Dodgy Development: A DFID Education
India is the biggest recipient of British aid. £2 billion will have been given by 2011 through the Department of International Development (DFID). This is the second in a series of short films about the DFID in India, shot by Eshwarappa M and Richard Whittell. In A DFID Education, we see how DFID funded programmes have contributed to the decline of public education in India. See www.corporatewatch.org.uk for an introduction to the series and links to the accompanying interviews and films. Voiceover by Joanna Christie Music by Tom Rogerson

Bill and Melinda Gates talk at DFID
Edited highlights of Bill and Melinda Gates' address to DFID staff as part of a wider trip to the UK to highlight the importance of aid. Speaking ahead of the foundation's Living Proof project launch with One International, the couple discussed their experience working on vaccines, malaria, education and reproductive health as well as the challenges of innovation, measurement of aid and the foundation's role in developing countries. On working with DFID and the UK to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, Bill Gates said: "We're all learning as we go. Closer collaboration as we see what works and what doesn't work will be important to us." "And the example that the UK is setting in maintaining the aid budget in a difficult time is one we're hoping other countries will respond in kind to," he said. "It's a bit of a challenge. The success stories are so far away that we have to get better about bringing the news about what is working. That's what we are kicking off this evening." Melinda Gates said: "I couldn't be more excited about the work that we do together. We're here today to really thank the UK citizens and the UK government for your incredible commitment." International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell and DFID Permanent Secretary Nemat Shafik paid tribute to the pair. "Bill and Melinda Gates have been an absolute inspiration to many of us," said Mr Mitchell. "Their commitment and their deep concern for this great cause in which all of us are involved is ...

Sri Lanka: how DFID support is helping save lives
Over 280000 people have been displaced following the recent conflict in Sri Lanka. The majority of these people are now living in large camps in and around the town of Vavuniya, in northern Sri Lanka. Humanitarian advisor Neil Barry recently visited some of the camps and reports for DFID on how funding provided by the UK is being used to help save lives. The UK government, through DFID (the Department for International Development), has allocated £12.5 million in humanitarian aid for Sri Lanka since September 2008, to help the International Red Cross, UN agencies and NGOs such as Oxfam and Medicin Sans Frontieres to provide emergency shelter, clean water and sanitation, and primary health care to those most in need.
