.
