Creative Panel Beating
Creative Panel Beating
Panel Beating is a skilled and creative trade which sees art and cars merge into one. Wanting a more hands-on experience, Nathan Muir found his creative niche in the panel-beating trade, rather than art school. We chat to Nathan Muir at WorldSkills as he trains for the National Competition. Nathan is in the process of repairing a panel for a car. He shows us how he uses his hammer and dolly. The dolly is a tool used behind the panel so that when you hit it with a hammer you get the correct shape of the panel. He also demonstrates how to use a slapper -- this is like a hammer but with a wider face on it.

Full version of video here shop.tafesa.edu.au Identifying body and component parts (Panel Beating) This presentation gives a comprehensive listing of the major body parts and components of the types of vehicles on the road today. These 'parts' are identified in their relationship to the vehicle as a whole and where alternative names are appropriate they are also given. This video is intended for use with those relatively new to the automotive trade. To find out about courses offered by TAFE SA go to www.tafesa.edu.au or call 1800 882 661.

Full version of video here shop.tafesa.edu.au Corrosion repairs - small section replacement (guard) (Panel Beating) An instructional demonstration, at a beginners level, of the butt fusion welding of 1 mm and 0.8 mm sheet mild steel using oxyacetylene with and without filler rod. The demonstration covers flame adjustment, tacking methods, torch angles and sequencing. The demonstration concludes with examples and causes of several common faults that may occur during the learning process. These include a degree of penetration, build-up, craters, pin holes and undercutting. To find out about courses offered by TAFE SA go to www.tafesa.edu.au or call 1800 882 661.

The Butt Weld (Panel Beating)
Full version of video here shop.tafesa.edu.au The Butt Weld (Panel Beating) This presentation is the video component of a self-paced, competency based, learning package. This demonstration is one in a series dealing with the operation and maintenance of GMA welding machines as used in the automotive crash repair industry. As such, it specifically deals with the operation and adjustment of a typical machine used for the butt welding of 1 mm body steel. Specific attention is given to alternative methods of 'tacking,' 'push' and 'pull' welding, and determining a suitable amount of penetration for the method of repair. Full version of video here shop.tafesa.edu.au Run weld beads (Panel Beating) This presentation is the video component of a self-paced, competency based, learning package. This demonstration is one in a series dealing with the operation and maintenance of GMA welding machines as used in the automotive crash repair industry. In particular, it deals with "discovering" how the machine actually produces a desired result. Emphasis is placed on the "correct sound" made by the machine when it is producing a satisfactory result. We learn of the relationship between the voltage setting and the wire feed rate and penetration. We are also introduced to the concepts of "push" and "pull" operation of the handpiece. A step by step explanation of the theory and practice of edge relieving in thin sheet mild steel. Starting with an "oil-canning" piece of steel we are introduced to the concept of stretching the material, in the appropriate places, by hammering. Flattening out by means of a flat faced wooden mallet is then followed by planishing with a steel planishing hammer. With the aid of a simple jig and some spring welding clamps, the outside corner weld is probably the easiest oxyacetylene weld joint that a learner can attempt. The demonstration includes the initial setting up of the joint, tacking, starting the weld away from the edge (to eliminate edge burning for the learner) and how to finish the weld to an edge. The materials used are 1 mm mild steel and 1 mm filler wire. The demonstration weld is executed both with and without the use of filler wire.
