3D Printing in Ceramics
New AHRC film looks at how creative innovation can translate to new products.
Arts and humanities research generates innovative ideas with real-world applications and commercial potential. One example of research that is realising this potential and contributing to economic growth is an AHRC-funded Knowledge Exchange project at the University of the West of England.
In this film we see how researchers at the Centre for Fine Print Research, Led by Professor Stephen Hoskins and his team, have developed new methods of creating ceramics using 3D printing technology and worked with Denby Potteries to test designs and develop prototype models in ceramics.
Through this method, ceramics are built up layer by layer using a specially-created -- and now patented - ceramic powder. They are then fired and glazed in the usual way. 'Printing' ceramics in this way means that highly intricate and complex ceramics can be created that would have been impossible to achieve traditional methods. This has opened up commercial potential through quicker manufacturing processes and new design options. Gary Hawley, Senior Designer at Denby, praised the partnership between his company and researchers, saying that the new process is "pushing the boundaries of what is possible".
The film concludes with Professor Hoskins' inspirational view of what the future for 3D print technology might look like. This includes the announcement of an exciting new AHRC-funded project which will see the Professor Hoskins and his team to undertaking a major investigation into a self-glazing 3D printed ceramic, inspired by ancient Egyptian Faience ceramic techniques. The process they aim to develop would enable ceramic artists, designers and craftspeople to print 3D objects in a ceramic material which can be glazed and vitrified in one firing.
The team hopes to bring ancient tradition into the 21st century, joining together old and new hand-in-hand in a project that continues to push boundaries in this area of ceramic research.

I originally had a different song until 1/13/2012: This song is by M83 it's called: lower your eyelids to die with the sun. This song was marked as copyrighted by EMC so I added a new song using youtube's song library. Hope it fits well for you!

The future of materials: Advanced Ceramics
Google Tech Talks
March, 7 2008
ABSTRACT
The world has evolved a long way from the Stone Age to the Iron age, and
we are now in the new age of engineered materials. Today's discussion
will focus in the realm of advanced ceramics, materials that aren't
typically found in nature and can withstand extreme conditions. These
materials are being used to stop bullets, enable diesel engines to run
more efficiently, produce solar cells, and much more. We will focus on
Boron Carbide, Silicon Nitride, Silicon Carbide and a few other
materials, where you will learn about how they came to be, how they are
made, and where they are used.
Speaker: Peter Goldstein
Peter has been fascinated with the world around him and always wanted to
develop new materials since he was a child. He earned B.S and M.S.
degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of
Florida, focusing on ceramic materials. He is currently employed at
Ceradyne, Inc. a high growth, cutting edge Advanced Technical Ceramics
company as a Sales Engineer. He works on developing new applications
with his customers using the materials Ceradyne offers, and as a hobby
enjoys making glass sculptures at his home glass-blowing studio which he
built. There he gets to make new creations beyond the constraints of the
ordinary world by shaping glass with jet-engine like flames. He is also
newly married to a wonderful woman, Jessica, and they live happily
together in Huntington Beach, CA.

PETER SHIRE : CUPS
Film by Eric Minh Swenson. Music by James Lucchesi
Lora Schlesinger Gallery presents Peter Shire's Cups, 1974 - 2012 featuring a body of work focused on more than 30 years of ceramic cups, that have never before been exhibited. The show is the artist's first solo exhibition with the gallery. It opens Saturday, April 21 from 5 - 7 pm and is on view through June 9, 2012.
Peter Shire is recognized for being an innovative and unclassifiable artist. Since the 1970's Peter Shire has been at an intersection where craft, fine art, architectural and industrial design collide. He is not a "traditional" ceramist and his ceramics push the boundaries and preconceived notions of clay. For nearly four decades Peter Shire has made a collection of teapots, cups and other functional items typically found in domestic settings with atypical designs. The works have challenged ideas of form versus function, and have become sculptural objects occupying domestic settings.
Cups, 1974 - 2012 is a body of work focused on Shire's interpretation of a commonly used vessel, but are in no shape or form commonplace objects. A few of the works in the show have fragile thin walls that appear as if they could be easily chipped if touched by human lips. Their painterly surfaces and sculptural elements added or removed, give each cup an individual personality and sense of presence. Some of the larger cups have bases, handles and sculptural elements that look like assemblages or collages of ideas sculpted with clay. The cup Peach With Tamago Slice is an example of a cup that has been cleverly and colorfully compiled to create a playful construction whose changing surface and multiple textures propel the eye into multiple moments of discovery. Peter Shire's work continues to challenge conventional mass produced objects with a keen sense of design and personal touch. He has built his career freely combining architectural concepts, design principles, fine art and craft without letting solemnity overwhelm the seriousness of play.
Peter Shire lives and works in Echo Park, Los Angeles. He is a graduate from the famous Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. He has had over 100 solo exhibitions nationally. His work can be found in over 35 museums world wide, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum and The Israel Museum. He has completed over 25 public art works including the North Hollywood Gateway, The Ahmanson Music Center in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority on Wilshire and Vermont, and many more.

the natural speaker
‘transmission line speaker with porcelain which is making natural resonance sound’
the natural speaker is start from the desire to have unique speaker which is absolutely crafted and precious piece for interior. However, there is a lot of speaker which could make super bass and sharp high tones, we felt the sound is stuck inside of the speaker sometimes. During the development of the natural speaker, we realized the porcelain could gives you the natural reflection of the sounds. From the research, we found a special structure to give a clear real sound like as a concert right in front of you. The sound is amplifying inside of ceramic and wood transmission construction, and the sound is slightly echoing and making a natural feeling of resonance sound inside during the process. Conclusively, we make that the sound of the natural speaker is natural as right in front of you, and the mid tone of sound gives you a special feeling of ambiance.

INVADER- Binary Code Street Art- Part 1
One of our favorite street artists, Invader, came to LA from From: www.jetsetgraffiti.com
France recently and took a minute to explain his new Binary Code street art. This new media utilizes hi-tech Binary Code technology combined with his trademark lo-tech ceramic tile work as seen in urban centers all around the world. This style of artwork is among the most progressive and conceptually interesting in the world. Invader has definitely continued to take it to the next level with this latest development.
No doubt that if you pay attention to street art, you’ve heard of this artist. He’s been working in the streets of France for many years, and his work is among the most recognizable, if not completely understood. Now, with a simple IPhone Application called, I-Matrix, (now known as BeeTag) you can translate the hidden meanings behind his street-art.
Come back and visit us for Part 2 in a couple days…

Craftsmanship of Horezu ceramics

Description: Horezu ceramics are a unique traditional craft, handmade in Vâlcea County, Romania. The potters select and extract the earth, which is then cleaned, cut, watered, kneaded, trampled and mixed -- transforming it into a clay body from which they produce a red pottery. Each object is shaped with a special finger technique, decorated with traditional motifs in vivid shades, and then fired. The potters rely on traditional tools: mixers, potter's wheels, combs, tools for decoration and wood-burning stoves.
