Rangrao Patil - Powada (Ballad) from Maharashtra at Baajaa Gaajaa 2010
This video features Rangrao Patil and ensemble singing powada, an oral poetic form that commemorates Maratha heroic valour. Alongside the practice of prose history writing (bakhar) in the eighteenth century, a poetic tradition of popular history called shahiri kavan existed. Powada ("heroism") and lavani (love song) are two related genres of this performing art tradition. Powadas narrate specific battle episodes from the life and times of Maratha war heroes. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, a king from the Bhonsle clan who established a Maratha State in 1674, is one of the most revered of these heros. In fact, one of the earliest powadas that we have today depicts his famous encounter with general Afzal Khan of Bijapur. It is called Afazal Khanacha Vadh (The Killing of Afzal Khan) and was composed in 1659 by Agnidas. Powada is very much a living tradition. In addition to singing songs from the traditional repertoire of poems published in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Rangrao Patil also sings newer compositions written by Yuvraj Patil (featured on stage as an ensemble member and in the interview next to Rangrao). In the modern context, the genre embodies current political and social issues with continuing themes of heroic valour. Like many other folk forms, it is also used by government agencies as vehicles for public service messages. For more information on the historical context of the genre and its wider implications, see Prachi Deshpande's book "Creative Pasts ...

KARLA CAVES LONAVALA MAHARASHTRA INDIA
Situated on the Pune-Mumbai Road, Karla Caves are approximately 40 km away from the city of Pune. These caves date back to the 2nd century BC and represent the golden period of Buddhism in India. The major attractions of the Karla Caves consist of the Chaitya Hall, beautifully chiseled sculptures and pillars adorned with incredible architecture. The magnificent structural design of the Chaitya Hall makes it a must see. Even the rooftop, made up of teakwood, has been exquisitely carved. One of the pillars of the Karla caves has four lions at the top. This design has been adopted as the national emblem of India. There are a number of rock-cut sculptures inside the caves, displaying animals as well as various forms of human life. There is also a stone stupa, placed under an umbrella and carved with figures of men, women and elephants. The 37 pillars chiseled with the figures of prosperous men and women on elephants, bowing before Lord Buddha, add to the attraction of Karla caves. The Karla cave complex comprises of a number of chaityas ie, prayer halls, which have been carved with great precision. Then, there are also a number of viharas, dwelling places for the monks, which have been similarly ornamented. All these chaityas and viharas date back to the time of the Hinayana Buddhists and have arched entrances and vaulted interiors. There are no images of Lord Buddha in the caves, only symbolical descriptions. The portico of Karla caves is carved in such a way so as to give ...

Nitish Kumar speaks in Marathi at Bhar Day in Maharashtra
Marathi is a sweet language, Marathis are such sweet people, so why do some of you trouble Biharis? This query was raised by Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar at a mammoth rally in Mumbai on Sunday, which was billed as a cultural event to celebrate 100 years of the formation of Bihar. But Kumar's message was clearly political, a reference to the MNS leader Raj Thackeray opposing the event andbacking down in the face of tremendous pressure.Wherever Biharis went and settled down, Kumar said, they made that land their own. He said the Bihari worked hard for his daily bread and did not chreat or tell lies to go ahead in life. After Nitish Kumar arrived on the stage, he first lit a lamp, and then garlanded a bust of Shivaji and portraits of Babasaheb Ambedkar and Mahatma Phule. The Maharashtra geet, Garja Maharashtra Maaza was sung followed by the well known playback singer Udit Narayan, who is Bihari origin, singing two songs and speaking in Maithili to the crowds' delight.

