Gowanus Canal OPFLEX Solutions Scott Smith Brooklyn NY May 2012
Oil contamination problems in Gowanus Canal Brooklyn NY. OPFLEX® Technology is a open-celled elastomeric foam that is highly oleophilic and hydrophobic, which simply means that OPFLEX repels water and absorbs and retains 32 times its weight in oil. OPFLEX® works quickly and efficiently, to absorb and remove oil from our waterways. OPFLEX can be a critical feedstock after absorbing oil in Mayor Bloomberg's and New York City's plans for Waste to Energy Power to help provide energy to the growing population of the New York City area.

Cleaning Up Brooklyn's Gowanus Canal
onearth.org The Gowanus Canal is one of the most repugnant places in New York City, a 1.8-mile waterway polluted by 150 years of industrial waste from gas plants, oil refineries, coal yards, paint factories, machine shops, and more. Now EPA has named it a Superfund site and is vowing to clean it up.

Preserving the Gowanus Canal Urban Industrial District
Linda Mariano is the voice of preservation in her neighborhood of Gowanus. Linda is the co-founder of a local non-profit which centers on community preservation and has been successful in earning many grants for preservation. The Elizabeth and Robert Jeffe Preservation Fund via the National Trust for Historic Preservation, The Preservation League of New York State, The New York State Council on the Arts and The Lily Auchincloss Foundation have provided funding through grants. With this funding, a survey of the Gowanus Corridor is being conducted for the nomination of the corridor to the National Register of Historic Places as an Urban Industrial District. Linda co-founded FROGG in 2004 and the organization serves as the community's voice in the midst of developers, the EPA and other large entities that have a stake in Gowanus. The FROGGs work to ensure that growth is appropriate and mediated and that the character of the neighborhood is not diminished. Linda was instrumental in "saving" at least one building in her neighborhood, and she keeps a close watch on her blocks. The Gowanus community is centered around the Gowanus Canal and is predominantly comprised of historic industrial architecture directly related to the canal. This area islocated between Park Slope and Carroll Gardens in Brooklyn, and is considered part of Brooklyn's industrial waterfront. The canal itself is 1.5 miles long, 100 feet wide, and stretches from Gowanus Bay in New York Harbor to Douglass Street ...

Hurricane Sandy causes power lines fire in Queens, NYC
Hurricane Sandy sent floodwater gushing into New York's five boroughs, submerging cars, tunnels and the subway system and plunging skyscrapers and neighborhoods into darkness. The storm shaped up to be among the worst in city history, rivaling the blizzards of 1888 and 1947. Two deaths were reported in Queens and more than 670000 were without power in the region as of 11:30 pm, according to Consolidated Edison Inc. (ED) The company cut electricity to some areas to save its equipment and a transformer exploded at a plant on 14th Street, blacking out others. New York University evacuated its Langone Medical Center when it went dark and backup systems failed. "We knew that this was going to be a very dangerous storm and the storm has met our expectations," said Mayor Michael Bloomberg at a news briefing. "The worst of the weather has come and the city certainly is feeling the impacts." After the storm's tide crested about 8 pm, the East River topped its seawall in the Financial District and flowed up Wall Street in a torrent that turned avenues into canals and intersections into lakes. Flooding took over Brooklyn's Red Hook neighborhood, submerging cars to the roof, while the Gowanus Canal overflowed and tree limbs plummeted. A downed power line sparked a fire in the beachfront Queens neighborhood of the Rockaways and the sea topped Coney Island's boardwalk. Record Waters A flood gauge at Battery Park, at the southernmost end of Manhattan, registered at 13.88 feet as of 9:24 ...

Gowanus Canal Podwalk 10/26/12
This is a quick video I made with footage I filmed from a college field trip. It was a "Podwalk" dedicated to New York City's Gowanus Canal and all the social, economical and environmental issues revolving around it. This "Podwalk" was led by Professor Kenneth Gould of Brooklyn College Sociology. If you haven't heard of him, he's written a book called Twenty Lessons in Environmental Sociology and it totally changed my life. Be sure to check it out! Song: J Boog- Waiting For The Rain

Gowanus Canal, high tide. Hurricane Sandy
Brooklyn's Gowanus Canal overflows it's bank during the storm surge of Hurricane Sandy. Mon 10/29/12 8:30pm. Like a nice swish of fresh seawater. Mixed with sewage and 100 year old toxic waste. Yum, get me a cup! ---- The canal is about 1/4 block from where I was standing. My guess is this puts the Storm Surge about 8 feet above sea level... and we're inland.
