The Ka-Ching Dynasty! - China
For downloads and more infromation visit: www.journeyman.tv The economic transformation of China has been electrifying. But with Europe teetering and the US plodding, can the biggest tiger of all keep on roaring? China's super-rich certainly think they can. Outside a private Beijing nightclub Porsches, Maseratis and Ferraris compete for space. Inside the club is packed with the children of China's super-rich enjoying a 'palace' themed party. China now has almost a million millionaires, six hundred billionaires, and the numbers keep growing at a staggering rate. As a reporter for the Hurun Report rich-list points out, they are a force to be reckoned with: "certainly we need to be aware of and understand this group." Even more striking is the bravado of China's super-rich, who feel that they can keep going from strength to strength. "I met an entrepreneur last week who said that if all goes to plan, in ten years time his business will be ten times the size it is now". The focus is certainly on quick growth. Current projections say that in ten years time half the world's billionaires will come from China. While there are warnings signs that the economic woes of Europe and the US will hit China, China's super-rich don't seem concerned. For some the hope is that the Chinese market will pick up the slack. For others, who have only known the good times, anything else is unthinkable: "if I have any spare money I buy sports cars." Richie Rich gets Richer - World
For downloads and more information visit: www.journeyman.tv As countries like Greece and Spain struggle under massive debts that are impoverishing its people, the elites around the world are getting richer and richer. This report looks at the ever widening gap. "There are customers that have all the way up to 100 vehicles in their garage." Torsten Muller-Otvos from Rolls Royce tells us. Each one costs about half a million and last year Rolls Royce sold more cars than ever before in their 100-year history, but then the luxury industry knows no crisis. Since 2009 the rich have become on average 6 percent richer. So while one in six Americans now has no health insurance, Manhattan's 58 billionaires have gotten richer. As Manuel Koch points out the ratio of return expected by the rich has totally shifted, "People used to be happy making three million profit. Today companies like Apple account for 6 billion profit. That's profit! Not turnover." But despite their greater income the super-rich aren't too happy about the idea of their tax loopholes being closed. In their minds they give back, even if its not through taxes. "I know a lot of rich friends who have charities...when they reach a certain level they give back to the community. So I think less tax is always better than too much." But as the world struggles through a financial crisis and the globe-trotting elite continue to grow wealthier, there's not much evidence they have their communities interests at heart. ORF

Attack of the Drones - USA
For downloads and more information visit: www.journeyman.tv They can move together in swarms, build towers, dance, throw and catch, assess targets and soon will even make their own decisions. Both in war and at home, drones are developing fast and gaining control. The screens at a US air force base lock onto a civilian car driving along a road in New Mexico. "We don't simulate or actually engage them, it is just training to follow a moving target." The question, "with their permission?" is met with an embarrassed pause and the faltering reply, "we're just following them with a camera". Rapidly becoming acceptable practice, increasingly police are also using drones to survey civilian areas for criminals. The US air force are now training more 'desk pilots' than traditional pilots, raising concerns that war is becoming "just a big computer game", allowing pilots to kill a few Taliban fighters and then go home for dinner. Nathan Wessler, a civil rights lawyer, strongly argues that the US using drones to kill targets in countries like Yemen despite not being in a state of war with them could lead to serious repercussions. "It is really a dangerous precedent. The technology of drones is not that complicated and there are dozens of nations developing it." And these robots are advancing. Future drones will be able to independently find targets and decide to attack. As Iran lays its hands on a US spy drone, which experts in this report argue they are "perfectly capable of copying ...

Maid Wars - Hong Kong
Hong Kong court overturns landmark ruling on maids To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com 300000 migrant workers keep Hong Kong's households moving. Now, amid claims they are treated as second class citizens, the city's maids are challenging laws that forbid them from getting permanent residency. Invisible for most of the week, this army of domestic workers emerges on to the streets on Sunday afternoons, to socialise and meet with friends. They are a familiar sight, but are currently at the centre of a heated legal battle. The Mission for Migrant Workers vocally campaigns on their behalf, against authorities not afraid of dubious tactics, like stirring up public bias by claiming hundreds of thousands of them might settle on the already crowded island. "I think there is a racial element to this", claims a lawyer involved in the campaign. Mistreatment of the maids also remains a serious issue. Yet the tsunami washed away old certainties and the industry has seen a growing ground-level resistance and concern about its safety. The Fukushima disaster is believed to have released as much radiation as 200 Hiroshima bombs. "There's been a lot of cover up over this". Guatemala - An American Genocide - September 1999
Beneath the lush green hills of Guatemala lie one hundred thousand corpses, the victims of a genocide funded by the US Government. Around a newly discovered mass grave crowd the weeping relatives of Guatemala's lost generation of Mayan Indians. 20 years ago these Mayan men, women and children were condemned as communist guerrillas and massacred. Until now these killings have been blamed on insurgents and vigilantes. But the army-issue bullets being extracted from these skulls by US forensic archaeologists tell a different story. The 400 newly discovered massacre sites are the handiwork of the Guatemalan Army, but they did not act alone -- the CIA told them how to do it. Fearful of Red-spread right on America's doorstep the Reagan administration armed and trained Guatemala's army to stamp-out the communist threat. Veterans of the Reagan administration make no apology for their political agenda. "It seemed clear to us that if you had a Nicaragua in Guatemala, what you've got is... a Soviet style government with secret police agents on the border of Mexico", explains Eliot Abrahms, the then Assistant Secretary of State. Anything was justified to contain the threat, including as is now revealed, turning a blind eye to genocide. Recently released CIA manuals issued to the army explain how to murder people, they even explain how to enter a room with ten people sitting round a table and murder them one by one. These instructions were used against not only guerrillas but ...