1985 Oct 26th Sahaja Culture USA
1985-1026: Sahaja Culture, New Jersey, Ashram, USA
Today I was thinking of talking, telling you about the Sahaja Culture.
Now we are formed in dharma, Vishwa Dharma. But it must have a culture. So far in all the religions there is no combination of religion and culture. No religion has. That's why everywhere you find different cultures. Say in India, people who follow Hindu religion have different cultures in different places. They are living in Lucknow, or say in U.P., they have a Muslim culture. More Islamic style. They'll eat in one plate, do all kinds of things which normally a South Indian won't do, and the South Indians have a different culture from Maharashtrians. So even in a religion like Hindu religion where culture is important, very important, we find varieties. So the cultures get influenced by the neighboring cultures or surrounding cultures, and that's how people get lost.
When you establish a religion like this, Vishwa Dharma, it's not like any other religion. It's the real religion within us, and this reality comes to us because now we are one with the Spirit. So when we talk of Sahaja Culture, it is the culture of the Spirit.
Now what is a culture? First of all let us see what is a culture is. So the culture is the pattern of behavior we have with others. Is a common pattern of behavior we are supposed to have with others. Like in English language, for example, we'll say "Thank you". Even if somebody murders, you may say, "Thank you". Or the person who murders you can say, "Sorry". On the phone one may say, just if they say something you can't hear, "Sorry?" Every time, "Sorry". As if "sorry" is a word so easily to be used. I mean if you are sorry, why are you sorry for that? "Sorry?" On the phone they used to first say, "I beg your pardon?", was sensible; but now I find everybody, A to Z, says, "Sorry?" I mean, it has no meaning, because what are you sorry about? Says "Sorry?" For everything they are sorry. Or we can say in English language, when we speak, "I'm afraid". You see, it's very common, "I'm afraid". What are you afraid of? The whole world is afraid of you.
So this is the culture, what we talk of, any culture as such, becomes artificial, is not spontaneous, doesn't come from reality. It has no meaning; sometimes it is pointless, absolutely pointless to stick to certain cultures. So the culture of the Spirit doesn't change. It's universal, and is higher than any other culture. Apart from that it integrates all the essences of all the cultures.
So it emanates from the spirit. Now, spirit has two sides. One side which you see, the another you don't see, like the moon. The side you see is outside with other people, other Sahaja Yogis, other people, other societies, which are not yourself, absolutely. The other side you don't see is the relationship with God Almighty, relationship with your Mother. If the other side is not all right, the behavioral side outside could become artificial, could become crooked and not Sahaj. So it's the other way round than any other culture. To know any other culture what do we go? We see how they talk, what is their language, how they speak, how they behave: all the outside things we get. We must know "thank you" if we want to know English language, must know "thank you", "please", all that. But if you want to know the Sahaja culture, you have to know your Mother, and you have to know God Almighty. And the relationship between your Mother and the God Almighty has to be absolutely perfect. Then there's no problem. But that, the relationship, if it is not all right, you cannot have artificial Sahaj culture. That is one thing for sure. Artificial Sahaj culture is not all right. I would say that India has, in its basics, the culture of the spirit, India has; because for traditions and traditions in India, and for ages, people have been seeking the truth. Spiritually they are endowed, because of the saints. They are blessed specially because they have been seekers, not of material things, but of the spirit. Specially in Maharashtra, we should say, because the Kundalini is there always like a magnet. People are attracted because Shri Ganesha being the magnet, attracted towards God and spirit. So they form a pattern, but there is lot of artificiality in that also has grown. We must admit that there is lot, lot of artificiality, falsehood, nonsense that has grown into it, because the religion fell into the hands of, spiritual religion fell into the hands of gross, horrible so-called Brahmins who were not realized souls. So the whole culture has become so nonsensical sometimes that you don't know where to look.
But to have the culture, first of all, culture is developed through meditation, by facing yourself. First of all you should face yourself, how you feel about your Mother and about God Almighty. First of all, how much liberty you take of your Mother? How much granted, take for granted your Mother? She's a Mahamaya. Even the first "M" is difficult t

'Chaupati' is beach in Marathi, the language spoken in Bombay (Maharashtra).
Bombay, now known as Mumbai is a bustling metropolis that serves as both the financial as well as the media hub of India. Surrounded by water on three sides, Bombay has a long running shoreline that gives a sense of peace and tranquility, easing the madness that is otherwise within the city. People of all ages and from all walks of life take to the water in their own way in this short vignette about the shoreline.

