Walking Around, Vídeo Projection, 2007
Exit?
Instead of the path that would lead me to discover the accuracy of the translation of Walking Around, I preferred to think and use, for myself, the words “walk around”. Maybe it was taken arbitrarily, by words, or heard that I changed, tossed souvenirs crossed with other things that occurred to me. Could even be another way, like “walking around” or “make the rounds.” The fact is that I do not know why I let myself go into a sort of drift of the words that came to me and its links with no concern for the translation. Without wondering whether the order entered in the English title has equal value and meaningfulness in Portuguese. But the drift is subject to surprises, and one was to have found a passage from a poem by Pablo Neruda, written in Castilian but it calls itself, also, Walking Around:
Sucede que me canso de mis pies y mis uñas
y mi pelo y mi sombra.
Sucede que me canso de ser hombre
The work of David Etxeberria, Walking Around, offer us a short ride in a closed circuit. In a city, an area inhabited by people who do not know ever. With door open houses where they are going on actions, meetings, or whatever. We know what is going on something, but we know only briefly. And that is all we know for definite.
Along the way, the author offers us, it produces a degree of ambiguity that emerges from the position we occupy as spectators. The view is very low along the ground. At street level, even in public places where we are led as if we were all a creeping animal.
The difference is the presence of a pair of shoes, which at first sight does not tell us anything. They are shoes that do not walk or run, but shoes that slide. Sometimes moving at great speed, but not run, because there is no body, foot, ankle, shoe or sock that these shoes. Another disruptive factor of an alleged narrative, and that makes it intriguing, and even briefly irritating, has to do with the type of shoes. These are a more appropriate model for the Swing dancing, or like another step aimed at golf courses (there are still endless chances for its use). David Etxeberria pushes us, or rather aspires us to a strange environment, almost absurd, surrounded by an envelope of sound that leads us in an atmosphere of a twilight zone. What he seeks is what remains of our memories by the similarity with fetishized elements that refer to some examples of the movie universe. The shoes work as a cliché that lends a picture, a presence of a false or fictional character. Men? A gangster or a dandy-sized upright? Other characters found in stories related to the position of difference apart from everyday life of common man. Although it may seem an obvious first approximation and recurrent in the images we consume, and sometimes we hold, these shoes are “one” who is on the sidelines, not participating, but pursuing this human need. As one who slips and illegal intruder enters, and makes a hustle out in clubs that only see floors, mosaics, legs and baseboards. Other shoes, many kinds of shoes, and thus a diversity of bodies that move. Within all these shoes are more people than not are unsung heroes who move and whisper.
In walking carried a sense of loss, loneliness or a pair of shoes without a body, to walk around. Walking Around the contrary desire simple and commonly human expectant of leaving, “a spin”, or find someone. Unwind, try going to the world of people and touch it.
There is, in this work, anything that is surprising. Like a suspicion? A question? A disappointment? Or a concern? meanings in the viewer’s mind.

John Cage’s composition 4’33” actively avoids making noise.
I would liken this act of choosing not to make noise (by not pressing a single key on the piano) to that of actively choosing to be silent (by not talking). Remaining silent or not discussing a pressing problem or issue requires a lot restraint and can be stressful and exhausting and often leads to further problems.
There are many different reasons why someone might keep quiet or silent. Perhaps they are hiding and don’t want to be heard, so they will try to make no noise whatsoever, or perhaps they are in a public place where silence is considered the norm, i.e., a library, church or classroom.
In each situation, there is an intentional restraint that simulates silence, which leaves a space for other noises to become more apparent or an opportunity for the silence to be broken, if one person chooses not to remain actively silent.
Silence can be peaceful in certain instances. When it is natural, easy and not forced. Forced silence can be very painful and uncomfortable, which is ironic, as people often choose to remain silent to avoid painful thoughts or to relieve uncomfortable feelings. However, usually this choice to remain silent (not discuss something sad, painful, embarrassing, scary or shameful) is masked by an intentional noise, usually conversation, which avoids addressing the underlying issue.
I would argue that this conversation represents a silence, usually solidified by a mutual feeling between 2 or more people who are all provisionally aware of something, but actively choose to avoid it. They remain silent about the issue while they simultaneously mask the silence with conversation or otherwise.
This type of silence is sometimes referred to as the elephant in the room, whereby everyone is aware of the elephant (the issue), but chooses not to acknowledge it to the others in the room.
This is also known as a conspiracy of silence. It has been said that it takes “two to dance the familiar conspiracy tango – one notto tell and one not to ask.” – I.F Stone
In “The Elephant in the Room: Silence and Denial in Everyday Life”, Eviatar Zerubavel defines conspiracy of silence as “a group of people [who] tacitly agree to outwardly ignore something of which they are all personally aware”. Conspiracy of silence is evidenced in the fourteenth-century Castilian story, “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, where an Emperor is conned by three men into believing the suit they have been commissioned to make for him is made of fabric invisible to those born of an illegitimate birth.
The Emperor, ashamed and embarrassed to admit he cannot see the suit, pretends he can see the suit. This leads to a spiral of silence, whereby everybody chooses to remain silent about the fact that the Emperor is in fact naked, so as to be in the majority, as it appears everyone around can see the suit. (When in fact everybody knows the Emperor is naked, but choose not to acknowledge this publically).
A spiral of silence exist when people are unwilling to voice their opinion of they think they are in the minority (for fear of being isolated), at the same time, people who feel they are in the majority are more likely to voice their opinion and so people who are in the minority voice the opinion of the majority rather than their own opinion (to fit in) and so the spiral of silence becomes greater, further marginalising the minority.
The silence is broken when a child highlights the fact that the Emperor is wearing no clothes. His father seconds the young child’s observation and so the silence is broken and everyone acknowledges the Emperor’s naked body. However, to save face, the Emperor chooses to ignore the public and continues to walk naked through the streets, with his servants continuing to carry the imaginary train, which trails behind him. This act can be compared to situations when a silence is broken, but a second silence emerges as the newly addressed issue is ignored and not spoken about.
A famous example of this is when filmmaker Michael Moore controversially addressed George Bush while accepting his Oscar in 2003. The audience were left feeling awkward on the televised show, with the MC continuing the show as if nothing happened.
In this project, I aim to highlight words that are sometimes intentionally kept silent, or are difficult to discuss with family or friends. I hope to encourage positive mental health through talking and breaking the silence, through creating a rich media platform for people to share their feelings openly and honestly.
The mood should