The Amazon Of Asia - Laos
October 2010 The Mekong River is already being put to serious economic use by the Chinese, and now the Lao people are determined to do the same. But can it really pull the nation out of poverty, and at what cost? Until recently the 'Amazon of Asia', was one of the world's last untouched rivers, but plans for a series of 55 dams in Laos look set to change that. With the majority of the population of Laos living below the poverty line, the government claims that hydropower is the quickest way to raise living standards, anticipating revenue of $80 million a year. Yet as scores of villages are uprooted to make way for the development, traditional subsistence communities are struggling. "We used to rely on nature for our living. Now if we don't buy, we can't eat", complains villager Cham Pha. The new dams also pose a threat to the ecosystem, endangering several species. Weighing up potential development and damage, the Lao people face a tough dilemma: "I'm worried about the environment but I want our village to have electricity". Thriving economy abandons cash for commodities To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com With the Western world rocked by economic turmoil, we explore an alternative financial system that's secure, stable and has stood the test of time. In Vanuatu, a different approach to money is thriving. According to the UN Vanuatu is one of the world's least developed countries, but no one goes hungry there. When they need money they simply make their own. "The only thing we need money for is to pay for salt, soap and kerosene." School fees and medical bills are paid in exchange with local produce, woven mats and pigs."Pigs tusks can hold their value against any other form of currency." On the island of Pentecost the bank accepts deposits of pig tusks and claims to have reserves of $1.4 million. As the world frets about the fragility of its financial system, "Vanuatu is ready to teach all the other countries the road to a good life." A Film By SBS Distributed By Journeyman Pictures May 2012

Lost Children of the Coal - China
www.journeyman.tv In China's Shanxi province the rate of children born with congenital defects is six times the national average. With many of these infants abandoned, a remarkable figure has embarked on a heartbreaking mission. Kong Zhenlan's 31 adopted children were all born with defects and abandoned by their poverty-stricken parents in an area devastated by coal pollution. "When I started claiming for these children's rights, the officials would insult me." The tiny but indomitable 'Mama Kong' stood up to the bullying for the sake of her constantly growing brood. "They tried to intimidate me to make me give up. They don't dare anymore." For over 20 years she has fought for identity cards, operations to fix their deformities and a place at school for each child. Mama Kong's work may be a drop in the ocean, but thanks to her this small group of youngsters now have the rare chance of a normal life. What's Up Productions

Rise of the Machines - USA
For downloads and more information visit: www.journeyman.tv Most people see drones as a controversial weapon prowling over foreign battlegrounds. But as America's military campaigns wind down, these machines are coming home and set to change civilian lives forever. "This is a powerful technology. No amount of hand-wringing is going to stop it", says drone expert, Peter Singer. Whether it's a floating TV station streaming live to the web, the prying lens of the paparazzi, the police chasing a criminal or a government agency spying, small domestic drones are experiencing an exponential growth. At the world's largest drone convention in Las Vegas a salesman tells the crowd, "this can be used in law enforcement, disaster relief and industrial applications. It's also very good at dusting floors. Every home owner should have one". And as the technology advances at a frightening speed, anyone with a few hundred dollars can buy one over the counter. These hobby drones can fly for miles and provide sharp video feedback to the pilot. "I wouldn't cheat on your wife!", laughs columnist Charles Krauthammer. But jokes aside, there are real fears over the "political, legal and ethical issues that play out with this", argues Singer. In 3 years time an order from the US congress will see tens of thousands of drones legally occupy an already crowded sky, raising numerous questions about basic safety, terrorism and civil liberty. As companies rush to cash in on this new billion dollar ...

Rising Up - Spain
For downloads and more information visit: As Spain announces more austerity, the country has erupted in violence. This report, which dives into the heart of the violent protests, reveals a shockingly deep divide between government and people. "The government is trying to scare the people," one protester says, following the government's dubbing of a protest outside the congress as a possible coup d'etat. It ramped up the already tense mood among a people that blame the right wing government for Spain's economic problems. As protesters refuse to leave and sit down in non-violent protest, the police break off into small groups and chase them down. "The police started to charge indiscriminately toward anyone. We are returning to fascist repression." Rubber bullets and bricks fly back and forth in street exchanges of a shocking intensity. "We are not animals! We are people!", one woman pleads with the police. But the police don't wait long before storming down the streets, shooting rubber bullets at close range into fleeing crowds. The streets may be clear for now, but as the crisis in Spain deepens with no end in sight, popular resistance towards the government and it's austerity project is only intensifying. Jihan Hafiz

Robot Wars - USA
Dispute rages over ethics of killer machines To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com It is estimated that the work of one in fifty US soldiers is now being done by a robot. As the use of technology in war grows, this report goes in search of the truth about the military's newest recruits. The iRobot Development Laboratory in Boston, Massachusetts, may look like a scene from a science fiction film but this "hall of cool stuff" serves a very real purpose. The US army are increasingly using robots to disarm roadside bombs and fly unmanned aircraft in the Middle East. Now they are even creating armed robotic soldiers that can withstand repeated attacks. But whilst the young generation of US soldiers "know it will save their lives", these developments raise some serious ethical questions about the ability of technology to make human judgements in delicate situations. Bamboo Railway - Cambodia
November 2006 Enterprising locals in Battambang, Cambodia, have developed a unique railway. It's made from recycled tank wheels, small motorcycle engines and lashings of bamboo. Cambodia's main train service only runs four times a month and derailments are common. Little wonder locals prefer a different option. 'Norries' are little more than bamboo slabs with wheels and run on the state-built track. With a top speed of 50 km per hour, the norry network is far superior to the train. As one driver explains; "People like these because they're fast and on time". Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

When it all went wrong the government promised the biggest financial stimulus packages in history and gargantuan bailouts. But what crazed logic is that: propping up debt with more debt?