Top 25 Power Casting Directors in Film and TV
The following is a list of the top 25 Power Casting Directors in film and television.
Kerry Barden
Can you imagine Monster's Ball starring Erykah Badu, or American Psycho starring Leonardo DiCaprio? Kerry Barden can, because he saw them read the parts. "There are so many great actors that sometimes it's a disappointment there's not more than one role in a film," he says.
The Atlanta native discovered his calling while producing plays, then formed a casting company with Billy Hopkins and Suzanne Smith. For 15 years, they handled such Miramax movies as Good Will Hunting and Shakespeare in Love and worked with directors from John Waters to Michael Bay. Last year, Barden started a partnership with Paul Schnee and cast The Visitor, which earned Richard Jenkins an Oscar nomination. Barden's current slate includes Sweet Flame, Everybody's Fine, and Betty Anne Waters.
Victoria Burrows and Scot Boland
"I'm Disney, he's Tarantino," is how Victoria Burrows describes her odd pairing with Scot Boland. That pairing has worked magic for such repeat customers as Robert Zemeckis, Peter Jackson, and Albert Brooks. A three-decade veteran of the casting business, Burrows first worked with Boland on Zemeckis' Contact in 1996 and took him on as a full partner in 2000. Lately, they've specialized in motion-capture films, from 2004's The Polar Express to Steven Spielberg's upcoming The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn. Burrows likes the visceral change of pace from live action. "A lot of film acting is internal; it's in the eyes, face, and subtleties," she says. "In motion capture, you're looking for a full-body performance."
Ellen Chenoweth
Ellen Chenoweth was first bitten by the casting bug in the mid-1970s when she took an office job at the Actors Studio. "I was a young girl exploring possibilities in New York," she says. "Lee Strasberg, Elia Kazan, and Arthur Penn were all there. I was putting together casts for Studio projects and people started calling me from outside for recommendations."
Having since served as casting consigliere to Clint Eastwood, Barry Levinson, and the Coen brothers, Chenoweth remarks that her New York residence keeps her in touch with many stage actors. For Changeling, she auditioned several on tape and sent the footage to Eastwood.
In addition to casting, Chenoweth occasionally has a hand in selecting music for movies. "I have done it a few times, such as on Wag the Dog, and I love it."
Sarah Finn
A Yale-trained actor, Sarah Finn was mentored by stage director–turned–casting heavyweight Risa Bramon Garcia, with whom she worked at New York's Ensemble Studio Theatre, where actors learn everything from producing to running the light board.
"She said, 'You should really try casting. It's a great combination of acting, producing and directing, all rolled into one.' "
After cutting her teeth with Garcia on films like 1997's The Peacemaker, Finn partnered with Randi Hiller in 2000. The duo went on to cast a string of films from 2004's Crash to Iron Man (2008), the former winning a SAG Award for ensemble cast. Last year, she struck out on her own with Oliver Stone's W. and is currently working on Disney's Tron 2.0.
Randi Hiller
When Randi Hiller was casting Iron Man with then-partner Sarah Finn, Robert Downey Jr. sang "I Hope I Get It" from A Chorus Line during his audition. "Even when you've done this a long time, you can never forget that somebody is always excited about certain roles," she says. Hiller shares the same enthusiasm about casting. She and Finn -- who recently ended their eight-year partnership to form separate companies -- have worked on Crash as well as several Marvel movies and will collaborate on the upcoming Thor and Iron Man 2. "Actors stop by sometimes to tell us they got a job which has nothing to do with us, " Hiller says. "I love when somebody calls, because they know I'll be excited."
Kimberly Hope, Lynn Kressel, Suzanne Ryan, Jonathan Strauss
For New York actors, no casting quartet is more sought after than Law & Order gatekeepers Kimberly Hope, Lynn Kressel, Suzanne Ryan, and Jonathan Strauss. Ryan, who works on the original L&O; series, says the show "strikes a balance between reality and entertainment," which is precisely the talent they have to mine from Gotham's gritty acting pool. Occasionally, that includes theatre notables like Christian Hoff, brought on board by Criminal Intent casting director Hope. But more often, as Strauss attests, it means having the gut instinct to cast young unknown actors in difficult roles. For SVU, Strauss has cast a transgender teenager, a genius 14-year-old accused of murder, and a child savant with a form of autism. "These aren't your ordinary, Hollywood, Shirley Temple -- style characters," he says.

Actors dropping by Manhattan's Cafe Central in the 1980s could have easily gotten an audience with Sheila Jaffe. As hostess - night m
